Title: Subject Review Requests
Post by: charmanderp on November 19, 2013, 01:52:08 pm
Thought this thread might a good idea. The existing subject review thread is amazing but sometimes subjects you plan to do (like obscure arts ones cough cough) haven't been reviewed yet.

So I thought maybe here users could just ask if anyone has done a subject before and get either a short review ('Do it because...' or 'Don't do it because...' or 'Do it if....') or a full length review that could then go in the other thread.

University of Melbourne - Subject Reviews & Ratings

If you do post a review in the other thread according to a request here, make sure you come back to this thread with the link! (:

Just to kickstart, has anyone done 'SOCI10001 - Understanding Society'? Considering doing it sem 1 next year, would love some first hand info.

Sure, I'll do that one sometime this week. I did it last year. I can't recommend it highly enough! Super easy subject with absolutely no work. A pretty easy H1 if you ask me!

Oh ya, those fall in the same group w/ the Music Psychology/Health ones and Forests in a Global Context.

It'd be nice to get second opinions on PHYS30001 and PHYS30008. Both (only) reviews were written by the same person, and the subjects themselves can't be that bad, otherwise the coordinators would have changed them for the better.

Excellent idea.
Has anyone taken the following?

Were they demanding? Well-taught? Is 'Companion Animal Biology' as adorable as it sounds? Is the 2000 word assignment to pet kitties?! Would the knowledge gained from any be useful long-term, for example in third year physiology?

Please and thank you!

I know there's a few people who are pretty curious for what some of the subjects are like in the MD.

Could somebody review the third-year Biomed cores? I know that there's some already (from 2011) but I'm just wondering if much of the subject has changed

Thank you!! Could you expand upon what you heard of DASC subjects? Who/why/which/etc?

I'm trying to find a balance between not overwhelming myself with difficult subjects so as to achieve a GPA that allows me into postgrad, and taking such easy subjects that I'm a useless researcher when I actually do postgrad...would taking 2 breadths in second year and 2 breadths in third year, in addition to either a DASC/PHIL subject in second year, be much of a disadvantage in terms of prior knowledge for third year? I'm taking all the prerequisites and at least one recommended class for all my third year subjects, I'm just wondering if it's best to have as many classes with overlapping and relevant content as possible.

Thank you!

I haven't heard much about Companion Animal Biology other than that it's objectively "bad" (the assessment looks very nice, though), but I do have it on good authority that Applied Animal Physiology is hands-down the worst subject in the world and that you shouldn't even think of touching it if you want to live (from 5 people or so, and friends with 2nd year friends have apparently heard the same thing). As for other non-Animals in Society DASC subjects, I've heard little, so I don't think I'm qualified to say anything about them. But if you want to do an animal physiology subject Comparative Animal Physiology is apparently a recommended subject for physiology majors (or at least a prereq option, so it must be useful). Otherwise I guess you could just stick to humans?

Lectures are definitely useful, ideally you should attend the lectures in person since there's no screen capture or proper recordings online (it's just a crappy mp3 download). Videos are always shown in the lectures, and sometimes there are questions about these videos in your tute prep or tutes themselves. Lecturers will also tell you what will and won't be on the exam. I've posted up a review of OB in the subject reviews thread if you want to have a look.

Title: Re: Subject Review Requests
Post by: b^3 on November 24, 2013, 08:10:03 pm
The review page hadn't been updated since around midyears, so I've gone and added the links to it. But I've probably put a few in breadth that didn't need to be there and vice-versa (since I don't know how your breadth works exactly), and probably mixed up a few of the biomed/sci units. Also as I've finished it I've just realised that it's formatted slightly different to our Monash thread, so some of the links are out of order, but they're there. I'll try and fix the order of the links up now.

...and different parts of the post have different formatting. This is such a mess..... Going to split things by years and then subject codes.

EDIT: I think I've finally got it right, not sure about a few of the units in "other" though, and still don't like the way you guys originally had the majority of it formatted...

What would be better is if everyone who wants to have a review done, does a review themselves. Makes this a little less "do mine!". I'll be doing:
COMP20003
ELEN30011

MCEN30018
ECON10003

Evolution and the human condition

The AN community can expect me to write subject reviews for principles of neuroscience, neurophysiology, deafness and communication, reproductive physiology, visual neuroscience and (potentially) sensations, movement & complex functions. litaluta, I strongly advise AGAINST choosing evolution as it is known to be a GPA destroyer (I heard that the average subject score was in the 50s).
Title: Re: Subject Review Requests

Would also advise strongly against taking Evolution, it looks easy but apparently the exam marking was absolutely ridiculous. My friend got >90 in his other classes and put equal effort in to it, and got a 54. I know someone else who took it and suffered the same fate, and there are some people on AN who seem to have had the same problem with the class :/

Would also love subject reviews for:
Developmental Biology
Reproductive Physiology
Ecology in Changing Environments
Fire in the Australian Landscape

Thanks so much to anyone who's planning to write them <3 All my other subjects for next year have reviews already and I don't believe I'm changing them :)

I'm planning on reviewing every subject that I took this year (including S1), i.e. Animal Structure and Function, Australian Wildlife Biology, Biochem, Fundamentals of Cell Biology, German 3, German 4, The Secret Life of Language, Comparative Animal Physiology, Plant Biodiversity and Ecology (and Marine Botany, which starts in two weeks).

I've read your reviews - but didn't know if you were still around! :)

With Phonetics, were they pretty clear as to what they expected from you? And was the workload reasonable, in terms of hours?

Yeah, they were clear. I knew what was expected for the assignments, what would be tested on the oral and written paper, etc. I think a fair amount of work was required, mainly in terms of keeping up with the sounds and IPA symbols learnt, so you wouldn't be completely lost during the tutorials. It's not too bad if you have a reasonable ear for sound, and everyone learns to pronounce even the weirdest of sounds eventually.

I have the lecture notes for both subjects, if you want them! Just drop me a PM. :)

Edit: As you've taken SLL, I think you'll cope just fine on both subjects! :)

Along with PHRM20001, UNIB30004 is my fallback subject for semester 2 next year if nothing else in BIOM20001 takes my fancy and makes me decide to pursue that area further in a selective (I already intend to take MIIM20002). I've only heard offhand comments and they have been very mixed - some people have urged me to do it while others have told me to steer clear. A subject review on it would be great, if anyone has indeed done the subject themselves.

HPSC10002 Science and Pseudoscience
Reviews on this subject would be appreciated, thanks!  :)

I did it in first year (so three years ago now.) For this reason, I won't write a subject review of it. Chances are, a lot has changed.

Anyway, on the whole, I thought the subject was average. The content was interesting enough, the assessment was very manageable (especially considering you could do the essay in the mid-semester break, you had a choice on when it was due.) The topics were interesting enough. After an introductory week, you basically take a series of topics (evolutionary biology, intelligent design, astrology, forensic science, climate science, etc,) and try to decide if it's 'science' or 'pseudoscience.' Some will be clear, some will be less then clear. There's assigned readings and all that jazz that usually comes with arts subjects.

This subject definitely focuses on the 'philosophy' of science.

Not a terrible subject by any stretch of the imagination, but not really fantastic either. I've heard the second semester subject (From Plato to Einstein) focuses more on the 'history' of science, if that's your thing.

Hi all,

I am trying to decide which Animal subject to study for 2nd year science at Melbourne Uni. I am already doing foundations of animal health 1 and think that comparative animal nutrition and digestion (DASC20012) is pretty similar to the vet subject, content wise. It sounds really interesting, but so does companion animal biology (DASC20011) which covers things a little different from my vet subject. I was wondering if anyone knew what either of these subjects were like and which one they would recommend?

Thankyou!

I've done BCMB20002 so I meet the prerequisites but was wondering how difficult/demanding this subject is particularly if you don't have much previous exposure to developmental biology. (i'm a microbiology major but have covered a bit of developmental stuff in 2nd year anatomy). Any other info about the subject would be greatly appreciated! :)

Thanks guys!

Ahh I see, thanks. I hear really good things about comp and strat from a lot of people, I hope it remains a cool elective this year. I think it might be changed because there is a new lecturer for this year? Not too sure. Also turns out the Inter Macro lecturer from previous years isn't lecturing anymore. :( So I hope the subject is taught well (given you said the content is challenging, haha)

Unlucky! Chris Edmond was great. It's probably not super hard to get a H1 in it, but to get a deep understanding there were some subtle points that are pretty easy to miss, and I felt like there was a lot of content in it. You never know, a new lecturer could (and probably will) make it easier, for better or worse.

In the latest BLAW10001 Principles of Business Law review (sem 2 2013) it said that the course was changing a bit in 2014.

Can anyone who did the subject in 2014/2015 do a quick review?
Loved it, great break from my other subjects. Covered lawmaking bodies (parliament and courts), contract formation and terms, contract performances and breaches, remedies for contract breaches, vitiating factors that invalidate a contract, Australian Consumer Law, tort law (focus on tort of negligence), agency law.

If Tanya is lecturing for Semester 2, she's great. I really enjoyed her lecturing style. Assessment isn't too difficult either 2 MCQ tests during semester worth 10% each (/40 marks)  and MCQ exam worth 80% (/60 marks)

I'd just like to add how the practice tests/exam can be quite simple compared to the real thing. It's not a really good indication of the type of questions asked in the real tests/exams. Imo I see it as testing your knowledge with basic questions that you can grab off of lecture slides but the real tests/exam require focuses heavily more on the examinable case studies.

First para of my SR of Reason goes into some general details.

(I've only done the one, but knew people in almost all the others so word got around.)
If I had my time over I probably would've done Language instead, but pick one that vaguely suits something you want to major in if you get a chance. They're all pretty generic and dull from the sounds of things :P ESPECIALLY THE GODDAMN WORKSHOPS

Let me know if you have any questions :)

Haha, tbh the content in some of the Foundation Subjects is kind of interesting, but they're not too well run and the idea that it's a helpful introduction to the skills needed in Arts subjects is total nonsense :P

Re: Diploma of Languages; not something I've had any experience in - though I have done a few Language electives which've been really good. In general it just means you have to overload in a couple of semesters, or extend your degree by half a year (I think?) but if you're keen on learning a new one or adding to your current proficiency then definitely look into it online or on open days.
Maybe read through any current subject reviews for the language you're interested in (if there are any) or just let us know which one(s) you're thinking of doing and someone else might be able to jump in with some feedback :)

I didn't do it, but based on my experience with level 1 languages and what people who've done French 1 have told me, it's fairly easily manageable. Personally, I was pleasantly surprised by how little work there was to do for Spanish 1 compared to my other science-based subjects.

yep can confirm level 1 chinese was one of the slowest paced subjects i have ever done without much to learn, very clear, fair and i dare say easy assessments and fun classes with a good atmosphere

EDIT: also, from what i've heard from most of my friends, the 5th language subject (eg; chinese 5, spanish 5, french 5(especially french)) is generally where things get difficult/annoying/less enjoyable. i dont think i know a single person whose done  "insertlanguagehere 6"

A friend of mine took French 1 this year, and I helped with the h/w. It's not too hard I don't think. I think you'll find the subject easier if you engage regularly with the language. Learn the vocab, the conjugations, the grammar, etc. Trying to cram that stuff won't be easy, nor will it be pleasant. The group project from memory wasn't too hard (I helped correct it), but you'd need to learn your lines for the presentation. That's all I can say considering I didn't actually take the subject!

Can confirm, Spanish 5 was a lot trickier. Although, it was still a lot of fine. French 5 has a terrible reputation; one it seems to have earned. Know plenty of people who've done it and all say it's dreadful.

Of course though, what you should really be thinking of is Spanish 1 rather than French 1

I have a few friends who did German 5 and they said it sucked as well, so clearly there's something up with the level 5 language subjects haha.

Has anyone done Indonesian 1? If so it'd be great if someone could do a review of it. I need to find a breadth subject for next semester and I really like languages, so I'm kiiiinda leaning towards it. I would have loved to do French and Spanish (or Greek if they offered it), but Arts kids can only do Asian languages as breath so I'm leaning towards Indo instead.

seriously consider chinese 1. it is very very easy (if you do the work, of which there is little) and it is arguably one of the most useful languages to learn + people will look at your transcript and say "wow such a good score in chinese? isnt it a really hard langauge? this lad must be smart"
classes are also great fun, everyone is friendly, teachers are awesome, basically its the best case scenario imaginable for a university subject LOL

Haha just going to jump in and say that Italian 5 is also known for not being a terribly great subject either (and it's rather difficult). XD Italian 1-4 shouldn't be a problem though, and the workload was lighter than all my Biomedicine/Science subjects.

Confession: I learnt French from Years 7-11.  ;)
However, I really don't remember much. Thanks so much guys! I think I shall do it :)

I'd be surprised if they let you do French 1 then. They're pretty strict nowadays on entry because plenty of people had, previously, been taking language subjects to bump up their GPA.

^

With Year 11 knowledge your entry point will most likely be French 3. They'll make you sit an online placement test just to be sure, but if they found out you did French in Year 11 (remember, VCE Units 1 & 2 subjects do show up on the transcript) you'd have to make a pretty good case to be allowed into the French 1 class. If you're lucky, they might ask you to wait a semester and enter in at French 2, but I strongly doubt you'd get permission to join French 1.

Can confirm that year 11 knowledge will place the student into French 3 under normal circumstances.

Well the scenario in question was the exact same one I was in at the start of first year having done Year 11 Italian, and I was allocated into the Italian 3 class.

This is annoying because I barely learnt anything from years 7-10 (bad school). I don't feel that I ever actually learnt the fundamentals, which is why I didn't take it in year 12. Oh well  :( Thanks for the heads up, guys  :)

(I tried taking a placement test but the program crashed so I exited it and now I can't redo the test...??)

Honestly, don't let it worry you. I found that I learnt very little new content grammar-wise in Italian 3 - most of it was content covered in Years 10-11 of high school Italian. Rather, the focus was on becoming more confident with the aspects of the language that was learnt in Italian 1 and 2 (so we did a lot more speaking and listening to each other in Italian - for the first time everything we did was in the Italian medium). I mainly started learning new grammar points in Italian 4, and there was a noticeable shift away from "growing comfortable and using the language" so to speak. Obviously, I'm not sure I can say the same for the French subjects, but I'd presume there would be some similarity.

If it's particularly concerning you, having a talk to the French staff about where your skills are at and where you should be placed might be worth it. To me, the chances of you potentially being asked to enter in at French 2 seem viable, but I'm still doubtful they'd let you in at French 1.

Yeah I was considering Chinese as well but the idea of learning all the characters/tones seems really daunting haha. If you're saying it's not that bad though then I might start leaning towards it... Hm maybe I should write up a pros and cons list lol

should've clarified that the characters are pretty bad :P but you get used to it and the rest of the language is pretty simple and pretty cool. tones aren't too bad either, especially in the first year of chinese they take it very easy on you with the tones. all in all indonesian or something would probably be easier, but alot of the kids that do jap + chinese say that chinese is easier than jap so im thinking the difficulty scale is something like indo<chinese<<<japanese

Has anyone done or know someone who has done LING20011 Grammar of English? I really wanted to study a linguistics subject at university and I was intending to do LING10001 The Secret Life of Language until EURO10002 Eurovisions became a thing (both are in semester 2, so I can only pick one). XD This one's available in semester 1, is a level 2 breadth and doesn't seem to require any prior linguistics knowledge. Is it one of those problem-based subjects? How demanding is the workload? Is it any good? Anything else I should know? Thanks.

If that doesn't work out, I'll probably do FOOD20003 Food Chemistry, Biology and Nutrition.

Yarp. Did it Semester 1 this year and would absolutely recommend it. I'll hopefully post a full review sometime next week - I was holding off till the end of this Semester since I did Syntax and wanted to assess them after doing both.

Pre-emptive spoiler: it's an awesome subject that was run by Lesley Stirling when I did it (an utterly wonderful lady and amazing lecturer) but will most likely be taken by Peter Hurst next year (who was the lecturer for Syntax and was magniflorious) so you've pretty much got the best in the department. Not having done any linguistics at all isn't much of a disadvantage since the first few weeks go through all the basics, but it ramps up a tiny bit when you start getting into fluid sentence structures and 'thematic variations' eg. (what is the role of 'it' in 'It's raining today'?) but so long as you've got a grip on the lingo, you'll be fine.

There are weekly assignments that are definitely worth doing, plus two bigger ones over the course of the Semester. The exam was pretty fair, and no surprise to those who had been keeping up with work in tutes. It's not as problem-based as Secret Life in which you get a whole bunch of data sets (ie. lists of words or clauses from different languages with translations) and are told to break apart which words or sounds are which.
eg. pg 2 and 4 of this thing are like amped up versions of what's done in Secret Life.

But because GofE centres on English in particular, there's a bit more theory and rationalisation behind the scenes as opposed to just logic puzzles. There were still quite a few Science and Biomed kids in GofE doing it as a breadth though, and it's certainly not as 'artsy' as stuff like 'Language and Society in Europe,' but even amidst some of the drier content weeks, you'll look at cool things like why adjectives have to be in a certain order (ie. you have to say 'the tall cruel American man' and can't say 'the American tall cruel man' without it sounding weird) or how
... well I think it's cool, at least  :P

Happy to PM you a sample of the tute exercises if you want an idea of what those were like :)

Thanks so much, Lauren! :) To be honest, it sounds pretty interesting! I've always been interested in learning languages and after finishing Italian last year I feel like there's been a bit of a void in my studies. However, I like the different focus linguistics brings to the whole subject area. The fact that it isn't as problem-based actually doesn't bother me that much - like perhaps many Science/Biomedicine students, I'm just not keen on essay writing (which eliminates a tonne of subjects). :P Most seem to opt for Commerce subjects, but personally I find that area boring as. =_= And I'm not up for those rather creative intensives that many flock to.

My biggest concern is the disadvantage in not having done LING10001 beforehand. One thing that caught my attention is the lack of "recommended background knowledge" in the handbook. Honestly, would it be at all jarring or difficult to take LING20011 without LING10001? If not, I think I may lock it in for next year! :)

Having done both Secret Life and GofE I'd say doing the former isn't a necessity since that course has a much wider scope. Secret Life takes you through a whole bunch of different fields: Morphology (word-internal structure, eg. affixes, why 'run' changes to 'ran' in past tense etc.) Syntax (sentence structure) Phonetics/Phonology (speech sounds) [+reviews pending for all these 2nd year subjects too!] It's actually a really well-designed first year course for those planning on doing a Linguistics major/minor because it's got a great depth/breadth balance for all the subjects offered at a higher level.

GofE is just about syntax and grammar, and whilst there's a teensy bit of sociolinguistics and historical linguistics, it's definitely much more focused, and goes into more depth than Secret Life without assuming prior knowledge. It's kind of like Secret Life is a subject about all the different kinds of fruits and vegetables in the world, and Grammar of English is like an in depth study of green apples - technically those who did Secret Life know some things about green apples, but their study was much more disparate, and GofE goes into so much more depth with all the different parts of the apple that everyone's basically on equal footing by that stage.

From memory, when we were asked in the first tute if anyone had done other Linguistics subjects or English Language in VCE, there was a bout a 50/50 split, and after a few weeks, there was no discernible division in the class other than those who 'got it' because they were on top of the work, and those who relied on native intuitions rather than learning the actual theory. Honestly, the fact that you've had experience learning Italian will more than make up for not having done the first year subject. You might be like me and have a few 'OMG THAT'S WHY THE VERB CONJUGATES THIS WAY' moments when you learn the rationale behind why your first and/or second language behaves the way it does, but speaking with the bias of someone who is totally smitten by linguistics, that just made the subject more enjoyable for me :)

Also, Grammar of English is, unsurprisingly, just about English, which makes it waaaaaay easier than subjects like Syntax that throw Scots Gaelic and Basque and obscure Indigenous languages at you every single week  ::)

I don't think it'd be jarring at all, and there's absolutely no essay writing - it's all short answer questions and a few problem solving exercises. Also, the staff are incredibly approachable and always up for a nerdy chat about language-y things, so if you feel a bit perplexed by something then you can always let them know after a lecture or see them during office hours.

Btw, don't buy the textbook - it's about $80 from the co-op and the library has two or three copies in the high-use section anyway. I managed to find a couple of versions online + sneaky pdf link so that can be a good reference point too :)

Has anyone done ENGL30046 Romancing the Medieval, or anything else similar?

Thanks so much :)
I haven't done this specific subject, but I don't think there are many other English students floating around, let alone ones who have done 3rd year subjects, so I might be able to help.

I've done the two first year English subjects, plus Shakespeare and Performance, Modernism and the Avant Garde, American Classics, and Gothic Fictions. According to the handbook Romancing the Medieval is run by Stephanie Trigg who I've had as a lecturer occasionally and seems quite good. The texts also seem pretty decent, and I believe David McInnis might take a few (incl. Canterbury Tales) and having had him in Lit & Performance as well as the Shakespeare subject, he's brilliant.

In general, the 3rd year English subjects are much better run than the 2nd year ones since they're a bit more specific and tend to be handled by just one or two people who take all the lectures and tutes. Compare this to the way 2nd year subjects are run (or at least, Mod&AV and American Classics) where you're getting a different lecturer almost every week and the tutes are totally out of step with them anyway :/

If you've never done an English subject or are looking for a breadth, I can't recommend picking up a 3rd year one. They tend to have a bizarre standard of marking where people very rarely score above a 70, and (quote from a tutor: 'we don't give you anything higher than 85 unless it's good enough to be published.') That said, I've seen such vastly different expectations in each subject to the point where my marks would fluctuate drastically with little explanation. Some of the content has been fairly interesting across the different subjects, but the rather poor way things are run kind of undermines that.

For instance, this is a screencap of the American Classics LMS page from this semester:
Maybe this emptiness is typical in other diciplines, but every single other unit I've done (incl. Linguistics, Art History, Genetics, Philosophy, Botany, Ancient World Studies, Education, Classics, and even a Sign Language breadth) were all far better with communication and providing necessary information.
The 'Subject Home' tab just had links to the other tabs; the 'Subject Information' took you to another site that just reworded what was in the handbook and gave you links to the lecture notes (no recordings >:() 'Announcements,' as you can see, was blank for the entire semester, and the 'Assessment' portal took you to a dodgy thing that wasn't the normal Turnitin and gave you no confirmation that you'd submitted your essays... not that it mattered much because you had to hand in a hardcopy anyway for no adequately explained reason.

This is definitely an extreme example since even the other English subjects I've done weren't this bad, but it's still symptomatic of some serious problems within the discipline that a couple of subjects in particular seem to fall victim to. I don't know whether Romancing the Medieval is one of these, and again, my experience with 3rd year subjects is that they are much more organised, but you may have to have quite a bit of patience to get through it.

On the plus side, based on its handbook details, the subject it seems most like is Gothic Fictions, which was excellent; and it looks like you'd be studying a few texts over a few weeks, rather than the one-per-week system in most of the other subjects. Plus, the fact that you only have two essays plus some class participation means you'll have a fairly light workload excluding the amount of reading (which can all be done over the Summer, or Winter since it's a Sem. 2 subject.) If you really wanted to, you could try doing what I've done a couple of times at the beginning of Semester and get a feel for the lectures and tutes in the first two weeks. If it seems like it's worth sticking around for, then keep it, but plan to have another option or two up your sleeve, and do a little bit of reading up on each one before it starts just in case you want to switch.

I'm a tad disillusioned with the English department though, save for two or three good subjects, so I've tried to keep this objective but you may still have a totally different experience. If you're familiar with the English department so far then let that inform your decision :)

Just wondering, which 1st and 2nd year English subjects are decent? I'm not going to be an English major (I'm planning to do Economics and probably Philosophy) but I'm may do a few English subjects if they are any good.

Out of the ones that are available at the moment (keeping in mind that these tend to change year by year, so some might be added/ditched depending on the numbers)

(ones I've done in red)
1st year:
Literature and Performance
Modernism and Contemporary Literature

2nd year:
Australian Imagery
Romanticism, Feminism, Revolution
Modernism and Avant Garde
Adaptation and Transgression
Theatre Experience
American Classics
Poetry, Love, and Death
Modern and Contemporary Drama
Reverberations of Terror: 1789-1900
Shakespeare in Performance

To address the 2nd year subjects first, you've got a pretty broad array of choices which is a good thing. Out of the ones I've done, Shakespeare in Performance would be the only one I'd recommend. I'm writing up Subject Reviews for the others at the moment, but suffice it to say that any interest I had in either Modernism or American Classics was quelled by the poor coordination and vague assessment outlines/ feedback.

I'd definitely recommend the first year subjects over the second year ones though. Lit and Performance is really well run with a broad range of texts (two Shakespeare plays, some poetry, three Victorian novels and two proto-Modernist plays) and very clear overview of what the three essays require of you. The Semester 2 subject was a little less impressive (full explanation here) but I'd still consider worthwhile.

However, having spoken to people in other English subjects too (Poetry, Love, and Death; Adaptations; & Reverberations of Terror) the 2nd year subjects don't make for very good breadth/elective options. Even in the second semester subject in first year, I lost track of the amount of times a lecturer or tutor would say something like '...which is something you will have covered in first semester,' so going into a 2nd year subject without having done the first might cause some disorientation when it comes to assessment, even if you're able to handle the content. If you're doing Philosophy then you should be alright with the essay side of things, but if you get a dodgy tutor - as has happened to me in the past - then it's a struggle to work out what you need to do to understand the assessment, let alone bolster your marks.

Unfortunately, although I'd love to recommend the third year subject Gothic Fictions, it looks like they're changing the lecturer and a bunch of the texts for next year, so I'm not too sure how that one will be in the future. I'll be doing Genre/Pop Fiction and Decadent Lit. next year which both look good, as well as the Capstone (Critical Debates) so I'll get around to reviewing those too.

I know absolutely nothing about the Economics Department because I have a mortal fear of commerce, but the Philosophy Department is really good! There's a tonne of really interesting lecturers who I could listen to for hours, and they're way clearer about essay requirements and general course information than most of the other faculties are. If I had my time over, I probably would've just done Linguistics and Philosophy with the odd English elective, but hindsight's 20/20 :/

I did Rebels and Revolutionaries (2nd year history) as a breadth. It was really good. Subject was organised and well coordinated since they've been running it for years, content was interesting and only 2 assessments (+tute participation).

The review page hasn't been fully updated yet. The user Amity wrote a great BusFi review on page 30 on the reviews thread.

My personal recommendation is to do BusFi in sem 1. The MST and exam in sem 2 seemed way harder than the ones given in sem 1. Joshua Shemesh is also a pretty good lecturer, assuming he teaches in semester 1 again like he did in 2015.

yeah man i did intro macro. it was a pretty good subject, it was kinda difficult but you learn pretty interesting stuff if you put in the effort to conceptually learn it. i really enjoyed it. if you did vce eco it is pretty reminiscent of that in parts. alot of people dont like the lecturer though but i thought he was an ok lad but i also thought the micro lecture was cool too which alot of ppl disagree with. overall good subject and interesting content. it probably wont help you as much in your professional or personal life as much as micro or finance but it will make you a better voter and will make you be able to read pretty much any economic article and fully understand what is going on. if you have 1 more level 1 breadth space and wanna do a comm subject id definitely reccomend macro over management. cant speak for marketing but people generally enjoyed that one.

good luck with whatever you choose

A number of requests for a BCMB30004 (Cell Signalling & Neurochem) review so I will write a short one here and maybe a full length one later on.

Negatives:
The subject timetable wasn't uploaded until like week 3. Prof Cheng (main lecturer/subject coordinator) uploads dozens of files onto the LMS, ranging from extra lectures from different scientists to molsoft (protein visualizing software) files. There is never any clear indication as to what amount of detail you are expected to know for the assessments, from the lectures (he goes into tons of detail in some) and from these extra learning materials for A/prof Cheng's part. He insists that everything is important but going through everything would take all the time in your life, so try and be smart about what you decide to leave out of revision. You also had to listen to a number of pre-recorded lectures (from previous years?) to be fully prepared for the MSTs and the exam. Many of the slides by A/prof Cheng and one or two other lecturers were chaotic and made revision much harder, which I think has been brought up in other subject reviews.

The MSTs are oddly timed at the end of week 8 and in week 11, meaning mst1, a 7.5% exam assesses 7 weeks of content in like 40 mins while MST2 only tests like 3. The saving grace was that if you knew your lectures very well (Tip: learn how to draw/explain things in a diagram) getting H1s on both was quite possible, or so I was told  :P For the 15% essay you get to choose from a range of topics given by each of the main lecturers. I chose Prof Cheng's, which had no clear link to the course content of Cell Signalling and Neurochemistry. The topic was interesting though.

I wasn't a fan of many of the lecturers either whose lecturing styles I thought were very uninspiring. One of the guest lecturers went into tons and tons of detail and left many things on the slides out of her explanations. Many of the lectures feel disjointed, partly because 'Cell Signalling' and 'Neurochemistry' are mostly separate concepts.

With that said there were positives as well: A lot of the things I found really interesting, like how the molecular phenotype of Alzheimer's and Parkinsons' disease, and how post-translational modifications play such a big role in disease and physiological process. Prof Cheng makes an effort every year to update his slides so you know what you learn is current. Some of the lecturers were great (Guest lecturer Dr Nandurkar and A/prof Bogoyevitch come to mind) and were passionate about their research. I found the assessments to be fair if you knew everything, although there was lots and lots of detail to know at times. The assignment (although I can only speak for Prof Cheng's topic) was marked fairly and my friends who put in the work for it got good marks. Some of the lecturers did state clearly what level of detail is expected, which were very helpful when it came to revision. Some of the tutorials was dedicated to molsoft viewing of proteins and exploring how structure affects function, which was also a really good idea to promote student engagement and understanding of the content. I think all biochem subjects should consider doing something like this.

So that's my honest review of BCMB30004, hopefully you guys find it useful  :)

I would, but I really hate coriander....

Remind me in the next week or so and I'll try to get on to one. TL;DR: a challenging subject, you'll never work harder but the reward at the end of it is absolutely worth it. Hands down the most useful subject I've done at uni, great cohort, well organised, lots of support, excellent experiences. Do it.

challenging as in you have to put a lot of work into it, or difficult to understand? I don't think that the content is particularly challenging. Certainly, the exam is difficult because you're really short on time, but it's definitely manageable. The content is actually quite interesting, so that helps. It's difficult because of the amount of work that goes into it. You certainlywon't work harder for 12.5 points. With that said though, it is a wonderful subject and, as I said, it's well worth the effort.

Any 2nd year Philosophy subjects like PHIL20043 History of Early Modern Philosophy, PHIL20038 Nietzsche and Critics or PHIL20041 Phenomenology and Existentialism
I haven't yet done any 2nd year Philosophy subjects myself, but I've got a friend who's done almost all of them, and apparently they're all very well taught. I'm making my way through this vimeo series that's meant to complement PHIL20030: Meaning Possibility and Paradox, which seems to overlap a bit with the Phenomenology one. I don't know any of the coordinators for the ones you've listed, but the department in general is one of the better ones in Arts.
If you're considering one of those subjects, you could just crash a few lectures for all three of them in the first few weeks and see how they look :P

Anyone know anything about;

HIST20060 Total War: World War II
HIST20065 Rebels and Revolutionaries
ENGL20020 Romanticism, Feminism, Revolution
Total War has been reviewed once here and seems decent. Don't know anything about Rebels and Revolutionaries except that, like Philosophy, the History department has a pretty good rep aside from the fact that they're apparently super strict about referencing.

I can help with RFR though since someone asked about it here (+ a follow-up). I haven't done it so can't give a full review, but it's taught by Tom Ford who's brilliant, so if the texts sound interesting to you then I'd highly recommend it :)

It's the best subject! Do yourself (and humanity) a favour and definitely take it, and try to get Shane as a tutor if you can. To be honest, I didn't even go to lectures for it, but found in-class discussion really stimulating and really made me think about the world differently. Plus the blog assessment is really easy marks if you just post something every week (90% of people do it the night before it's due). Easy H1 and super interesting!

I wrote VERY detailed reviews for COMP30024, COMP30023, SWEN30006 and BMEN20001. They are like 2-4k words each. I don't know if I should post them in their current form. They contain a lot of detail about the entire experience, from subject content / breakdown to assessment information. I have tried to keep ranting to a minimum and share only information that will benefit future student choices. What do you guys think, will these fit in on the subject reviews thread? If not, I'll keep them and write abridged reviews that just describe the basic feel of the subject to aid in quick elective-choosing, I guess.

Here's a sample (beware of typos and other errors haha):

BMEN20001 Biomechanical Physics and Computation
Subject Code/Name: BMEN20001 Biomechanical Physics and Computation

This is a relatively new subject, 2016 semester 1 marked its second offering. It's still got some teething problems to grow out of, which I would put down to an underexperienced teaching team.

The subject's aim is to serve as a combination of ENGR20004 Engineering Mechanics and COMP20005 Engineering Computation, embedded in a biomechanics context. That is, we study the same topics but where engineering students might focus on steel bars supporting loads we'll look at human limbs holding weights. We also spent some time considering the complications that arise when analysing organic materials such as bone and skin.

The intended audience is biomed students looking to master the physics foundations necessary for studying biomechanics. I don't fit this description, as a Physics and Computing student interested in applying what I know in a new context. For someone like me, this subject wasn't that bad. It acted as an interesting extension of VCE Physics topics (the 'mechanics' core AoS and the 'structures and materials' detailed study) plus an introduction to yet another programming language (MATLAB).

However, for someone with zero background in physics or computation (the intended audience), I think this subject would have been a lot more difficult to manage. I'd say possible with a fair bit of work getting up to speed on the basics, but otherwise the necessary time wasn't really spent laying those foundations, and the MATLAB learning experience was liable scare anyone new to computing away from the field for good.

The rest of this review is pretty long. I've included a lot of detail about the topics we covered, the class experience, and the assessments. I hope it aids people in their decisions about this subject, and helps people taking it / required to take it know what kind of experience to expect.

Workload:
Three 1h lectures (less on average, however; see comments!)
One 2h workshop (sometimes a tutorial, sometimes a MATLAB class)

Assessment:

5% - Assignment 1
10% - Assignment 2
10% - Assignment 3
15% - Assignment 4, groups of 4

10% - Mid-semester test
50% - 3h exam in exam period

Lecture Capture: Y

Past exams available:
There were no past exams available because all of the previous exam questions had been included as tutorial questions (only one previous exam this time round).

Lecturer:

The content lectures were presented by Vijay Rajagopal.

Additionally, there was a guest lecture from one of the tutors, a series of three guest lectures on head injury by Andrew Short, and a series of three further guest lectures from various biomechanics researchers.

Year & Semester of completion: 2016 Semester 1

Rating: 3/5

Your Mark/Grade: 95

Technologies:

This subject served as an (admittedly poor) introduction to programming using MATLAB. Learning MATLAB was the focus of most of the workshops, and the first three assignments were mostly programming.

Textbook Recommendation:

There were four recommended textbooks, from which the course material was drawn. These were:
- Humphrey JD, and Delange SL, An Introduction to Biomechanics
- Nihat O. Nordin M, Goldsheyder D, and Leger D, Fundamentals of Biomechanics, 3rd Edition
- Meriam Jl and Kraige LG, Engineering Mechanics: Dynamics, 7th Edition
- Hibbeler RC, Statics and Mechanics of Materials, 3rd Edition

I personally used a very old edition of Hibbeler (like 1991 or something, I think it's technically not even the same book as it was just called 'Mechanics of Materials') and I found it absolutely fantastic, but that's coming from a strong maths and physics background and with a preference for comprehensive textbooks that leave no ambiguity and don't shy away from complexity. It was also a regular engineering text, with no biomechanical context. Nevertheless, it was an enlightening read; one of those textbooks that answers all of your questions as soon as they form, and also really gives you a big-picture view of the material.

Some of the other texts might serve as a better introduction to these physics concepts, but they seemed to also assume a bit of a background in biology, of which I had none. Therefore, I recommend the Hibbeler option for anyone with my background.

Comments:

Content:

The 'physics' in 'biomechanical physics and computation' stands for statics (the study of materials undergoing forces but not moving), and dynamics (the study of objects in motion). These topics were the focus of the lectures. The 'computation' represents an approach to these problems that utilises computers, which can do the grunt work of crunching numbers, repeating calculations and plotting graphs. This was the focus of the workshops. Of course, everything was looked at through a biomechanics perspective.

In terms of statics, we quickly whizzed through the basics of forces and moments (a.k.a. torques, shout out to VCE Physics students) and then looked at the much more confusing topic of internal forces and moments (like within bones or at joints). After that was a look at the concepts of stress and strain (normal and shear), extending to applications of forces in 3D, as well as other material properties (especially those relevant to biological materials, like skin). We were going to discuss beams but skipped that topic and went straight to axial loading, and finally looked at thin-walled spherical and cylindrical pressure vessels (arteries/veins and aneurysms!).

For dynamics, again we quickly touched on the basics of motion and relative motion of particles - position, velocity, and acceleration. We also looked quickly at work and energy. We then spent some time on linear momentum (for collision analysis) and things like the coefficient of restitution, and then on rotational motion and angular momentum. Finally, we had a brief look at rigid bodies (bodies bigger than a particle, where rotation matters) and some more powerful and general equations of motion that can be used to analyse rigid body systems.

Despite the appearances from the handbook entry, I think this subject was pitched a little too fast as an introduction to these physics concepts. I think for someone completely new to mechanics (statics and dynamics), a bit much was assumed and the basics/foundational points were skimmed over. I would recommend that someone in this position try very hard to master the basics before tackling the later topics, and recommend resources such as khanacademy's high school motion playlists for this purpose.

The 'computation' part spanned everything from variables and data types to control structures (branching and looping) and functions. Despite the presence in the handbook, numerical methods for solving differential equations were not explored. Numerical simulations were carried out, but they were for simple projectile motion situations. This was the domain of the majority of the workshops, which I'll talk more about later.

Lectures:

Vijay's lectures weren't bad, but I'd say as a relatively new lecturer he's definitely got some improvement to do in terms of presenting these concepts. This semester, there were a few topics that seemed to be lost on students. One was a matrix method for converting between 3D stresses and strains, but this was identified and I think Vijay is going to use a much more intuitive approach next semester. Another (this wasn't so much the feeling of the cohort but of myself) tricky point that was neglected was the difference between tensorial shear strain and engineering shear strain. It turns out that tensorial shear strain (ε), used in the matrix equations, actually has twice the value of engineering shear strain (γ), used in other formulas. This subtle point was hidden in the definitions of the matrix equations on the slides and I feel like more attention could have been drawn to it, and a very clear distinction made between the shear strains.

Apart from a few tricky points like this, it's easy to see why Vijay always looks so happy and cheerful when he's lecturing - you can tell he loves sharing his passion for biomechanics with people and teaching the concepts too. He was very kind, friendly, and approachable. His priority was everyone's understanding, which is why he always went out of his way to give the best explanations possible (e.g. repeating a lecture or two in response to student questions). Because his heart is demonstrably in the right place, I have no doubt that he'll continually improve his teaching quality in semesters to come.

Vijay also adopted the unconventional (but effective, IMO) strategy of offering lectures dedicated to working through problems, as a demonstration of how to apply the equations and laws we were learning. This was good because particularly in physics, getting into the process of using theory to solve problems is just as important as getting your head around the theory in the first place. I am glad that this was reflected in the lecture schedule.

The other thing about these problem classes, along with the large number of guest lectures (7 in total) and the mid-sem test, was that it left a reduced number of content-lectures. From 3 lectures a week, there ended up being 18 assessable content lectures. This made for a fairly light revision load, and it was very manageable to master the material in swotvac (fine-tuning understanding of pre-MST statics content, and conquering dynamics too).

Workshops:

Unfortunately, the workshops for this subject were quite a big let down. Since I came with prior knowledge in computing, I was able to ignore the explanations of the foundational programming concepts. I fear, however, that other students were not so lucky. Nothing that was presented in the workshops was useful beyond what a short online MATLAB (or any other programming language) tutorial would offer, and some of the explanations were outright incorrect and potentially damaging to students' basic understanding of programming concepts.

I don't have faith that the tutors will improve in future semesters (unless they are replaced). If I'm right, then for anyone new to computing and interested in taking this subject, I recommend treating everything presented in the workshops as suspect. Then, I'd advise taking the list of content presented and seeking alternate resources for learning those things. I didn't get a chance to explore it, but I'd be willing to bet that this online course from MIT (the small part of it that is relevant) runs rings around these guys. Short of that, you can PM me on ATAR Notes to help explain a piece of MATLAB code. You can search on Google. Anything other than trusting the demonstrators with your impressions about computing - it's such a wonderful area of study and it really hurt me to see it presented like it was.

A few of the workshops were not allocated to MATLAB, but instead to worked examples, kinda like in the lectures. Due to the general incompetence of the demonstrators, this was equivalent to working through the problems alone or with peers. This does bring me to a small point of confusion, though. Each week, topical 'tutorial' questions were uploaded. Sometimes, a selection of these questions were covered in an example-lecture. Other weeks, the workshop was dedicated to working through them. Either way, the tutorial sheets were just a source of application questions (with accompanying solutions, of varying correctness) even though there was no official 'tutorial'.

Assignments:

The first three assignments involved a mechanics problem followed by a short MATLAB scripting task. The problem was that the instructions weren't clear, and often the incomplete information given was not really enough to complete the tasks. In several cases, LMS announcements came out afterwards clearing up some of these points, but I think it's really important to minimise this kind of thing - obviously assignment tasks should be as complete as possible upon release so that students are not disadvantaged in the time they have to complete them waiting for things to be cleared up. Also, any assumptions made should not later by invalidated by LMS announcements. These issues generally didn't affect me, but they made the assignments come across as incredibly unpolished overall. I hope that in the future these little glitches can be ironed out before assignment release.

Then came the fourth assignment. In about week 7 it was announced that the final assignment would involve group work, which was the first we had heard of it. During week 9, a set of three guest lectures on head impact and head injury was presented by guest lecturer Andrew Short. That week, the workshop was replaced with a fake-head-dropping experiment, after which we were ushered into groups of 4 students and vaguely told that the final assignment would be a four-part practical report based on these experiments.

Later, more detailed information (almost in the form of an assignment specification!) surfaced. The report was to have four parts: a literature review on impact testing, a report on the experimental procedure and equipment, and analysis of the results, and a discussion of the findings and any compliance issues with respect to an impact testing standards document we were given. Most of the descriptions of the expectations were ambiguous. Some of it was incomprehensible. Within my group, I took primary responsibility for the analysis section since nobody else really wanted to use MATLAB. This section, in particular, was a shambles. Part of the task was to analyse the motion of a fake head as it fell and bounced on different materials. This was meant to be conducted by manually tracking some dots attached to the head form in video recordings of the drop tests. This frame-by-frame tracking (as demonstrated in the week 10 workshop) was quite a long process, and we were looking for a way to automate it. In the week 11 workshop, we were provided with some MATLAB scripts that attempted to track the dots for us. However, these scripts were very fragile, and even after repeated updates released by Andrew, failed to analyse all of the videos without crashing. I ended up streamlining the manual tracking script and using that instead.

In the final week (much to my frustration, for the same reasons as above), Andrew took the LMS discussion forums to construct an FAQ list, detailing things assignment advice (mostly things that should have been in the initial specification). At this point, it was far too late to perform our analysis again and so we just had to stick with our manual data. We did manage to incorporate some advice into the other sections. However, it just shouldn't have been expected that we would be completing the majority of our work in the final week before the due date.

Worst of all, one night before the due date, another (apparently, finally working) version of the analysis script was released. Other scripts were still broken and I never had a chance to try the new analysis script but I have a hunch that it wouldn't actually be free of bugs, but attempting to release the required material for the assignment the night before the due date when it should have worked from the beginning really angered and upset me.

I think the entire cohort felt miserable about the impossibly frustrating final assignment. I can't imagine it will survive the SES reviews unchecked, and I sincerely hope that it is improved for future iterations of the subject.

The assessment was plagued by other small administrative issues such as the due-dates not being announced with the assignments, and LMS resubmissions before the due-date being accidentally disallowed on 3/4 of the assignments (those administered by the demonstrators, ha) just caused a lot of unnecessary stress.

MST and Exam:

Though tutorial and lecture examples were a mix of typical engineering examples and simplified biomechanical examples, the questions on the MST and final exam were largely drawn from a biomechanical context. Both tests were fairly well-balanced in terms of time and difficulty, with the majority of questions being similar to those found in lecture examples or tutorial sheets. I made an effort to work through every tutorial question before the exam and was rewarded for that this preparation by an exam with no surprises. However, the difficulty of the final exam questions was a little higher than that of most of the tutorial questions. I'm certainly glad we had three hours because I needed all of it to complete the paper.

Overall:

In taking this subject I accomplished my goals of learning about applying my physics and computing knowledge to a new and interesting domain. However, as a subject aimed at introducing biomedicine students to physics and computation, BMEN20001 has a fair way to go.

The assignments needed to be better thoughtout, and to provide all necessary information at release time. The demonstrators were shocking, and the workshops were possibly worse than useless. The pacing of the content was out of step with the impression given by the handbook entry, and more attention could have been paid to the foundational concepts (or more careful attention; it's just very important to avoid introducing confusion at that level because it underlies the rest of the entire subject and indeed all of Classical Mechanics!).

Hopefully, the coordinators listen to the feedback they receive and take steps to improve on some of the points. For those considering taking this subject, think about what you want to get out of it. For those who need to take this subject, I'm sure you'll be able to get through it, and feel free to PM me with any questions you might have!

The rest are similar in size and scope. Thoughts?

EDIT: Maybe the trick is to use spoiler tags and a tl;dr summary to make them more approachable?

I had to fight the urge to do that! I think writing these (and writing about all the personal highs and lows of the semester) is a really great way to let of steam after a long semester, and I have felt a lot of satisfaction and closure drafting these up.

Thanks for taking the time to read, I think I'll work on them a little more and make sure you don't have to set aside too much time to get something out of them

Unfortunately, you'll be part of the first ever cohort, as it's a new subject this year!

You might find some info about the labs in parts of previous PHYC20009/10/11 reviews, but the 'computational' side will probably be new stuff, and even the labs will probably be pretty different as they're literally ripping all labs out of the old second-year physics subjects and making them into their own subject, so I imagine things will change.

Hi nobody008,

PHYC20011 won't be running next year, nor will PHYC20009 and PHYC20010.

Instead, PHYC20012, PHYC20013, PHYC20014 and PHYC20015 will be replacing these three subjects. It might be worth looking these up in the handbook, since these new subjects started this year, so will run for the second time in 2017.

Could someone do a review on

FNCE30008: Street Finance?

After reading the subject description, it sounds like a fantastic subject and opportunity. However, i'm also quite wary that job applications generally require 1st and 2nd year subject results.

Three written lesson plans (45%)
Assessment of 1 (out of 3) school presentations (25%)
Reflective essay: 2,000 words (30%)

The assessment seems like it leaves a lot down to subjectivity (i tend to prefer quantitative subjects where there's a strong correlation for effort to reward).

Any experience would be greatly appreciated! :)

Alternatively, if you know anyone who has done it, could you please let me know? Thanks!!

also, is there any coding in business analytics? I did computing so I can do it but I'm not really prepared to spend much time on it
otherwise, can anyone suggest an easy level 2 or 3 breadth for a commerce/actuarial student that isn't useless/uninteresting?

Hi,

I made a review for CHEM20018 on 20 July 2016, but there doesn't seem to be any link on the index yet. Is there some way that I can link it?

Thanks  :)

It really shouldn't be. French 5 is suitable for those who did reasonably well in high school French.
In terms of workload, it's all relatively. Language subjects can be challenging, but French 3 should be fairly breezy if you've just finished VCE French.
Title: Re: Subject Review Requests
Post by: Alter on January 28, 2017, 01:47:36 pm
I agree with vox. You should also keep in mind that many people doing French 3 have only learned French for <1 year of their life, by doing 1 and 2 at university. Logically, if you've been doing it since year 7 (or whenever you started), then you should be a fair cut above. Best of luck.

Title: Re: Subject Review Requests
Post by: Chelsea f.c. on March 01, 2018, 08:52:33 pm
Won't do a subject review but I've done a prob and stats diploma and did modern applied stats... not to be unkind the subject was a bit of a mess last sem as hee Jung shim arrived the day before sem started and inherited the content where lectures and tutorials did not complement each other as they were written by different people over different years or taken out of books... nevertheless I would still recommend it as if your doing linear models which I enjoyed as it builds on top of and complements it and hee Jung shim was nice and assignments and exams were not too difficult and were fun... hopefully with a full year to prepare youll get a better product than we did...

as a second year I heard of the reputation of differential equations under Barry Hughes but seeing as with a new lecturer I found it not too difficult where it had previously been ridiculously hard I thought nothing of it and foolishly enrolled in applied mathematical modelling which was nightmare where people I know with h1 averages got h3s... I precede prob for inference with this as prepare to work hard under kotsya as though I have not done it it's got a bit of a reputation... though if your interested in financial maths I.e. Quant trading kotsya could be your man as his the guru on financial mathematics (big demand for masters thesis ;) )

Graph theory's supposedly interesting and not hard (for a maths subject ;) - as I'm really BCom) and do linear models and stochastic =)

(Not sure if I'll get in trouble for posting in this friend as I'm really a lurker come results but hopefully this helps!)

I’ve heard that Criminology alone & Psychology as double degree hasn’t provided much experience for graduates to become employed. Any opinions on the two courses would be extremely helpful!
