Title: How did you go??
Post by: brenden on December 12, 2016, 07:04:19 am
ATAR NOTES PEOPLE, how did you go?? I can already see some really exciting results from people on Facebook... are you happy? disappointed? underwhelmed? Let us know :D

Some weird moderation went on in physics, I ended up with a B+ in GA1, where I didn't drop a mark. That's the only result I'm really not happy with

 ;D
Made a 46 for Biology. Probably could have done better if I did more for my U3 sacs, but what can ya do. Happy with what I got.
39 for Extended Investigation. No clue what happened there, I was kinda expecting to get low or below 30 for it.  :P

I'm a year 11 so I only did one subject, business management and I got a 43, pretty happy with that but I could have done better.

Does anyone know when the examination reports get published?

Was really, truly expecting a 90+ ATAR with my top-cohort marks... but got an 87.85
Only one score above 40, a straight 40 in History Revolutions

Might as well post.

39 raw Bio (40 scaled??), 34 raw Physics (36? 37?).

I mean, I haven't had an easy year. Health issue all year, pneumonia during exams, homeless all of semester 2. But even then, I thought I'd persevere and do okay.

At least I've got 2017, but man, I'm so utterly crushed

I'm shocked!! Got 93.15 - expecting much MUCH lower! Only one 40+ - 45 for further. Got a 37 in methods, 36 in chem, 35 in english and 25 for economics. Surprised I did better in methods than chemistry considering I left out 2 pages in methods and did all of chem! Either way I'm shocked but so happy!!

Honestly really shocked! I'm a year 11 and for business management I got:
GA1: A+ (90)
GA2; A+ (90)
EXAM: A+
Study Score: 46

Honestly thought that my semester 1 and 2 results would be As; was expecting a 38 or above, my teacher estimated a 40-44; gobsmacked how my exam went. Truly blessed x

My 44 in methods went to 47.88 and my 39 I'm spesh scaled to 49.55, so 43 would scale well over 50. Also I know your aims are probably a lot higher than mine were, but if they're your results you should be so happy, they're amazing, specially a 43 raw in specialist :)

Awwww man, sucks you didn't reach your goals! But those are some pretty good scores - I reckon you've still got a fighting chance for any course!

Not too sure about scaling, but the spec should hit near or on 50 (maybe over?), and the methods is probably 48-49?

This whole year I thought the best I could do was somewhere in the 80s, high 80s if I was lucky. Night before results were released I told a friend I expected a 78.

Lord behold I have joined the 90+ ATAR club.  ;)

Only got a 40+ in one subject which was HHD, with a very surprising result of 45, given that I thought I completely trashed the exam. I'm very proud of myself!

I honestly think VCAA was trolling me with the study score I got in Bio.

I liked the content of Bio but I didn't really like the subject. All those SACs were driving me crazy. I was posting the lowest scores of any of my subjects in regards to SACs in Bio. The only time I got an A+ was on the Poster and the Inheritance SAC. My practice exams had low percentages and I had basically accepted that Bio was going to be my 10%. I went into the exam trying to run away from a SS lower than 35 and get maybe a 38/39. I somehow ended up getting a 42, so I'm ecstatic

I'm in year 11 and got 36 for Business. Felt bad at the start. I really thought i was gonna get 40+ and it was definetly doable cause i was doing really well for my practise exams where my teacher marked it. And thought i smashed the exams. But than again. I'm fine. Guess i just naturally look at the good things. Other things i can be good at and am passionate at. For me it was bjj (martial arts).
I think i went wrong with finishing way to early cause i thought the exa, cended 30min earlier and a part of the question wrong.

I was so nervous last night - I literally was preying to the VCAA Gods that I would get over 40.
I thought I stuffed the exam short answer q.s. up and was starting to stress about how much work I would have to put in next year to make up for a bad score. Logged in to the site and was very pleasantly surprised. I guess it just goes to show that you can be very hypercritical.

Good job Bio Kids :)

Don't usually post much but in August I had serious fears about not getting a 25 in Lit. My SAC rank was quite low, my teacher had just given my latest practice essay 6/20, and I was not improving at all. I spent almost all of my exam prep working on Lit, and when I logged on yesterday morning, I saw I had A+, A, A+, for a 42!!!!!! I still can't process this; and I thought I would post here to try and avoid bragging or rubbing it in to anyone else in my class ahaha. I guess it just shows that hard work does pay off, and it can work for anyone!!  :D :D :D

Raw

You get your scaled score at the end of year 12. Though using the 2016 scaling report - http://www.vtac.edu.au/files/pdf/scaling_report_16.pdf - you can sorta guess what your score scales to.

Biology - 37 raw (38 scaled?)
SO HAPPY! I was expecting MUCH lower, somewhere from 30-35 raw. All those practice exams really paid off!!

HHD - 36 raw (32/33 scaled?)
SO annoyed for this one, thought I would do much better. Felt really good about the exam but I got a B+ which was what let me down. Didn't prepare for it as much as bio though :/

But overall pretty happy.

It's also worth saying about scaled scores that they're fairly predictable in large subjects. Some of the really small cohort subjects, like the LOTEs flail around everywhere; however, you can be fairly confident that the scaling for biology, or HHD, or any of the maths, any of the Englishes, the science subjects (incl psych) etc etc won't change scaling.
If they do they only tend to shift a point, as I think physics has done the last few years :)

(For year 11's) Are you sure the raw scores from this year get scaled to 2016's cohort? I read on Facebook reports of people getting a lower scaled score for their Year 11 2015 3/4's than expected as the scaled score was recalculated for 2016 (apparently this is the first year they've done this). If this is true, this change makes no sense.

Facebook isn't always the most credible place for information.

Midyear, I was forced into meeting up with my school careers lady and she pulled up my VTAC profile and she checked my scores for the 3/4's I'd already done and on the system, it said exactly what my scores scaled to? (They can't have like predetermined scaling for this year's cohort before people had sat their exam, right?). -- My two cents

Only way to find out your GAT is to get it in the mail. It should come eventually, depending on where you live and the level of mail traffic. The only way you won't get it in the mail is if your details are wrong in VCAA's records, which is unlikely if you've received other stuff from them.

I was happy when I received it but now I'm not sure how I feel about it :/ looking at the herald sun is making me feel shit because I can see the names of people from my school and ugh. plus, my friend keeps telling me who got 40+ when I dont really care to know right now. Idk. I know I could've done better because I completed 40+ practice papers so I feel disheartened. can someone please make me feel better because I feel so overwhelmed right now

I was happy when I received it but now I'm not sure how I feel about it :/ looking at the herald sun is making me feel shit because I can see the names of people from my school and ugh. plus, my friend keeps telling me who got 40+ when I dont really care to know right now. Idk. I know I could've done better because I completed 40+ practice papers but yeah :(

Yea man don't compare yourself to others, it really hurts your morale. Trust me even people with atars in the 99's can sometimes feel this way. Just worry about what's ahead - you still have another year to go (5 subjects I presume). Worry about your personal goals, not those of others and stop reading the herald sun lol.

Don't beat yourself up about it! The majority of your Bio SS comes from how you perform in one exam on one day. 36 is a score you can be proud of, and it gives you a strong base for the rest of your VCE :) You still have 5 subjects to go.
But that doesn't mean you're not allowed to feel disappointed as well. You can use this as motivation to do really well next year! Importantly, use it as a learning curve :)
In the end, VCE is for you. It's for you to do to the best that you can do , not the best that others can do (really hope that makes sense). Whilst you are, in the end, "competing" against others, it doesn't help to compare yourself to anyone else. Just aim to do the best you can do.

i only got 35 for my 3/4 in year 11 when i was aiming for a 45. it sucks but there is nothing you can do now for bio. use the high scores you heard other people getting as motivation to work hard in year 12 to get 40+s for your subjects. bio will end up as your bottom 2 so the difference between a 40+ and 37 is only 1 aggregate point, which might be only 0.05 diff in atar

I was in a fairly similar position in year 11. I ended up with a 37 in psych (which scales down to 36). This was still a score to be proud of, and the highest at my school, but nonetheless I was disappointed because the effort I put in and how well I'd done during the year both pointed to doing better.

At the end of the day, I had to rationalise it. It was a score to be proud of and I was definitely on the right track. Having done a subject early also gave me an opportunity to learn about how to tackle year 12. So rather than devoting my energy to what other people I knew got, or to feeling disappointed, I let myself be proud and used my energy to reinvigorate myself for year 12, ready to go on and use what I had learned from my experience with psych.

Despite the fact that psych was what I was most interested in (hence doing it early), all of my scores except for methods beat it. In hindsight this was probably one of the best things I did for myself in year 12 :)

You should never really base something of one person's experience though; however, a lot of students I've worked with have tended to do the same thing. That is, they feel they've not done as well as they could have in year 11 and then smash year 12.

PS: 36 is a great score though and if you got that on everything you'd be well into the 90s ATAR-wise :)

thanks so much K888 and Individu ! definitely makes me feel a bit better :) It has made me more motivated to do better in year 12 because now I know what I'm capable of and what works and what doesnt work for me in terms of studying.  also, I'm glad that even though I got a score in the 30's, at least I got high 30's which I agree, is a strong base for me next year- wishing you both the best :)

I feel so weird now. It's been a few days since results and I'm really happy with mine, but I'm such a perfectionist. I'm really disappointed that Melb didn't offer me an access scholarship, but excited about my score and the course - confused 101.

In all honesty, your 'friend' doesn't really sound like a friend as she/he is really showing a lack of empathy in this situation. In the long scheme of things, you will become more effective at studying a 3/4 subject after the experience of this year and i'm sure you'll do better the following year :D

yeah i agree :/ but she's the type of person to brag about her marks so makes sense that she tried to make me feel bad (she doesn't know that I got the same ss as her lol). and yeah, I know how vce works now so I won't be going into year 12 blindsided :)

Not to barge in and assume what you're friend is like, but it may be that your friend just doesn't know about how you're feeling. I wouldn't call it a lack of empathy (because that's a bit harsh). But perhaps, yes she's being a little inconsiderate, but only innocently from what I'm hearing. If you want your friend to know how you're feeling, I'd make it known that while it's exciting so-and-so is getting 44 SS, you'd like it if she didn't mention it because it makes you feel bad and that perhaps the timing is a little off to be celebrating someone else's achievements.

But yes, motivated99, you can do it! I'd quickly come up with a study plan and revise what worked and what didn't. Be proactive and do the best you can! Disappointment is only a part of a long learning process - the reality is, not all of us can get a 40+. To me, disappointment isn't such a bad thing - it's a reminder that things are going as they should. You've identified that you could do better, which means that the only thing left for you to do next is to execute, and to resist the temptation to withdraw into self-hatred and doubt.

Disappointment isn't a sign that things have gone wrong. Failures and anxieties over an uncertain future - they're all part of everyone's biography, so you needn't feel so alone about it. It's a sign that you can assess your own situation independently and that you are quite aware of your own failings, your doubts and fears, which is in itself something to be treasured, because it helps us understand the suffering and pain we might encounter along the way beyond VCE.

Keep your head up, and you'll do wonderfully :)

yeah I agree, the timing is definitely off and it's obvious too. if she knows I didn't get 40+, she should be telling me that our other friend got 43 for bio because that's just putting me down you know. and omg when I said that my parents were happy with my ss, she literally said "oh what really?" like she was really surprised and that just made me overthink whether getting below 40 means I didn't do well which is ridiculous because it doesn't matter what she thinks but when results were only released 2 days ago, it's easy for your mind to change which sucks.

and wow thank you so much for your kind words !! really made me change my perspective on being disappointed with my result. what you said is totally true and is making me feel better about this situation. all the best

Can't believe it! I am so proud of myself!

2016: English [50]  |  Methods [49]  |  Spesh [48]  |  Chem [50] |  Latin [48]
ATAR: 99.95

Genius confirmed
How?

Ive always wondered tho what happens if people select to have their results private? Do the results get published somewhere but the person remains anonymous?

If you look here http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Documents/high40plus/2016/Studies40plus2016.pdf it says how many people chose to not publish their results for a given study score (in each subject).

OMG motivated99, I feel the exact same way! I'm in year 11 & got raw 37 for biology, and guess what I was aiming for at the start of the year? Raw 44!
And then the herald sun comes out - my friend who did THREE 3/4 subjects in year 11 this year, gets 40+ in all her subjects, and DUX of two of them!! And I was feeling good about my score until then. I guess all we can do is move forward and work really hard to do well next year!
Just know that you're not the only one who's feeling this way!
Side note - I probably should NOT have read the herald sun, it's not doing much to help me :/

Your year 11 mark for a 3/4 isn't the be all and end all. Sometimes the subject is one that you're not as strong in, or you underestimated the competitiveness. The bell curve doesn't help either, with only 8-9% getting 40+, making marks seem less impressive than they are. Also, sometimes it's good to not do too well in year 11- doing too well can make you underestimate the work you need to put in the next year and overall not do as well.
In year 11 I got 37 in Biology, I was hoping for a 40+ as were my parents, but I used it to give me motivation to work harder and not underestimate the difficulty of vce, and got 97.9 this year, with 42 in methods, chemistry and physics, and 38 in spesh (raw for all, and had a tough lit exam)
Just use it to work harder!  :)
Tldr: be proud of your score and use it as motivation :P

No worries  ;)
Also keep in mind you often only hear the good results. Keep your marks in perspective and be proud of your results! Hearing about all the 99+ ATARs and the 40+ study scores may be demoralising but keep in mind 99% of people don't get an ATAR over 99 and 91% get below 40 SS. And 37 in biology is still top 17.7% of everyone doing that subject ;)
And ATARs / scores are important, but so are other things, and if you don't get the ATAR to get into your dream course there's often another pathway eg transferring into it
Work hard and good luck! :) :)
