It used to be a bit of a tradition on AN to talk about your preferences and what order you want them in. I'm reviving that tradition for you, Class of 2018.
Those of you who are applying via VTAC this round:
1. What are your VTAC preferences?
2. What are you aiming/ hoping for (i.e. careers/ career paths)? Will you be going headfirst into the world of higher education or taking a break next year?

6. Outdoor Recreation Education @ La trobe (Bendigo)
I intend to study in Canberra though, I just applied through VTAC in case something happened that prevented me from moving interstate
Career wise, aiming for something to do with marine bio but I'll probably change my mind a million times before we get there.
Potentially not going to be eligible for some of those courses if I end up getting a score in English below 25, but we'll see.

1. Pharmacy (Scholars Program) at Monash
2. Pharmacy at Monash
3. Physiotherapy at Monash
4. Laws/Science at Monash
5. Science/Arts at Monash
6. Science/Physiotherapy at Melbourne
7. Science at Melbourne
8. Public Health at Monash
(I felt the need to fill all my preferences up - if you're wondering!)

The risk you take not doing this is if you don't get an offer for anything, you're in a bit of trouble and will have to rely on second+ round (fyi, most offers are done in round 1) so the likelihood of getting something (especially if the course is competitive) is slim.
This is all based on spots available vs. your order/ranking in the uni selection process. Obviously you all know your ATAR now so you have a good idea as to whether you'll get in or not.. but there are only a limited number of places per course (especially if the course you are applying for is CSP), so it is super important to have backups and not be cocky and rely on the fact you are destined to get into a certain course.
Another reminder that you'll only be shown the top preference for which you've received an offer for. So you might get offers for all your preferences in the first round (each application is treated individually) but only the top one will be shown/actually given to you (per round).
I remember when I did my preferences, I filled mine up with courses at unis I had no desire to attend, but the reality is that you can't just rely on previous year clearly-ins and be satisfied that putting 2-3 preferences will be enough. Do all of them, give yourself a big safety net. You can always transfer out after a semester/year (subject to the other uni's entry periods). Unless you have been offered a scholarship or an early offer in writing, nothing is guaranteed.

I'm feeling pretty confident about getting my first choice, but if not I do have a couple of backups. Pharmaceutical science was a really late addition, and with a little bit of extra time it might have ended up as my top preference, but I hadn't thought enough about it. Basically the BEng will give me an extra year in which to make a final decision about the engineering stream (or a possible change of course) that I'll follow, which is a big positive for me. Pretty happy about where I am at the moment.

Hey! Random question (if you don't mind me asking); are you aiming to work as a pharmacist after uni? Or is there another pathway you're looking towards? We have a few similar preferences and I was just curious :)
