Title: Communal University Journey Journal
Post by: Joseph41 on March 18, 2017, 11:33:34 am
After the success of this thread here, I thought that we should try out a similar thing for uni stuff. 8)

Basically, you just make journal entries in this thread when you feel like it, pertaining to your day, your concerns, your thoughts about the future, or whatever else. If nothing else, I think it'll be a) really useful to read for those just starting uni in the future; and b) a nice place for collaboration - I feel the university boards are a little segmented at the moment. :)

Will this be the most active thread on the forums? I don't know - but there's only one way to find out. ;D

Oo, I love this!

I'm actually taking a day off uni work today but I'll add a couple of thoughts from the week.

- I had two assignments due this week and one test. History, philosophy, and linguistics respectively. Everything I found alright but I'm still dealing with a lot of uncertainty/self-doubt because I'm just not sure what's expected of me, really. :-\
- We did tongue yoga in our linguistics tutorial this week- that was an experience. ::)
- Early days but I'm still thinking about majors/minors and what units I might take next semester, and just in general what the future might hold for me. I definitely want to take politics next semester (I kind of regret not taking it this semester) but I'm undecided about literature at the moment. I've always been good at English and it's something I've always loved but I really don't enjoy the lectures or tutes. ???

^What was the Ling test, Coffee?
The one on Moodle? It was a few admin questions and then about eight true/false questions relating to linguistics. I think it was only worth 5 or 10%.

Great idea!! 8)

I have no real news for today but:
18-3-2017
- Tried to research stuff for a physiology presentation (which backfired because I forgot about mum's plans for the day)
- Took a break from studying to visit my grandma in Geelong. (Pro-tip: don't ever wear heels whilst walking around there, plenty of blisters :( )
- Celebrated the physiology quiz score I got hint: the score is wayyyyy more than 50(because I know probably next to nothing on the subject atm lol) by buying sushi. (Sushi is one of my fave foods :P )
- Got home and realised I forgot that I still have to finish some physical chemistry stuff (the Russian lady who runs the subject is really, really frightening)
- I've finally finished reading over the 3 pracs and the lab I have next week.
TL;DR- My typical Saturday, haha

Just before clicking on this thread to read your comment I was stressing over whether to transfer into Arts/Law or Arts/Education LOL. I have no idea either, man. :'(

Sunday 19 March:
- yeah, just read over some slides, made some notes and answered some questions that the teacher put weeks ago which I forgot to look at :P
It's so inconvenient when your textbooks still haven't been delivered yet  :(

Another awesome thread mate!  8)

Sunday 19th
- Had a shit tonne of uni work to do this weekend. Did jnext to none of it. I now have twice as much shit to do this week >:(
- Had a read through the project for my Digital Signal Processing class - Basically, I need to implement a 5 band equaliser (the thing where you can turn up the bass, turn down the treble, etc), and had a mini panic attack because I have absolutely no clue how I am going to do that  :-X
- Also have a quiz for Electronics next week I started studying for tonight and I've realised I know almost none of the stuff I need to...

Wow, I promise I'm doing a little better than it sounds right now!  ::)

20-3-17
- Had a 3hr lab today (first for the week)
- Didn't yield the cool acid as a powder, but wasn't worried because we got the oil instead! :3
- Starts at 8am tomorrow morning- I might need that coffee someone's offering me, haha.
- I should probably do the physiology moodle lesson rn, but I need to answer some bioorganic chem questions first.

- Linguistics lecture this morning. Kate Burridge is amazing- enough said. Also shoutout to Kate for putting Benedict Cumberbatch on two of the lecture slides. ;D
- Studied with a friend this morning and cried over our linguistics assignment.
- Also had a philosophy lecture at noon <3
- Spent the afternoon at the library drafting a literature assignment and having way too much fun writing my history notes.

MY KATE BURRIDGE SENSES ARE TINGLING.

EDIT: I think I have a serious problem. And that sounded stranger than intended.

P.S. Was Cumberbatch about pengwings and assimilation? ;D

- felt like lab #2 was a waste of time
- just had one boring lecture on making hypotheses (which we already covered 4 times over in the same unit ::) )
- is nearly tempted to fall asleep
- hopefully this next lecture is better :)
- The next lecture was better, but I was still sleepy
- Also the tutor for my 4pm class was close to forgetting my tute 😂
- Also I'm studying for another physiology quiz, so I'm going to be dead exhausted by the time I get to bed :o

Tuesday 21st

- Understood my electromagnetic engineering lecture until the last 10 minutes when the lecturer busted out some weird transformation shit - Gdi, so close.
- Went to an hour of my signals lecture, skipped the latter half to have lunch with the one and only jakesilove and some of the visiting AN crew from Melbourne
- Went to a lab with five questions and got 2 done. Better than the 1 I got done last week. Thank God we can work on these at leisure and submit at the end of semester.
- Rode a bus through a river in the torrential downpour

finished maths assignment  8). Still need to format everything correctly because you can drop marks for spelling and grammar LOL. Also checked answers with a friend and we were 0.02 out  :-[
Switched up note taking methods form word to typing on and around slides on onenote. Which I thought was personally better since I had a better chance to listen closely.

I actually love these three hour gaps. Gives me plenty of time to chill out in the library and get some work done and have some lunch before class starts. Probably a good thing I didn't end up going to UoM because I think I'd get way too distracted with everything around city. Being in the middle of nowhere forces you to get your work done. :P

- did a politics quiz, didn't do too well :-\
- finished writing my tutorial presentation on a Syrian conflict actor
- made a table comparing the different international security theories

29/3/17
- Had 3 back-to-back chem lectures (one from one unit, another from another unit and then back to the first unit)
- Had a tute (again, chemistry- so 4 hours in a row I had chem lolrip)
- Bailed from a study group which was straight after the tute because I was starved (and didn't eat breakfast- lesson learnt- I should eat breakfast ) and I had preplanned babysitting duties ::)
- Looked at my chem notes and decided to take a nap instead (I should mention that I did get back to them, after the nap, hahah)
- Finished up making a diagram and explaining it for an assignment

29th March
- Did an Electronics Quiz, seemed okay! Given the little time I had to prepare for it (my fault), definitely happy with how I answered the questions.
- Did an experiment on microwave antenna patterns with an old friend I hadn't worked with for about a year. Our demonstrator and my friend both work in (different parts of) the UNSW Quantum Computing Labs, so they hit it off like old chums. Our marking session turned into a massive banter session.
- Tutored, drove home, chicken schnitzel for dinner (highlight of the day, absolutely)
- God, does anyone watch My Kitchen Rules? I'm catching up on the episodes from earlier in the week. I know they want me to hate Josh, but jeez, he's obnoxious even for a reality TV show villain! ;)

Started the day off a bit unproductive but we got there in the end...

- Linguistics tute this morning
- Philosophy lecture
- Literature lecture
- Caught up on a history lecture- still need to do the other tomorrow because for whatever reason the video kept stuffing up tonight.
- Finished history assignment
- Halfway through my history readings- planning to do the rest tomorrow
- More than halfway through drafting my philosophy assignment

Also went to the study abroad/exchange expo today and talked to a couple of people about studying overseas. Really leaning towards the University of Exeter at the moment.

^How was the Expo, out of interest? Did you speak with the Monash people there?

It was good! I came back with a lot of brochures, haha. ;D

I spoke with someone from the Arts faculty about exchange opportunities and then I spoke with a couple of people from the University of Warwick and University of Exeter- those were the main two that caught my eye although there were a lot of others. They basically had representatives from universities all over the world- America, UK, Europe and Asian countries- and it was a good opportunity to speak with people actually from there, they can obviously offer a very insightful perspective.

Hey Coffee! Sorry (it's a little out of context) but I've been meaning to ask a Monash student this: how are the courses on literature at Monash in your experiences so far? I've been looking into it over the past few days, but I haven't had anyone's comment on how it's run yet. I'm just very curious, as I'm considering maybe doing literature or philosophy at uni. Thanks in advance!  ;D

Hey! I absolutely recommend philosophy. It's been one of my favourite units so far- even if it does frustrate me sometimes! :P

Literature is great too, the lecturers are really knowledgeable and go above and beyond. If you're doing VCE literature, the assessments are quite similar so I don't think you'll have a hard time adjusting. If you're not, I'd recommend speaking with your tutor about essay structure early on, because, at least in my case, there hasn't been any in-class support or lessons on essay structure- so you'll need to seek this out if you want to know.

You don't read one book per week but the pace is still much quicker than VCE, of course.

In regards to the actual course structure- you'll probably have one 1 hour lecture in person, one 1 hour online lecture, and one 1 hour tutorial.

I thought I always wanted to be an English major but personally I just haven't been enjoying this unit as much as I thought I would. Possibly because it's an introductory course and I would rather focus on specific points in literature. But I'm also just a little over it. What I'm doing is basically the same as last year and while I'm good at it and enjoy it when I really get stuck into writing an essay, the initial motivation isn't there- which is for some of my other subjects. Don't let this put you off though! It's a good course and I think a lot of people are enjoying it, it just hasn't worked out for me as I thought it might would.

Don't be afriad to have a read of the unit handbook on the Monash website either! You can take a read and see if its something that might interest you.

3rd of April:
- First weekday that i'm off + not doing anything. Have just come off my final placement so now it's full steam ahead for my final 7 or so weeks. It actually feels quite weird sitting here not having to prepare for a class or something. Back in the full swing of things from Wednesday at uni. Fun times (did you hint the sarcasm?)
- I have full confidence still (after four placements + 1 year into my masters) that i've made the right decision.

i'm so out of it at the moment that I had to check whether today was a weekday. *sigh*

An oral presentation (due tomorrow- just need to chuck in some graphics, nobody likes just text :p) and essay on epilepsy and the antiepileptic drug valproate, as well as a "philosophy of science" one where I have to make a scientific method and use it to derive meaning from some research from a MIPS (Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences) researcher. :)

I'm just glad I have nothing due next Wednesday. 8)
that'd make for a hectic 18th aha

Waheeeeyyy are you pumped for your 18th? Don't think that small text adequately hides comments hahaha.
Tbh I don't see the big fuss.

Just wanting this week to be over already (it is the 2nd most contact-hour heavy week I've had all sem haha)

It's coming down to the crunch over here. Month of April will be nasty. Lots of assessments, a few exams (not something I do at UTS...). Some of my courses are ending this month so all of the end-of-semester note-tidying (more hyphens, please?) has begun. They do terms within semesters here, so I'm in frantic study time for the month...

But I get to do a presentation (A HALF HOUR PRESENTATION - BY MYSELF) on anything about Chinese culture. I can do it on anything at all, as long as I identify a powerful class and an oppressed class. I think I'm going to do it on cultural appropriation of Chinese culture in Western Society, and how reverse-cultural appropriation doesn't really work, it's just a product of imperialism. Super preliminary thoughts, but I'm really excited to get researching. It's a masters subject, so I don't really have any clue what the standards of assessment are like but I'm feeling keen right now nonetheless.

In other news...my italian language teacher teaches entirely in Italian. Really. Difficult. Considering. I'm. A. Beginner. I'm working on prepositions at the moment and want to cry most the time but I spend about 10 hours a week outside of the class studying intensively for it, as well as just organic use of italian. So, fingers crossed...

Haha yeah, I don't really get the fuss, either. On my 18th, I... did absolutely nothing out of the ordinary lol.

Really interesting! What's the biggest difference between uni at the moment and uni at UTS, do you think? :)

Really interesting! What's the biggest difference between uni at the moment and uni at UTS, do you think? :)

A few things:

-This University works in terms within semesters.
-Everyone does a Bachelor here, and majority of students do a Masters as well. Your Bachelor graduation is quite small, but your Masters graduation is really huge. It's more or less expected you'll do a masters, no matter what your Bachelor is.
-There's two schools here, the Academic School and the International School. I do subjects from both.
-There's no minimum attendance required at all. There's absolutely no baby-ing, discipline, etc. If you don't want to be here you don't come, and you just show up for the exam. It's a really adult atmosphere.
-I do exams here, I don't do exams back home.
-We stop for coffee and cigarette breaks for ten minutes in every class.
-There's no lectures, you just have one class per week per subject (except I have two classes per week for language), and it's just a tutorial-like situation. No lecture or seminar and then a class. It's just a small class as your only subject interaction for the week.

- The 3 days of terror have ended, feeling so relieved that the next assessment is my only midsem, next Thursday :)
- 9:30-1 today, had a quiz, 2 lectures and a tute.
- I have to watch (and pay attention to ::) ) a couple of long videos on the cardiovascular system
- I actually can mostly chill tonight. So happy ahaha.

5/4/17

- Got to uni at 8am this morning and had to drive around the uni trying to find a ticketed parking spot. I usually park in the south east section of Monash, but had to adventure to the multi-level near engineering for the first time. That was an interesting experience. It puzzles me that a car park can be pretty much full at 8am.....
- Back at uni after nearly 4 weeks of not being there (due to placement). Nice to catch up with some people and discuss our experiences.
- It's nice to know that some things don't change - I am so over uni now. The workshops I had today were dull and boring.

m8 it gets so confusing. I've had so many disagreements about this hahaha. Like, if it's a Thursday, and you say "next Wednesday", which Wednesday are you referring to?

EDIT: Stuff it, I'm going to make a thread on this hahaha.

How's uni compared to school
much harder(not really content wise but keeping up to date with everything and having room to study) but also more enjoyable  :)

10/04/2017
Just gonna recap because I haven't posted here for a while.
-Had an MST for BMS1011 (biomedical chemistry) on Friday went pretty well although I think i dropped a mark.
-Got two more MST's on Wednesday and Thursday
-BMS1031 (medical biophysics) pracs are the worst so badly run although relatively easy to score on (given you have a nice TA)
-BMS1021 (Cells, tissues and Organisms) had a couple of online quizzes had to google a lot of the answers because a lot wasn't taught LOL (maybe purposefully so not everybody full marks)

Haven't updated in a while so...
- 2-4 today, but I spent most of this morning in the campus lib eating green tea filled cookies and understanding action potentials and the heart
- got one of my assessment results back and I'm super surprised with it. ;D
- bailed from a study sesh because I'm feeling tired and tomorrow is a big day, so I need all my energy.
- discovered that prerecordings/reading are more useful than active learning lectures

also haven't updated in a while but...

have literally been writing/researching my politics essay over the past few days. I don't know why it's taking me so long :( (jk, I do, it's cos I procrastinate too much, but I feel despite procrastination I am still slow xD).

I have done a little bit, but not much, of other stuff.

Been working my ass off the last few days:
- Got my team started on the OB (management subject) assignment early
- Finished off my part in the OB assignment but still need to brush up on citations and in text references
- Crammed for the economics midsems and, surprisingly, think I did well despite it being harder than I expected
- Applied for internships like crazy and nutted out the selection tests (there were like 10 or so...)
- Did an online interview for an interstate internship...awaiting outcome now

I probably didn't have to rush all of the above into the space of the last week, but I'm doing on a road trip for the entirety of the midsem break next week, so I think it was still necessary to do this.

12/4/17
- Received Linguistics assignment back, very happy with it - did not expect the mark at all. Minor errors that I've clarified and learnt from.
- Completed Korean reading test; good reaction from my tutor, and I'm feeling good about it too. Possibly a HD/perfect, fingers crossed!
- Education tutorial to end the day.

14 April
- break has gone too quickly
- it's taking me forever to write this essay, I still haven't finished researching even though I've finished my draft
- philosophy: re-read the reading that I will write the essay on, rewatched the lecture, made a very brief plan and did some research but now considering another topic ::)
- haven't caught up on readings yet for next term -_-

Despite this I like all my courses I'm taking :) It's just a lot of work, reading, researching, writing etc.

Happy Easter y'all :D

15th April (technically, I mean it's 12:30am)

- Had an exam on Thursday that I think I did quite well in, at the time hated that I didn't get the break to study. Now that I'm actually on break, best thing EVER
- Took today off from uni work to hang out with family, go to the gym, do some work for ATAR Notes, etc :)
- Made a to do list with my uni work for the break and realised I probably shouldn't have taken the day off ;)
- Realising that my timetable for next semester is going to be nowhere near as kind as the one for this semester which somehow gave me a three day week - Might even have all five days for the first time ever :P

Thankfully, but I hate breaks. I much prefer 3 days with no breaks like I've got now - Saves me doing 5 pairs of 2 hour trips in traffic to get to uni everyday :P

Obviously 20%, but how much more of a burden is it qualitatively?

You know, it's actually not too bad in itself.

It's dealing with life on top of it that makes it a struggle. I feel like overloading doesn't add on to the burden; it multiplies it. (So if you didn't have much of a burden to begin with, it's actually fine.)
Title: Re: University Journey Journal

I never overloaded or underloaded, so it's actually sort of difficult for me to conceptualise haha.

Interesting!

Here's the story to why I chose to overload.

My degree is a bit ****ed. They added in an extra course that every B Adv Sc and BSc (Adv Maths) student must do. For single degrees, this is okay, just that the course is very uninteresting.

For actuarial/maths, there's complications. This one little extra course means that I have to stay back for one extra semester just to do one course. Gross.

Plan B was summer term, but UNSW Business School likes to rip us off. They charge us the full $4000 for a course if we do it in summer. And the maths department don't offer any second year or above courses in summer either.

So I didn't really have much of a choice. With trimesters coming to UNSW things might change a bit, but I had no clue they were going into trimesters last year.

Yet, as masochistic as this sounds, I think I might be overloading again...

- 9-5 (but I finished at 3:30 because the 3 hour workshop took 1.5 hours to complete)
- had 4 back-to-back lectures (so brutal day)
- The 3 hour workshop was quite obscure and challenging, I was so glad that it finished early. ;D
- Discovered that I shouldn't sit near the table tennis table in the rec room, those matches are actually quite intense and I narrowly missed high-speed ping-pong balls hitting my head.
- Typed out 70% of my essay, which is due soon and I shouldn't of been up late to do it because rn I feel so drained, haha.
- Finished my prelab questions for tomorrow's lab.

I've got an exam tomorrow on the contemporary history of Venice - and I'm excited to study for this (will start shortly) because it's so interesting, but I'm bothered I need to study it within the bounds of what the exam wants because it's just so interesting.
Have two exams next week - Italian language and Italian culture.
It's getting to the crunch but the most difficult part is that I have no idea about what is expected in an Italian University exam. When I ask about marking criteria, or anything like that, they are so relaxed and say "just do your best" which is incredibly not helpful in any form. FUN. TIMES.

But, I drink lots of great Lavazza coffee from a vending machine at uni for 50c and its always delicious and always makes me happy.

How did your exam go? :)

Happy to report I feel super confident in it. Essay questions really went my way, there was 55 multiple choice questions and only about 3 was I completely unsure of. Results to be emailed any day now, they have a one-week exam turn over so very thankful for that turnover.

Not sure where else in the world this happens, although I'm fairly certain it's the same in the UK, but all subjects are marked out of 30, and a 31/30 is called an "A-star" which is like, above and beyond for the course. 30 seems like such a strange number. In saying this, my sister studies the IB instead of HSC and she gets a mark out of 7 for each subject at the end? :/

Hopefully don't have to do one next semester. ahaha
Still unsure about how well I'll go - which is uncomforting given usually the assessment we normally have is quite easy to judge how well you went.

- Started compiling a team case file for debating ( mainly a resource, training, topics and arguments bank for Australasians)
-Just finished work/adjudicating job ( it's surprising how work validates your self worth LOL, especially because I have to give out a lot more feedback forms this year)

Been a long time since I updated.

24/5/2017
- Since the last update, a tonne of assignments have been returned; overall satisfied with my marks so far.
- With the completion of my Korean speaking test today, no more assignments! excluding education placement documents and two final placement days... fun
- Basically time has opened up to catch up on a couple of readings/lectures I missed because of placements, and of course, exam revision.

24/5/17:
- I HAVE FINISHED CLASSES FOREVER
- First set of results are back, and all are up there in the D-HD range. So far so good.

Now I just have under 2 weeks to get 4 assignments done from scratch. And then it's JOB HUNTING TIME. Prospects aren't that great given it's mid year, but I've been asked to apply for 1 or 2 jobs so we'll see how this goes :)

It's been one hell of a week so far for me; and it's only Wednesday haha. I've had an assessment of some sort everyday this week and the next two days don't look fun either.
On the other hand, I've gotten a lot of stuff done early (such as a stats assignment and an a 'make-your-own-experiment' assignment), so I have had (mostly) more time to sleep, because I have since discovered that lack of sleep doesn't help me at all :P

Forget the date because I don't post daily  :P

- Finished up 1.5k essay on metabolism (8%) - surprisingly ok (so much easier than my lit review), good revision for the exam although keeping it under the word count was a pain. Ended up with nearly the max 1.65k  :o
-now revising for exams
-learning some week 11/12 content
-still need to receive a few more marks for in-semester stuff - hopefully they are decent  :D

past 4 days (basically exam prep):

- I've readskimmed through certain chapters in my IR + politics textbooks and tried to take some notes
- I typed up important sections of lecture notes all year, but idek if typing notes is a waste of time or actually useful
- watched a lot of philosophy lectures. so scared for this subject!
- I finalized my flashcards/glossary terms lists for politics/IR and printed them out

I think this is fine if its helping you to retain information. A lot of people learn by writing things over and over again. If this isn't how you learn though, best to move on to something else. :)

I'm the opposite. :P I'm most confident with philosophy, and terrified for lit.

Last few days have been quite busy, but I have time for lot's of breaks in between which is keeping me sane. :P

29/5:
- Mind maps on Borges' short stories
- Comparative analysis of sonnets
- Revised flashcards

30/5:
- Edit comparative analysis of sonnets
- Read over philosophy notes
- Read over poetry notes
- Revised flashcards

31/5:
- Philosophy practise exam
- Sonnet analysis
- Revised flashcards
- Two paragraph analysis on Mansfield's short stories

More essay writing planned for today, wish me luck. :)

- read over notes

Soooo, I just got back an essay assignment and I'm really, really happy. ;D It's by far the best one I've written to date.

Anywho, I have my last exam today (woo!), and I also woke up kind of early :(, so I've:
- Edited a practise exam I wrote yesterday
- Read over notes
- Revised flashcards
- Confirmed subject enrolment for semester 2

I'm at that point where I pretty much know everything I need to know, and there's not much else to do at this stage. I'm planning to read over my notes again a bit later, and go over my flashcards, but otherwise, I think it's going to be a pretty chill morning.

Good luck to everyone else with exams :)

I've had a bit of a love-hate relationship with it, I can't really say why, I think just because, what I really enjoyed about VCE Philosophy was reading actual texts from philosophers. Life, death, and morality is more an overview of various philosophical ideas and concepts, with only one prescribed text.

Also four weeks of Trolley drove me up the wall. ;D

Completely forgot to update, yes! Finished my final exam on the 15th. Feeling good about my first two, feeling so-so about my last one.

Also came to the decision to not continue Linguistics as a major or a minor after much deliberation (DON'T HURT ME). Will be moving on with Psychology/Korean studies (undecided major). The assignments were fairly easy, but when I found myself having to revise/study for Linguistics, I just felt like this was not for me. I definitely do still have an interest for Linguistics, just not at a deep uni level of study.

Any unit recommendations? I was thinking of picking up Time, self and mind in the flexible mode of study. I used the will.io timetable thing to check it against my other units if I were to take it on-campus, but it caused some issues. Any advice about how to approach flexible study would be good too!

Oh shit, really? Is it just vector calc you're struggling with, or partial derivatives and multiple integrals, too? Because the latter should work just like 1D calc, unless UNSW is teaching it weirdly. O.o

Well, hmm.

Partial derivatives is of course piece of cake, and so are double integrals. UNSW does teach it weirdly though.

Surprisingly I'm actually alright at elementary analysis. Fourier series isn't that much of a hassle either. What gets me:
- Triple integrals (I swear they're so much harder than double... mostly the cylindrical and spherical substitutions)
- Yeah, a whole ton of vector calculus
- Can't understand the implicit function theorem more often than not
- This one is more of a complaint but sometimes the equations with Lagrange multipliers are too nasty
- I know nothing about orthogonal curvilinear coordinates, nor Green's/Stokes'/Divergence theorem and when to apply them

Here's our course handout if you're interested

Are you all done now, Rui?

@babushka818 - good luck for your OSCE, we'll all be cheering you on! Big thing is, if you realise you make a mistake during the station, fix it up because (if it's like physio), they will take the final answer/words you give, and disregard what you have said initially if it was wrong (if that makes sense). If you realise after the station that you've made a mistake, don't beat yourself up - everyone in the course will make at least one mistake in their OSCE :) I found that my instincts kicked in for most of mine, and if I was struggling to gather my thoughts, I just took a small amount of time to calm myself down and think, and then proceeded. All the best!!! :D

- I tried to do the readings for next class and did 2 of them, but omg, ancient Greek texts are kinda hard to understand!
- looked over and revised a few notes

So at UNSW there's this glitch that allows you to see your WAM update the instant one mark is submitted updated, instead of wait for the email on 11 Jul (which shows all of our marks independently).

I'm like begging for at least one of my courses to get uploaded in to see how my WAM fluctuates. I completely messed up ACTL this sem so I need to see how low my WAM dropped as a result of it.

Sounds very similar to UniMelb. I never had that - I think I'm glad for it haha.

Good luck, Rui!

it's okay so far :) it's a 2nd year course so it is slightly more difficult but I still find it somewhat interesting
it's an intensive course so we've already finished 1/3 of the lectures already haha xD, and have an exam in 2 weeks :o

Hectic hahaha
Too much information, not enough time to process it.

Although not digging this massive 10% "active learning"/forced lecture attendance thing for one of my units haha

Today went better than expected (aside from minimal sleep) :D

New case study group seems great, and my prac group also seems really good :D
Looking forward to some new content. Been dreading going back but tbh, I think that's just the lazy part of me not wanting to do any work - if I think about it, I actually quite enjoy learning all the new stuff.

A bit stressed out about the major assignment for the semester, though. And the fact that I really need to get my organisation skills together haha

Edit: I forgot to mention that there was a petting zoo at uni today. But I didn't get to see any cute animals because I was in class all day :(

I'm so glad that there are no tutes/workshops this week (except one subject for me). Allows us to not get overloaded on the first week, and instead have no time from next week until the end of semester
So far, it seems like the regular physics is a massive improvement on the advanced physics from last semester. The lectures seem a bit slow (granted, I've only had one) but they don't seem to be overloading us with information
I found out a couple friends share similar timetables with me including a workshop and tute :)
Yesterday I got free lunch, a free hot chocolate, and free krispy kreme, I love freebies!
It's difficult to fit my tutoring around my timetable, I really want to have weekends and Fridays off from tutoring so I'm hoping it'll work out

Day 2 of semester:
I essentially had this experience from the IT crowd in a tute today, where we were "practicing mindfulness" (i.e. for me, lying down for the 10 minutes and trying my best not to fidget or laugh) and had to go around in a circle afterwards and say how meaningful the experience was for us :P

Sooooo jealous. It's just hectic from the get-go for me :(
Is this a thing that happens across all of unimelb, or is it just for particular units or courses? :)

Today:
- Sorted out my group for the first assignment of the semester- it is an interesting topic that we've chosen, but we're not happy that it is a presentation haha.
- Discovered that the parklands around uni are very peaceful and I found it quite relaxing
- I've already seen most of the lecturers pushing their specialisations; we have to choose ours soon :o

3 of my subjects have weekly assignments due (not the full-marks-if-you-try ones, actual assessable ones). Not looking forward to the never-ending work, and the larger assignments on top of it.

The standard is no tutes no workshops no pracs during the first week. Some subjects do, but a lot don't as you haven't really learned anything in the first day or two. This means I didn't have to go in today :D day off before the flood of work comes in.

At the moment, I'm looking at specialising into formulation science (which looks at drug delivery, disposition and dynamics), but I'll see how I go in the taster unit I have this semester, which gives me a look at all 3 that I have a choice of

(The other 2 specialisations are medicinal chemistry and drug discovery biology, in case anyone wants to know :) )

Sounds interesting, it's good they have a taster subject (wish they had something like that at school / before uni to decide your subjects). I'm the classic AN nerd, hoping to major in maths (also considering engineering) with some commerce/finance subjects on the side :)

I said I'd commit to attending every lecture this sem if possible but I went to bed really late last night and ended up staying home today, missing 3 lectures (and if this was next week, a tute)

I did watch 2.5 of them already so that's a start? luckily most 1st week lectures are pointless

I'm doing 4 subjects again (after doing 3 for the past 2 semesters), 2 of which have weekly pracs so that's making me a bit nervous and we haven't even started yet :s

also I have to get all H1s for the rest of my degree to fix my WAM and I still don't know how to study

*screams*

I feel you on this. I've got a weekly things due every Monday, Wednesday, and Sunday across 3 subjects. Although mine are just online quizzes, they're still there as persistent nags in the back of your head as you try to get major assignments in. Gives me a reason to really be on top of my work though.

this sem I've gone pretty lucky in that area, I have very few assignments, only essays and exams.

26th, July 2017:
- I had three tutorials and two lectures today and I'm honestly quite exhausted. Quite possibly just because all but one were back-to-back, I didn't know where many of my classes were to begin with, and because I was running late and ended up sitting in a different tutorial to the one I was allocated to 'make up' my attendance. Hectic day to say the least. :P
- Won a Freddo Frog in one of my tutorials which I just finished eating. :P It was yummy.
- Since I'm done for the week I'm going to plan out the next few days tonight so I can consolidate what I've learnt this week and prepare for next week.

Overall though, I've had a good day. :)

Aside from today being quite tiring, I had probably one of the most enjoyable/interesting/different lectures I've experienced at university so far :D

It was about group exercise - this semester we'll learn how to teach a group exercise class, and we were introduced to concepts like beat, cues, that sort of thing. Stuff to do with music is slightly daunting, but I'm excited to do something that's a bit different to what people usually expect a physio to do (but is becoming increasingly popular), and to learn about and experience something totally new :)
Title: Re: University Journey Journal

Today may have been exhausting for me, however I've had one of the most interesting lectures I've had in a long while. :P
It was about the pharmaceutical companies and how much $$$ they make, however I think most of us only soaked up the knowledge that to make one medicine, it costs around the same as 4 A380 planes- we literally googled the price of one A380 aha (US$375.3 million).

I've also started my first assignment for the semester. It's a group presentation worth 30% of one of my units, and right now, I'm feeling pretty scared because the assignment is basically making us find a new drug target to treat a disease, and we haven't really done much on the biological targets. The disease our group chose is psoriasis, and some of the pics I've seen of it looks fairly horrid, aha.

Coffee, your organisation is simply amazing. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: #goals <3
You seem to be enjoying the units that you're taking so far - do you think you'll like them more than the ones you did last semester? (Probably best to steer clear of mentioning Linguistics, though, to avoid breaking Joseph41's heart)

Tomorrow's gonna be the big day for doing uni stuff - catching up on notes, trying to complete some quizzes and stuff that are due early in the week, prep for prac and anatomy - but let's see how much of that I actually do :P

I am enjoying my units! I'm definitely enjoying Literature more this semester already. Last semester was very introductory, this semester has already been much more focused and interesting. The unit comprises of three modules this semester: Writing Melbourne, Walking the City, and the Transnational City. Definitely more interesting than your introductory stuff and I love that I can draw on some of my other interests, like history, and geography.

My other units are History, Philosophy, and Ancient Cultures. The former two I took last semester as well and I love them. Definitely some interesting topics coming up! Ancient Cultures is interesting so far, and a little bit different since I'm planning to head into the Modern European stream.

Kate, we don't speak of Linguistics *shiver*.

Going to start on my first assignment due next week, want to get ahead! I'll need to keep track of all my subject's weekly assignments, pre-tute work, pre-prac/workshop work, homework and content.

I plan to take notes for the next week and a bit's worth of lectures, and then complete my tute questions for one of my units by tomorrow's end. I've finalised the info I'm using for my part of the group presentation, I just need to write it up as a speech and put some info onto a slide, then I get the whole of next week to practice (hopefully!).

I find that people are actually really friendly, and are definitely willing to talk, even if you randomly ask someone how they are, when you sit down next to them in a lecture, workshop or tute. I'd also hang around any common rooms at uni, from experience it's well worth the wind-down time :)

That's what I've done for the past semester, and for my small cohort, it makes it easier for us to work as a group; as a fair portion of my semester is spent stuck in a group project or another. :)

I can't wait for a few days to rest, it's been hectic af recently, even though I've had a few wind-down breaks this week. :)

feels omg haha
nobody even seems willing to talk...
My first lecture at uni, I was sitting in a row, all to myself - smack bang in the middle. I had two hoodies on, both with the hoods over my head, earphones in, my arms crossed, my legs outstretched, sunk down in the chair, and with a fair scowl on my face as well.

I was literally trying my best to look like I didn't want to talk, and some fucking guy walks right up to me, stands there until I take my headphones out, sticks out his hand and says "Hi, I'm Nik!"

He turned out to be my best friend for a period of time, and dated my girlfriend's sister for nearly two years (I introduced them). I was willing to talk once he made the effort.

He was literally the only friend I made at uni - all credit goes to him haha.

Just try your best, don't worry if you get rejected.

If they don't talk back to you - they're too dumb to be friends with, so you dodged a bullet. And if they talk back - great. It's a win-win!!

Haha they all secretly want friends. Everyone in uni is lonely af but they're all too proud to admit it :P Just talk to them anyway. There isn't even a worst scenario because the worst scenario is that they don't respond and tbh that's a reflection on them, and you're just being friendly. So just cruise on and have confidence!  8)

thank you to everyone for your replies I appreciate them, sorry that i'm not directly replying to everyone but I'd be saying the same thing

I'm going to keep trying to interact with people in tutes but in my experience it's been harder in lectures

hmm really?
idk, I feel some people are just cliquey and stuff but yeah...

yes :( this is true. I've never experienced that so strongly at uni until this semester -- ALL of my tutes have cliques of people that all somehow know each other and I've never seen most of these people in my life lol
so it's a bit hard to infiltrate those kind of groups :/
I'm not looking for a social group because I think that's harder to get than just a few friends but what do you do when everyone is only keen on talking to their friends they already know? Understandable but it's so awkward for people on the outside

Do you know people from uni (even a little bit) at the moment? :)

not really, I used to because I actually made a few friends last year but those friendships cooled off when the semester ended and it would be extremely weird for me to contact them out of the blue now

Saying that though I did run into a friend from first semester of first year last semester and through her I got into contact with our mutual friend & they wanted to hang out etc but I had a lot of shit going on at the time and I couldn't so I probably looked like a snob BUT no that wasn't it, I suppose they'll never know that (we weren't close enough for me to explain)

I texted one of them (but it was like 6 weeks later oops) and I added her on snapchat when I saw her in my contacts but then as soon as she accepted me she posted on her story that she doesn't want to be friends with people who don't allocate her time or something? I know that could have been about anyone but since she didn't reply to my other message and she posted that I took it as being about me so I deleted her
and that was that

also ran into a friend from last year in a tute I wasn't meant to be in and we talked a bit but I got the vibe from her that she didn't want to hang out but it's ok I wasn't upset, I don't want to hang with me either TBH

I think it must have been easier to make friends in first year and I should have taken advantage of that because I didn't even make one friend last semester LOL

so tl;dr don't know anyone at the moment but I have one of my closest high school friends in one of my subjects (but not the same prac) so grateful for that, at least I see her in lectures

Just a reminder that you not wanting to hang with you (I completely understand that) doesn't mean others don't want to.  At risk of sounding like a CBT-wielding shrink, "getting a vibe" doesn't mean it's true - it's just a thought or feeling.  And feeling unworthy doesn't make you unworthy. <3 :)

Good thing about uni - there are plenty of people to choose from! Just keep saying hi to people, especially those that are alone or in small groups. Say hi, introduce yourself, ask what subjects they're doing how they're finding it etc. feel free to complain a bit about how much work X subject gives, people love complaining.
Try introducing yourself in smaller classes as they're more likely to share big classes with you. If they only give one word answers etc then try someone else next time, if they seem friendly / they don't mind the chat then see if you can find them next time.
It's especially good to talk to people you're in a group with for pracs assignments etc
With regards to clubs, try to join a smaller one as it'll be easier to find people especially people who also don't know anyone. Just show up to events and say hi. This works well with either very few people (one is best) or a big group as you can just fit in
Good luck :D
Ps I'm nowhere near a socialite but I have gotten to know people by just being brave and saying hi :)

Just read through this thread and realised I hadn't posted in here as much as I thought I had :P

End of week 2, and I've essentially achieved nothing this week due to being sick ::) Hoping this virus disappears over the weekend so I can finally get some energy back and get on top of things.
Time to start the semester's major assignment this weekend, and catch up on my notes for all the lectures I either didn't go to or didn't pay attention to. In terms of non-uni stuff, I'm hoping I'll get close to finishing the puzzle I've been doing for a month and am currently stuck on haha.

Next week we start studying the shoulder, which is super exciting.
Covering the spine in the last two weeks has been interesting, but it just doesn't particularly tickle my fancy. I'm looking forward to covering the upper limb over the rest of the semester. :)

4th August, 2017:

- Completed 50% of AT1 Draft #2 for Philosophy
- Researching for an upcoming Literature assignment. I'm feeling pretty excited about this one and I found some interesting secondary sources. Planning to head to the library at Monash on Monday and check out some things.
- Read some sources for upcoming History assignment.
- Read some more Literature readings.
- Crying because I have 5 assignments due this month. :'(

4th August 2017: I have Fridays off, but I still didn't get much done today

- did one of my readings for IR
- I did start my politics paper, but just some basic research...I still need to catch up on how I write this
- I also made some flashcards

Was planning on doing so much this weekend. Have achieved absolutely nothing.
Really need to start finding a balance of when to study vs when to rest - the result of being at uni 5 days a week means I'm so exhausted by the time the weekend comes, I spend both days doing nothing uni related and just trying to psych myself up for the coming week.
Saturday is meant to be my rest day, but I work most Saturdays, so I kinda feel ripped off, and want to do nothing on Sundays too haha.

Hard to find a balance.

On the weekend I aimed to prepare some assignments for this week and get a head start. I
- Finished writing up one assignment (had already done the solutions just needed to make it look nice)
- Forgot I had a physics assignment due yesterday (oops)
- Didn't do the prelabs (so I'm doing them today :-\ )
- Didn't look over last week's notes
- Didn't do my pre-tute questions for later this week
- Went to bed late

So the whole "being organised" thing isn't working as well as I'd hoped... :P

- did a bit more reading for IPE

So...unproductive lol.

Yep.

It's a surprisingly useful skill, and probably worth more than most of your course, but it doesn't need to cost a cent (except for the cost of the raisins, I grant, but ideally you can just steal them from parents anyway so)

Panicked because I thought I'd do more Uni work today than I actually did, working 10-6 today, and then dinner with a friend. And then it occurred to me: I already did tomorrow's readings on the weekend. So thanking previous-me for being so on top of it on Sunday morning because Wednesday me is very extremely thankful.

Just using this space to type some thoughts and debriefing

I'm doing one subject, Communicating Nations, which I'm loving. There are three assessments, one is class participation (how good!), one is an individually assessed group task which is just facilitating discussion for one hour about the readings (legendarrrrryyyy) and then one 2000 word essay at the end. So, really happy with this because the content is really interesting: how do we construct nations? What is an imagined community? etc... And really happy with this because this is the least demanding assessment schedule in this world.

Then I'm doing data journalism...stressful. I'm doing a lot of work with statistics, data, and... (duh duh duhhhhhhh), excel. I'm slowly getting my skills up I think, so I'm happy, but it is very very very time consuming to follow data through in a million ways, reformat, trim it, etc...to find there's no interesting story at the end. Starting again... (If anyone has come across any interesting data lately lemme know...)

And then I'm doing Sexing Power as an elective - a gender studies class. Really interesting. This week's readings were on Chinese foot binding and its similarities in deformation and metaphorical ways to 18th century corsets. That was my favourite reading. There was also one about "Saving" women in Islam, which I found a lot harder to understand because of the American spin on it, so much about America's involvement in the Middle East and I just don't know enough. And then one nice and short one on Western Feminist theory.

August 11:

Was so glad it wasn't freezing yesterday morning, hoping that will also be the case today :) Also, attend all my tutes, but watch certain lectures at home if I can (Eg MAST10009 are 4 days a week and you pretty much have to be there to see blackboard, but there's 1 ACTL10001 lecture on Wednesday where everything is recorded, so Wednesdays my 'day off' - which I mostly spend studying :P , but I find this is actually better as I can pause, try the question, then resume so I understand content and take on much more). Also, 1-1.5hr travel each way really takes a tole, so I think you kind of have to be flexible and figure out what works best for you, rather than attending EVERY class cause it's 'recommended'

I'm the same, I have a single lecture on Thursdays so it's my day off. Downside is I sometime forget to watch it (like yesterday) so I might watch it on the weekend and hope I can follow today's lecture
I've found a day off is very useful to me, last semester I didn't have any so on my weekend 1 day was spent doing physics and maths homework (physics homework was exceptionally difficult and took 3-10 hours, most people just gave up) and Sunday I had to travel 1h each way for a 4h meeting. So, basically no days off for me.
This time though I can get lots of my work done early so I'll have part of the weekend to either relax or get a head start on things :) makes it a lot less stressful

I expect it'll only really be a problem during first year. Usually you can choose your own groups (from my experience) so hopefully that'll be the same in future years. After first year though the main people taking it will be wanting to do well, and often the individual work is worth more than group work. Don't worry about it too much :)

I'm in week 4, and this time next week, 2 of my assessments will be over, and in 9 days from now - 3 over! 3 of 9, complete! Woohoooooo. This weekend is going to be hell on Earth :) :) :) :)

Also, I'm really enjoying reading the readings each week. I ALWAYS read them all. I can't help but think I have no right to be dissatisfied with a mark I get back if I didn't actively do everything the teacher "expected" in order to get the full marks. Y'know???? Can't complain about a pass when I didn't do what is essentially a course requirement lol.

Also, beginning to think about a masters? I'm doing two subjects this semester I'm loving:

Sexing Power, and Communicating Nations. Both are about cultural relativism, imagined communities, identities formed through histories, etc. Really thinking if I studied further, I'd love it to be on something like this. It's pretty cheap to do a Masters in Germany...

Thursday will the start of my chem labs for the semester, I'm sorta looking forward to making some deep heat (methyl salicylate), and Friday afternoon I get a lab tour (with free food afterwards- goals ), and I'm really excited for it, because it's a great way to finish this long week off! :)

-I almost forgot to do my pre-workshop work due 9am tomorrow. Glad I didn't, that would have been a disaster.
-I've been putting off my assignment that I really should write up tonight (why I forgot about the pre-workshop).
-Prac today was alright but they're always long and tough. 9am 3-hour pracs should be illegal. Predictions didn't match results so we had to figure out where we went wrong. We had to do and write up 3 pracs in around 2 hours :-/ and figure out where our logic went wrong and explain it.
-I went to a Women in Physics afternoon tea today :) It had delicious cakes and fruit and got to know some of my lecturers a bit and provide feedback on the course.
-I waited in line for over an hour to get free food from a BBQ- not worth it. Next time, I'm skipping the line and buying food :P
-Watched last week's episode of GoT and... Dany's OP.

On Thursday I'm going to try  and get ahead a bit so I can relax on the weekend :) never seem to have all my work completed :-/

- Direct pathway to med is attractive at monash plus the chance to start again and get a higher WAM then I currently have. Worried I won't have the wam to make the tranfer into biomed possible though.

do we get a new WAM only if we change unis or if we change courses as well??

My understanding is you have an independent WAM for each course.

I find myself getting more and more anxious each Sunday night about the week of uni ahead, and it's not pleasant.

Today was one of those days where it's just one unfortunate event after another. My group assessment was to facilitate a tutorial from 9-12, with four members. We agreed everything would be finalised on Saturday. I was the only one to submit everything on Saturday. Last night everyone said "Just finishing off now!" So I went to bed. I woke up at 7am, to a message saying a team member is ill and won't be coming in. I said how much it sucks but I hope they get better, and can they please send me their work for the tutorial so I can present it instead. He said he's been sick and hasn't done anything. As in, for the 5 weeks we've been at uni, nothing. Laughable. My tutor would understand, it just meant that things wouldn't quite be as smooth for the rest of us. I get to class, I reach into my handbag and my waterbottle has not just leaked, it has completely opened and spilled. I got a nice leather bag for my birthday so this is not absorbing anything - there is a POOL OF GREEN CORDIAL in my handbag. I pull my phone out - the screen is fuzzy and then turns off. It gets really hot and sits on the desk for a while turning on and off without me touching it :( Google tells me I will need a new iPhone (third this year!) but I'm committed to the rice remedy. But what is quite funny (in retrospect), is that I carry around a little personal alarm/siren where if I pull the chain, it sounds a loud siren (y'know, in case anyone attacks me). The water got into that and it triggered it, and I couldn't stop it! At all! It was SO loud and I couldn't do anything to stop it, so I had to leave my tutorial, take it to the toilet, and flush it! I'm devastated, sooo bad for the environment :( But nothing would stop it! My wifi dongle, wallet, remote on my car keys, and novel, are also all ruined. Tragic.

It goes on, dear friends, but let's just leave it there and imagine a very frazzled me banging on a personal alarm system trying to explain to my class why I even have it in the first place, and then walking down the university halls to the bathroom holding it to my stomach to try and mute the sound, before flushing it down the toilet.

The good news is that I got a distinction for the presentation, despite being underprepared thanks to my flakey team mate and very frazzled thanks to the disaster cordial. So things aren't awful, just very expensive ;) ;)

I hope you smiled at this story, because now several hours have passed, I think I can smile at it now too ;)

Oh no Elyse! What an unfortunate series of events :( Fingers crossed that the rice works!

When you clean your handbag (though you've probs already done this)- make sure you stick it out in the sun to dry! Way better than just sticking it in front of a fan or heater :) It'll prevent any bacteria or nasty stuff from hiding away in your bag and causing odors and the like.
Can't remember the cleaning tip for leather - a soapy sponge?

This is the exact reason why I take a backpack to uni, with a dedicated water bottle sleeve on the outside haha.

- finished my 2 politics readings
- answered half of my tute questions for IPE
- very briefly started researching my essay for IR, I borrowed a lot of books from the library!

I totally get that feeling all the time.

May as well contribute.

30th August 2017:
Had a mostly great day today.
- Had a chemistry mid-semester test which I studied mostly last night. Think I did alright, little shaky on it though because it's been rather neglected in favour of my research unit.  ::)
- Went to meet up with my supervisor who got me to revisit the binomial distribution, which I haven't done since Methods! (Might have done it in MTH1020/1030, but I forget.)
- Sat down to eat lunch and decided to check emails, as one does in modern day boredom... I got an interview for the paid internship I applied for! (Anyone ever done a video interview on a phone? My uni laptop has decided to malfunction.)
- Went early to my afternoon lab, as requested by my lab partners, and completed the video for our assessment task.
- Got to come home early which is rare.

6/9/17

Finished neuro practical quiz (7%) which is a huge chunk for an online quiz. It was relatively okay but always a few dodgy MCQs where there seems to be 2 answers.  :'(
Got two MSTs in the next week
MTH2010 (multivariable calculus) (20%) on friday
BMS1062 (molecular biology) (10%) next wednesday

MTH2010 hopefully isn't too bad, praying they don't put in any proofs I haven't seen before and molecluar is 18 lectures so RIP (inb4 someone says they have more) ,

btw I'll make a personal journal soon!

11th September 2017

Today is my day off; in fact, I have a whole week of days off because of my mid-semester break (which seems to be for BA students only, could be wrong though).

What did I do in terms of studying or assignments? Not an awful lot, really. I did start my short story assignment for my Writing Fiction unit, so that's something at least.

I'm glad to be doing a degree based on my interests. I love writing, and I have for a long time, so my units are fantastic for me. I'll write more of the story tomorrow, and see where my creativity takes me.

got H1 on both of the assessments I've submitted this semester :D pretty happy with that since I have no idea what's happening at uni most of the time and I've barely been in class
but I didn't ask for enough days in my special consideration application and handed another in 2 days late and therefore will lose 20%, oops :/ (although in this case it would only be 3 marks because it's out of 15) win some lose some?
missed my tute today because I wasn't feeling so good but I plan to attend another class, is that dodgy? I do that a lot these days

I think this is generally acceptable if you clear it with relevant tutors prior? I know sometimes there are capacity issues etc.

Congrats on the H1s! :D

you're right I should probably let both tutors know first

also should have added to my post:
if I've been provided with an extension for something but my special arrangements allow me to have more time (whether I receive the max time or not is at the discretion of the teaching staff) and I think I'm going to need that time, how do I ask for it? :S

I'd probably contact your tutors/lecturers, but as I'm guessing you're registered with UniMelb's equivalent of Disability Support Services, maybe contact the disability adviser as well? :)

At my uni, Swinburne, it's not too big of a deal. As long as you email your tutor, you'll be fine. In my experience, there were times I was late to lectures or couldn't go to tutes last semester. Shooting off an email usually did the trick. I find most teaching staff won't be fussed when you send them an email. It's better to do that, since you'll have been honest with them.

Was having a pretty crappy day today, then found out I got 90% on my macro assignment, despite taking a  completely different approach compared to the suggested solution for one of the bigger questions (got 2.5/3 for it) :) It's really not a big deal, but on days like those I think you've just got to celebrate the little wins

feeling a bit shit because I can't work out how to write H1 essays, or even an essay at all atm (I've been stuck on one for days, wrote barely anything have no idea what's going on -.-)

I suck at art. Barely passed assignment 1 for street art. Did assignment 2 the night before it was due using stock images from google, with the least amount of interest. Ended up getting 86. Most surprising thing all year. Grade distribution showed that very few people got H1, which was even more surprising...
Also, trying to juggle interning and uni is kinda stressful but fun at the same time. However, so far nothing seems to surpass sem 2 first year as the most difficult time in my life.

I wrote 3600 words on forests and bushfires and trees and shit in the last 48 hours. hooray for midsem intensives!!!

fun fact: bushfires are an important part of the life cycle of many of australias native plant species and without fire there would be no way for half of the plants to regenerate. for example, some of the trees have heat activated capsules filled with seeds and shit so after a fire the capsule opens and the seed drops into the soil and new trees come to life.  some of the mechanisms that the native tree species use to regenerate after a fire are ridiculous.
You know I thought it would be a boring subject, and when I tell people what we learn about everyone starts yawning but it was basically 1 week of fun facts about Australian forests which is probably the best way to keep someone interested in a subject that only lasts for 6 days of teaching.

Depends I think, I worry my work ethic will die down due to the course getting harder and other commitments like having a job.
But on the flipside, I may get better in future years since I know what the courses want.
I'll get back to you in a few years time to give you a definitive answer.

i'm not sure, i'm starting to think i chose the wrong course haha i'm not too sure tbh maybe lack of discipline, i'm definitely not perfect in terms of discipline, but i feel like its not that my course is hard or getting hard, might be i don't enjoy it and might seek a transfer... ahhh but i really the end job opportunities that my current degree gives ahhhh its like i like the final job, but the degree structure im not too happy with :/ might give it a semester or two

Date: 13th October

Today's events
- Ran in late to my lecture because the bus broke down; thankfully it broke down right outside uni
- Went to collect my first ever scientific poster in print (It was fabric!)
- Submitted said poster.
- Wrote a pitch for said poster.
- Went to chemistry tutorial
- Ran late to a meeting with my supervisor, because tutorial ran slightly late
- Went to poster conference and mingled, discussing my research project.

So close, yet so far! Just two more orals, a big report and three exams... then I'll be done with my undergrad degree!

At least that's better than nothing!

What is a poster conference?
Usually it's people presenting their research as posters over snacks and sometimes a drink (no such luck for us). Students ranging from undergrad to postdocs, researchers and an assortment of science-oriented people stop by to discuss the posters and what research they've been doing. I guess one way to imagine it is to think of an art exhibition opening, where people talk about science instead and are a lot more casual.

So exciting! When do you finish officially? :)
Last exam is on the 10th November. (I should probably stop procrastinating and go back to actually study for them!)

The one I was just working on - we just finished it - was on population genetics modelling.
As for other posters? Yes I did. Super interesting stuff!

(Side note: The recent Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded for, essentially, the sleep-wake cycle of flies, something my lecturer was discussing just weeks before it was announced.)

So true, getting start is the hardest part of procrastination for many people.
But congratulations for overcoming it now. Just remember you did for whenever you get scared of starting and eventually the fear will just be beaten like taking a breath.
Here is an AN article that could also help you beat procrastination as well .

Dealing with the guilt from getting next to no study done in a day is harder than I thought it would be haha

10th November 2017:
I think I may have just sat my last exam today. Ever.
Guess I find out in a little over three weeks whether that's really the case or not.

I actually forgot to post in a while. Well, it happened guys.
I finished my first year of uni back in October, no exams to do whatsoever. (Knew that writing degree was amazing!)

What a year, or I suppose a few months! Made quite a few friends and really enjoyed my units. Most of them, anyway. Had a news writing course that was pretty suckish come assignment time. It turns out not a lot of people will want to be interviewed by uni students, no matter how many emails get sent back and forth.

All said and done, I feel pretty accomplished. All those essays, short stories and news pieces, finished.
I am so happy for myself. I stayed with it; quite a few across all my classes dropped out midway through.

Bring on 2018!

I was planning out my degree again last night, since I made the decision to ditch the pure maths major for my degree.

It turns out I might barely enough room to squeeze in a chemistry unit.

Haha naw thanks. I'm afraid I have no tips or wise advice. When I wrote the first draft for the essay I got 96% on, it was completely different to my final draft. If I had submitted my first draft I think I might've passed but only barely. Usually to get myself into gear I write pretty much what I know about first and write an atrocious draft, but even then while knowing this I try my best to put it to passable standards. Then everything is just editing, which takes up most of my time. Sometimes, this means abandoning the first draft and writing a second draft.

But there are days where my vocabulary feels so small and narrow that everything I write looks extremely incompetent. I usually give myself a break in that time, but I'd still discuss the ideas with my friends who are usually articulate enough for me to remember ways I could express a particular theme/idea. I have a horrid memory, but speaking it out to someone helps strengthen that recall, which in writing I find gives me enough inspiration to keep myself motivated through the writing-assignment process as much as I hate it as the next person.

The calm before the storm.

I have a stress-free weekend coming up. And then the next three weeks will slaughter me with assignments and revision lectures.

Currently printing a shit ton of documents for all the upcoming six film shoots I'm involved in from the 26th til the 28th. There's so much paper work to do and it's so emotionally draining so I'm just giving myself a break right now.

They updated our marks for Screen Business and my average mark is 76, thus giving me a 'distinction' which is genuinely surprisingly because I despise this subject very much ahah.

The universe works in mysterious ways...

Last day of exams at UNSW. And I also happen to have an exam this same day.

Ugh... so keen to get it finally over and done with.

Well, looks like that happened yet again. Think that's been 4 semesters in a row now since I was also in that boat last year.

Exam for topology and differential geometry was an internal exam, so the staff managed it themselves. We were told what building to go to from an email.

So we did. And then suddenly a bunch of kiddos and some supervisors for this unknown program walk into our exam room as us bunch of young adults just sat outside waiting to be ushered into our exam room, like what. But not too late enough my lecturer shows up. Wonder what happened for that room to look like it had been double booked for primary school children needs and our examination needs. Heck, we were even beginning to say that these guys must be geniuses at topology and diff geo.

Then they get kicked out, so we got our "exam room" back. But because the tables got moved around into those grouped-table structures that primary schools typically use, we had to re-setup OUR OWN "exam room" (i.e. classical exam room setup with tables split up) for our exam. So whilst in wtf mode we did it, and then after we were done we realised that we had way too many students so two people had to sit on one table. For a midsem, sure, but this stuff agitates the staff for final exams.

And rip, my lecturer had to remain on phone call with our administration officer on what to do. We sat there for a while just being like lol when will our exam start. And then boom, our exam had to be moved from upper campus back to low-middle campus area (a walk from Matthews theatre to the Red Centre theatre tucked away in a corner)!

Hence why I started putting "exam room" in quotation marks. So much for that being our alleged EXAM ROOM.

First world problems. Exclaimed me as we walked back down. (At least I got a few laughs from some people, including the lecturer.) By then i was really feeling the mood of "fuck it I'm gonna get a sandwich". (Although I decided to make use of this time by going to the bathroom before the exam began.)

And just to add the icing on the cake, our administration officer was there at the start of the exam to make sure the rest had to keep going smoothly. I also later found out after the exam that she was initially supervising like 1 student (a friend of mine, presumably extra learning support required by keeping them isolated from us) that she was "on a phone call with my lecturer for ages". At the time I had only guessed who my lecturer was calling, but he practically confirmed it lol.

And then I proceeded to get destroyed by that exam anyway, despite the lecturer giving us +15mins bonus time. But wow, what an experience.

Lol that's shocking Rui, incredibly disorganised there. All my exams always start late due to them never giving the papers out until everyone's sat down and the rules have been read, but at least it's standardised so you know what you're getting.

I find it more hilarious than confronting tbh. 10/10 once in a life time experience. I mostly blame the fact that some exams are internally done because of reasonably small candidatures.

Although I'll get agitated if it happens in the future a second time

Highlight of my lecture today has to be when the lecturer had funny slide transitions and I couldn't stop giggling and he stops the lecture for a second and says 'I can see that you are very amused by my lecture slides Beatrice'

Feel like this warrants a post - I finished the campus-based part of my degree today (minus exams)! Bring on placement 8)

Lecturer pointed out that for many of us this is the last lecture of our degree (which for me it is) and my verbatim response was "oh no that's scary hadn't thought about that"

Now that we're going through practice problems the top thing in the chat being "oh no that's scary hadn't thought about that" is a little misleading

Doesn't warrant a post in my actual journal (which really needs updating when I get the time!) but what do you do when you think you're going to fail an assignment? And does it matter if you do? (Esp. if you only fail that assignment but not the whole unit... I hope, anyhow....) It's due in less than three hours and I've still got around a third to do and it's worth 35% (kids, don't copy me).

Pro tip: if you have an assignment that's typed and you've got very little time for it, autocomplete is your friend.
