Clarke's experience with Arts

Hello fellow AN enthusiasts. I'm Clarke, and I'll be embarking on a Bachelor of Arts adventure at UoM in 2018  8)

Why Arts?

Put simply, I'm an extremely indecisive person, whose interests seem to fluctuate more than Melbourne's weather. Well, maybe that is an over exaggeration. But in all seriousness, I have a strong passion for all things language, legal and philosophical. So it's my quest to reconcile these loves. Find my right direction. I'm confident that Arts, with all its diverse goodness, will cultivate this pursuit.

And Melbourne? Why UoM?

Melbourne gives me a 'homely' type of feeling that I can't properly articulate. There's an inspiration attached to it that motivates me to achieve. Usually I don't allow instinct to determine my decision making, but no amount of logic or reason could dissuade me from choosing Melbourne as my study destination. I mean, who can honestly reject that divinely beautiful Arts West building?

What about after Arts?

At this stage, the JD is looking quite promising as a prospective Master. As an eager student (who desperately needs routine and study back in her life) I've started reading my Principles of Business Law textbook. It is deeply fascinating and reminds me why I loved Legal Studies so much when I completed it in Year 11. But who knows. In a few weeks time when I make my next entry, things might have changed....again.

I am looking forward to reading this journal as I am beginning a BA at Melbourne this year too!

Which arts foundation subject have you selected? I am doing 'Representation' which is in semester two.

It's fantastic to see another Arts student on AN :D I'd love to hear about your experience with the course as the year progresses! How are you feeling about starting?

Ah, Representation sounds extremely fascinating. What's on your agenda for semester 1?
I've chosen Language for my foundation subject. Here's hoping that its content lives up to its enthralling subject description  ;D Given the limited reviews on Art foundation subjects, I don't know what to expect!

yay another arts student!

excited to read your entries and hopefully you enjoy uni :)

won't derail the thread
Why not just do a bachelor of laws then?

I have never understood the Melbourne model and why students would go to Melbourne if they're interested in law.

I long for the days Melbourne offered a Bachelor of Laws and they were known for their double degrees.
can't speak for OP but there may be several reasons:
1. Melbourne is a great university (including their arts faculty)
2. Melbourne also has an excellent JD program
3. The Melbourne Model also gives students a variety of options to study breadths etc
4. People may not be 100% sure they want to commit to law yet

I am very excited to start! For first semester I am studying 'Literature & Performance', 'Media & Society', 'Creative Writing' and 'Introduction to Screenwriting' as my breadth.

Hmm I don't know what to expect either with the Arts foundation subjects and I wish 'Representation' was in semester one so I could meet more people who are doing different subjects to me but I guess I will have to wait until semester two.

Thanks Coffee! Hopefully you’re still having a blast with your Arts course :)

In semester 1, I plan on taking ‘Principles of Business Law,’ ‘Language,’ and ‘Intercultural Communication.’

In semester 2, I’ll most likely complete ‘Anthropology: Studying Human Diversity,’ ‘The Secret Life of Language,’ and ‘Free Speech and Media Law.’

Excuse me but I think the -9 downvotes is extremely rude when I was merely asking a simple question.

The original post is split up into 3 main points and asking a question  which covers the last point which is solely dedicated to what OP wants to do next is not ' derailing the thread'

I just asked a question, honestly anyway I'm not going to say anything else as I'll be in trouble. So this will be my last visit to the arts forums where I've been downvoted to hell in one post than I ever anywhere else total!

I totally get what you mean here! I ended up choosing Monash, but Melbourne has this feel about it. I think the architecture was a big factor, but honestly, I also loved seeing buildings still labelled as 'natural philosophy'

I recognise your Arts West building, and raise you an entrance to a car park.

Looking forward to reading more!

As someone who loves Melbourne uni and my entire family went to Melbourne it was a very big decision to be the first to go to Monash instead.

However it was an easy decision and one I would make again 100x over.

So for me I decided to focus on a different part of the post as it's the most relevant to me.

You all do Arts so you focused o maths Arts part doesn't mean what I said wasn't relevant.

I'm not here to defend myself like I've done anything wrong and by desire to go back to this part of the forum is null.

All I'm going to say is if someone has an interest in Arts and Law they can do a double degree right of the back at Monash, the employment opportunities are the same in Vic between the two unis.

If one has decided they don't want to to do Law they can drop the law part and just do Arts.

JD isn't even a guranteed you'll get in and need to sit the expensive LSAT do an expensive post grad degree for 4 years without a guranteed commonwealth supported spot.

To ignore a double degree which saves time and money I don't understand so I asked a question on why it's a good idea and for downvoted to hell.

And  it's essentially confirmed that the Melbourne model was financially motivated spurred by govnerment legislation changes. Not an improvement for student education.

People don't like that opinion on here that's fine  this will get downvoted too and that's fine I've said everything I've wanted to say, if I disagree with people though I don't downvote them because I acknowledge and respect a different point of view.
