Title: Taking notes for bio by laptop or exercise book?
Post by: paulthekiller123 on February 04, 2019, 05:15:29 pm
When it comes to taking notes in my bio 3/4 class, i'm not too sure whether if taking notes by laptop or exercise book is better. I feel like typing on a laptop is so much easier and more efficient than writing it out however I've been led to believe that 'scientifically', writing notes into your book allows you to retain content much more effectively than simply typing it up.

Has anyone tried both of these methods? And which one worked better for you?

Writing notes is probably better in the short term (i.e. memory) but their a certain benefits for typing. It will obviously be quicker so you can get some extra time for other things, you can make copies unlike a physical book could get lost.

However, I think it doesn't matter too much and the effectiveness of notes will come from you actively studying them and doing practice questions - in contrast to just writing the notes.

I personally found that taking notes by hand worked for me. Partly because of the memory thing, yes, but also because a pen and paper is much quieter than a laptop keyboard. And the pen didn't suddenly shut off to install an update like my laptop did on multiple occasions  :P

I think you should try them both for yourself, though. Like Sine said, actually using the notes is more important than how you write them, so just pick whichever you feel like.

I prefered writing notes by hand because I liked to draw the diagrams by hand, which I think is more helpful than copying and pasting pictures of the diagrams on a computer.

I actually preferred writing my notes on a laptop simply because it makes it much easier to add additional content and was much neater (I've got bad handwriting rip) and I would just print them out as the year progressed.

I also wrote notes by hand for the same reason, but try both and do what suits you best!

Honestly, whatever works best for you.
I think that being able to add info, however, is so important. So, if you choose to use an exercise book, I would NOT write on the backs of pages so that if I had to add something I could add it in that space. However, typing is faster. So, perhaps try handwriting your notes for the first topic and see if it helps you to retain the information. If it doesn't, you might as well type it.

Hope this helps :)

Definitely agree! For me (1/2 bio) taking notes in my workbook has been my way of revising content. During class (when the teacher is explaining concepts) I tend to take notes on my laptop, but when I am taking notes on Edrolo or the textbook I far prefer an exercise book.
