Monash University: Caulfield campus guide

I thought I would make a general thread for students who are new to the Caulfield campus of Monash University or are looking to study here.

A map of the campus is shown here:

The K, B, F and H buildings hold the majority of lecture theatres. This is obviously where your lectures are held. It may initially take a week or two to find your way around campus. Lectures are by no means compulsory and some of your lectures may be recorded online. You will probably find that less students will turn up to lectures each week as the semester progresses, and then the lecture theatre will be filled to capacity in week 12 (right before exams). If you attend lectures, try to pay attention because often the side comments the lecturer(s) say might well come up on the exam. And try to avoid sleeping in lectures too.

The N and B buildings are where you may have a lot of your tutorials (depending on what you’re studying). The size of tutorials is far, far smaller in comparison to your lectures. Again, by no means compulsory. But I would recommend going if it counts towards assessment for the particular unit. Generally, it involves greater in-depth discussion and provides an overview of what was covered in the lecture.

The H building contains most of the BusEco departments and if you are a BusEco student, then this is where you will generally submit your assignments (hopefully on time).

Other faculties including the Arts, Art, Design and Architecture, Information Technology, Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences are based in the other buildings on campus.

The S building is the student union area, where most students hang out during breaks. It generally has a vibrant atmosphere. It houses Bubble Cup, Cafe Monsu, the Overseas Student Services Lounge and a range of other outlets. Pricing on food n’ stuff isn’t too bad. The lawn area in front of the K building is a good place to chill with friends when it’s a sunny day.

There is only one library on the Caulfield campus. It is across from the B building and where students tend to cram during SWOTVAC. Instead of purchasing brand new textbooks (which can be incredibly expensive), more often than not you can borrow them from the library - you can keep borrowing and returning a textbook for the whole semester (saving money like a boss) or scan the pages. That said, The Campus Bookstore is also located on campus. Attend the first week or two of lectures/tutorials, and then decide if you need to buy textbooks.

Other outlets on campus include: Camino Coffee House, Gryph Inn Bar and Bistro, Fresco Juice Bar, MamaDuke and Tower Sushi. All good places but some of the stuff they sell can be pricey. If you are looking for value for money, the Caulfield Plaza is right next to the campus. It has some good outlets in there (Coles, a bakery, take away food). There are also a few Asian restaurants (Korean, Jap), a KFC outlet, Gloria Jeans and a 7-eleven just off campus.

The Caulfield campus also holds tennis courts and a gym (for those of you who want to bulk up). Monash University also has various sport teams, so if you are into sports - there is your chance to shine.

If you are going to drive to uni and back, there is a multi-level car park. The Caulfield railway station is right outside the campus, and there are also trams which run to the city - as well as connecting buses. There is also a shuttle bus which runs every couple of hours during the day between the Caulfield and Clayton campuses (in semester).

Enrolment day

Enrolment day is pretty chill. You’re pretty much there to collect your student ID card (take a good photo!) and to ensure that you've enrolled into the correct units.

- If you are a domestic student, more information can be found here: http://www.monash.edu.au/enrolments/first-time/domestic/decide-offer.html
- If you are a international student, more information can be found here: http://www.monash.edu.au/enrolments/first-time/international/start-enrolment.html

O-week is a few weeks after enrolment and this provides the opportunity for you to join clubs and societies. This is also a good chance to get freebies when you join clubs and societies (who doesn’t love freebies?). During O-week, clubs/societies also run pub crawls, movie nights and other exciting shit. More importantly, you should take the chance to meet new people as it helps you integrate into university life. Check your faculty’s website for more specific information.

I would also read this when you are working out your timetable: Allocate+ / MUTTS Guide --- Please read before posting.
