YOU HAVE TO WATCH LA LA LAND (it comes out in Melbourne on Boxing Day) (I watched an advance screening) (best) (movie) (ever).
Legitimately though, I have been shamelessly plugging this movie to every person I know on every relational level. LIKE, YOU HAVE TO.

*inhales BOOIIIII u won't regret watching Jessica Jones, that's even better than the Dare Devil netflix series in my humble opinion

For any anime watchers I recommend;
- Gintama - a comedy classic (have to survive through the first 40 episodes though which aren't as funny as the rest of the show, quite a daunting task for the first-time anime watcher)
- Baccano/Durara - excellent story telling similar to a Quentin Tarantino movie with the non-linear story and both made by the same creator
- Samurai Champloo - another anime classic made by the same person who created Cowboy Bebop so music is on point

The next four are some of my favorite anime however they might not be to everyone's tastes. I recommend watching two episodes and dropping it afterwards if you don't like it.
- Mushishi
- Mononoke, The medicine seller
- Ergo Proxy
- Natsume Yuujincho
[edit]: Forgot to mention that these four anime all explore in some way the nature of what it means to be human and other such concepts. As such some of them (like Mononoke; The Medicine Seller) aren't afraid to mention issues which might alarm some people. Natsume Yuujincho is probably the most heart-felt out of all of them and the one I would recommend the most.

For movie recommendations, I really liked the Secret Life of Walter Mitty (i still remember having a heat-attack when my friend said it was boring XD) and if you have never seen The Shawshank Redemption, I highly recommend watching it. If you're feeling daring, watch, "The Shining" huehuehuehuehuehue.

This thread is a genius idea! Thanks for that insanipi (this is why you are a Lifestyle + Entertainment mod)

Favourite TV shows:
Walking Dead (!!!): Must watch show
Breaking Bad
Games of Thrones
How I met your mother
Modern Family
Revenge
Glee (unashamed to admit that I like it)

Movies (the following have connected to me in some way or form):
Fantastic Beasts (it's amazing, you definitely don't have to be a Harry Potter fan to enjoy it although I do love HP myself)
James Bond films (especially the ones by Daniel Craig- Casino Royale, Skyfall and Spectre)
Sherlock Holmes films
Harry Potter
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Slumdog Millionaire
500 Days of Summer (I absolutely can't stand romantic films but this one is great)
The Imitation Game
The Theory of Everything
The Royal Tenenbaums (made even more memorable because an English teacher who is as weird as the film showed it in class)
Inglorious Bastards
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (probably better to read the book first to understand the background as it's in Swedish so it's a bit difficult to follow without context)
12 Years a Slave
Inception
Black Swan
The Prestige
Despicable me (the minions!!!)
A Separation

EDIT: Added a few that I forgot about

EDIT 2: American Hustle is really great if you like black humour (as I do).

I cannot recommend The Prestige enough! It's about two very competitive magicians. I don't want to say too much, but it's fantastic. If you're a Nolan fan, it's by him.

If you don't mind a movie in French, Far From Men is great. It's set in Algeria, 1954, and is about a French teacher transporting an Algerian murderer to France for trial. It probably doesn't sound like much, but if you're into character-focused movies, this is it.

If you're into gangster movies, Eastern Promises is about a woman trying to find out a woman's past, which ties heavily into the Russian Mafia. It does have some sex and violence though. It isn't gratuitous, it does have a purpose in the story.

Yeah fucking FOR REAL - the Netflix Marvel shows are AMAZING.

Daredevil is the best IMO, and Jessica Jones/Luke Cage are also amazing. (Watch them in order - DD, then JJ, then LC).

Looooooooooved Dardevil. Such a well put together show.

Also, Brooklyn 99 is amazing "Filler" tv for when you cbf thinking about anything and want to watch something stupid. <3 Netflix 4eva

TV shows:
- Scrubs (You wanna be doctors will enjoy this heaps. Apparently the most medically/atmospherically accurate TV portraying a hospital, and life of a doctor)
- Silicon Valley
- Suits
- Breaking Bad
- Better Call Saul
- Community
- The Wire
- Archer
- The Office (There are two versions. US and UK. I have only watched the US one, and I really enjoyed it)
- Prison Break
- Dexter
- Luther

Anime, from what I've watched:
- Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou (Daily Lives of Highschool Boys)
- D-Frag!
- Death Note
- ReLIFE (Probably my favorite anime)
- Sword Art Online (I've watched the first series, and I enjoyed it. Not sure why people hate on it so much)
- Initial D (Its a racing anime, not everyone's cup of tea though)

Movies (It seems that I like crime movies):
- The Departed
- Goodfellas
- Drive
- Oceans trilogy

I'll add more when I remember them.

Please do the anime list! ;D

Games of Thrones

Thanks, appleandbee! I agree with the GoT <3 (but not for people who aren't into such intense scenes :P )

+Thanks to everyone else who's contributed so far! ;D
(Feel free to do so! :) )

Some of the older anime I have watched:
Ouran High School Host Club (the theme tune got stuck in my head .-. )
Kamichu (This is actually a really weird one- don't ask me how I stumbled upon it lol)

And who could forget the original Pokémon series? :P

Anyways, movies:
If you're looking for music-based ones:
School of Rock (although it is more comedic than musical-based, still takes my recommendation :P )
August Rush

Or superhero ones:
Guardians of the Galaxy is a must watch in my opinion and The Amazing Spiderman 1+2 8).
I do not recommend:
Batman vs Superman- which imo was so poorly made.
X-Men Apocalypse- also poorly made.

Everyone has posted really good suggestions so far! Here are a few of my own:

TV shows:
- Twin Peaks (it came out a while ago but it's really quite good)
- Arrow (even if you're not into superhero shows, I would still recommend this one)
- The Office (adding to what Orson mentioned earlier, I've only watched the UK one and it's brilliant - I think it's a safe bet to say that both versions are great :))
- Flight of the Conchords (funny in an endearingly awkward way)
- Bates Motel (a prequel to Psycho set in modern times, I enjoyed the first season especially)

Movies:
- Inglourious Basterds (appleandbee mentioned this earlier, one of my favourite movies of all time! everything from the soundtrack to the cinematography is amazing)
- The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (an old one but a classic! don't be put off by the length)
- Rear Window (really good story)
- Lord of the Rings trilogy (amazing. amazing. amazing)
- The Grand Budapest Hotel
- Shutter Island
- Alien

-Sherlock
I'm so pumped for season 4 omg
