Heyyy HHD peeps!
As you 2014 HHD'ers know, the HHD study design will be changing for 2014! However, don't worry too much as the changes are only minor ones and don't resemble the sort of change that occurred from 2009->2010 (when they changed the whole unit 4 AOS 2). The changes for 2014 HHD are only changes in terms of a few study design dot points. So past exams and Qs will still be relevant!
I'll outline a few of the changes for Unit 3 and 4 below:-
Unit 3 Outcome 1-> "Physical Environments" is a determinant of health you will be learning, along with your usual Biological, Behavioural & Social determinants
-> VCAA have now combined the two nutrition related (role of nutrition in addressing diseases + nutrient list) dot points into one - and you only have to now learn nutrients specifically related to the major diseases/health conditions in which nutrition plays a role (i.e. cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, colorectal cancer, obesity and osteoporosis). This means you only need to know the role (and major food sources of) protein, carbohydrate, fibre, fats (mono, poly, saturated & trans), water, calcium, phosphorus, sodium and vitamin D. That means, you no will no longer need to learn about iron, fluoride, iodine, vitamin A, vitamin C, folate and B12 (YAY!)
-> As for Glycaemic Index (GI), it is no longer stated in the new study design, HOWEVER you may learn about it in relation to protective/risk nutrients for diabetes mellitus (low GI/high GI foods) or in relation to the Diabetes Mellitus NHPA
Unit 3 Outcome 2-> No more Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs) and how it promotes healthy eating
-> No more Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) and how they promote healthy eating
-> Only need to know Nutrition Australia for the NGO that promotes healthy eating dot point (no more Heart Foundation and using the Heart Foundation Tick in your answers to "promoting healthy eating" Qs!
)
Unit 4 Outcome 1-> You are no longer required to know definitions for developed and developing countries, but you MUST know the characteristics that the WHO uses to classify them (e.g. life expectancies, U5MR, literacy rates etc). Unfortunately, WHO mortality Strata (A-E) is still in there for you guys!
-> Along with knowing how to define Human Development and Sustainability, you should also now be able to define the elements of sustainability. You still need to be able to also apply these concepts in relation to "Evaluate the elements of sustainability in the given program" Qs
-> The influence of factors on developing countries compared to Australia has been clarified: so that peace/political stability are one factor (and for good reason! They were too similar to be distinguished as two separate factors haha). Also, global marketing has been clarified to specifically refer to the global marketing of alcohol, tobacco and processed/fast food industries, which will better guide answering Qs
Unit 4 Outcome 2-> Non Government Organisation aid (aid from NGOs) will be included as a type of aid that you need to know how to define, identify in a given program (if it's being used) and also you need to be able to explain how NGO aid promotes global health and sustainable human development
-> The dot point for "core functions of the WHO" has been changed to the "Agenda of the WHO" - the Agenda of the WHO is a new concept and the main thing you need to be familiar with - and it is a broader six-point guideline list that indicates the 6 main ways the WHO aims to promote global health & Sustainable Human Development (see here:
http://www.who.int/about/agenda/en/). However, I believe you'll still be touching upon the core functions anyway because the WHO fulfils its broader agenda through the more specific and related core functions
-> AusAid has been removed and replaced with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and we now focus on their work in Australian aid initiatives. AusAid was removed because the Government decided to abolish AusAid in November 2013, meaning there was no point of having it in the hhd study design anymore!
-> The last dot point (memorising 1 program for each health/hd issue) now has an added issue of Immunisation - so along with the other 4 (HIV/AIDS & Malaria, Food Security, Literacy and Safe water & Sanitation), you will also need to memorise 1 program for Immunisation. Also, for each program you must be able to explain how it helps to promote sustainable human development
So all in all, there aren't that many changes! I think the changes that have been made are really good changes as they clarify a lot of the iffy dot points of the study design that were causing some confusion for previous years students
If I've made any errors above or haven't mentioned something, someone correct me!
Hope you guys enjoy HHD!!!
- and pleaseee bring any Qs to this board!
We're all happy to help you out!!
(okay enough smileys for now
