Task words for Exams and Assessments

"I wrote so much words and was so detailed! WHY did I NOT the marks that I wanted."

Two common questions are:
    - How do I get the maximum marks?
    - Do I need to write more, to get more marks?

    The answer to these questions are TASK WORDS and no.
    P.S. Waffling in general is a bad idea for exams, you should try target the question and see what they are asking for. It is also  a big mistake that many students do

    So you ask... what are task words?

    Task words or keywords are words that direct you to do some sort of action or discussion.

    Here is a list of task words.
    P.S. Look out for words like Explain, identify, list, to what extent


    How do I use task words?
    Look at what they asking for and then answer it!

    Example 1
    Explain how the different intermolecular forces in butane and butan-1-ol give these two compounds different boiling points. 3 marks”
    >> Write down why the butan-1-ol forms hydrogen bonds
    >> Give two compounds different boiling points
    >> Make a comparison between two different compounds

    Relation to keyword?
    Explain: Tell how things work or how they came to be the way they are.
    ....

    Example 2
    Outline two examples of physiological information that can be gained from data
    collected in a skill–frequency table.
    >> Just list down two examples

    Relation to task word?
    Indicate the main features of a topic or sequence of events
    ...

    Example 3
     Assess both strategies and suggest the most suitable strategy for the tennis player in this
    situation.
    >> Talk about water and its benefits
    >> Talk about Isotonic sports drinks and their benefits
    >> Choose one and give a justification

    Relation to task word?
    Assess: Consider the value or importance of something, paying due attention to positive, negative and disputable aspects, and citing the judgements of any known authorities as well as your own.

    3. Sticking to keywords can save you time and writing!
