99-100/100 across both exams is usually needed

what is your sac ranking and cohort strength?

80s in biology is definitely not always a bad score. Sometimes these are great scores given how hard some sacs can be. There are plenty of people who had biology sacs in the 80s and still got 45+ scores, however, they all ranked highly.

I don't know what my SAC ranking is in my school but I know I'm definitely not at the bottom but I'm not at the top. I'm potentially in the top 15-20 people out of three classes? I'm not too sure. Its a rather stronger cohort this year compared to last.

In Methods my teacher said I can get a 25 but 30 would be pushing it. I got 36% on the unit 3 Methods sac worth 22% of our study score. The average was 52% in a cohort of maybe 150? The sacs will scale up I’m pretty sure?

Is he correct in saying I’m barred from getting a 30? He said this while looking at another student from last years data who got a similar score on a less heavily weighted sac then on the next two sacs got 60%. In the Exam they got B and B+ but only ended up with 29. So is it truly impossible to get 30-35 what score would be needed?

I think getting 30-35 is definitely not impossible. Back when I did methods (2016), I remember someone in my cohort failed in part of the first SAC (<40%), but they got 37 in the end. Part of SAC scaling also depends on cohort strength, so since I went to a select entry school, our SACs would have definitely scaled up. Looking at the 2019 grade distribution, a B/B+ is equivalent to a score of around high 50s to low 60s in the exam, so if you can achieve higher than this, a 30-35 ss is possible.

My tip is not get too bogged down by your teacher's comment that getting a 30 would be 'pushing it', but rather focus on what your strengths and weaknesses in methods are. Since you got 36% on your first SAC, what areas did you not understand? By identifying these, trying to understand your shortcomings, and further testing your knowledge through more practice questions would be a good way to go next. I believe these are really good starting approaches to set you on track for a 30-35, and even higher.

Bear in mind that teachers do tend to make conservative estimates, and there have been many cases where people's actual study scores have been significantly higher than their teacher's predictions. So my advice to you is to make sure you understand as much Unit 4 content as possible to push that SAC ranking up. And if you still can't grasp a certain concept, don't be afraid to ask your teacher/post on ATARnotes, we're always here to help!

My friend’s teacher said she wouldn’t get above 25 for accounting. She ended up getting 41. And this is for a subject where sacs contribute more to the study score than it does for methods. You’ve definitely still got a chance.

English: In an average to strong cohort my average for unit 3 is 85%, in which I topmarked two of the three SACs (the analysis SAC I got 31/40 where top mark was 35/40, and I got somewhere between the third mark and the sixth, I guess). Our cohort has 19 students and at least the top band is reasonably competitive. If I got an average of 75% for unit 4 and maybe 75% for the exam, approx. study score?

I am new here and Sorry if there are any errors.

I am freaking out and very curious to know what my scores will be. I am in a reasonably strong cohort whose biology and chemistry sacs will scale up. Can you please help me with predicting my score.

Biology:
Unit 3 average is 86%
Rank : 11/80
Guessing unit 4 average will be 80%
Can you please tell me what marks I need in end of year exam to achieve 45 and to achieve 50
Please note my school sacs are harder than vcaa and the sac marking is strict

Chemistry:
I am really worried about chemistry. I work so hard on this subject,  when sac is done, i feel i have done well and in the end i do not see the mark that I expected.  Honestly i do not know what mistake I am doing.

My unit3 is average is 64%
Rank: 75/180
Unit4: honestly i am having enough of guessing on this one. As i never got expected mark in unit3 sac. My teacher was telling me that they deliberately mark very strict so that they could space out everyone in cohort
I am hoping to do well in end of year exam though.

Can you please tell me if there are any chances of me getting 40+ in this subject. If not what score should i predict for this subject. Also what score do i need in the end of year exam to get 40.

Appreciate any help.

Thank you in the advance

For biology, to achieve 45-50 with your SAC ranking, I believe it's good to aim for 110+/120 in the exam (looking at the 2019 grade distribution). I did biology in 2017, and in terms of SAC ranking, I think I was around the same as you. I thought I lost around 10 marks in the final exam (A+ cutoff for both 2017 and 2019 was the same), and surprisingly ended up with a 50 (Idk my actual exam mark bc I didn't order a statement of results). So it is definitely possible to achieve a 45-50 as long as you can smash the exam.

To get a 40+ in chemistry, I think it's good to aim for a 102+/120, given that your SAC ranking is in the middle. Looking at last year's grade distribution, this exam mark would give you a solid A+ (A+ cutoff for exam was around 75%), so your SAC marks should get decently scaled.

You mentioned that you don't know the mistakes you are making, so I was wondering is it because your school doesn't hand back the SACs that you did? IMO, a good starting point to identify areas you need to work on is to actually look at the areas and types of questions you lose marks in these SACs. Or if your school doesn't let you look at your SACs, look at the types of topics/questions you tend to misunderstand in practice exams (VCAA past papers are excellent, they are better indicators than SACs) or answer incorrectly. Whilst it is excellent to see that you work hard in chemistry, working smart is equally as important.

Well, because no one knows the difficulty or strength of your cohort, I don't think anyone can give an accurate prediction. That is, generally, a VCAA A+ is around a 8/10, and a VCAA A is around a 7/10 - so according to VCAA, your 75% would be an A, but you've indicated its a C+?? If you did end up with 3 A's we'd be looking around the mid-high 30's or even low 40's depending on how your SACs scale.

Well generally, if you're highly ranked, you basically determine your own study score i.e. how your sacs scale will solely depend on how you perform on the exam. If you're consistently around the high 80 to low 90s, you're looking at low-mid 40s. But if your SACs scale really well i.e. you do well on the exam, then you're looking at high 40s.

Cheers! Sorry about the 75% = C+ thing (that's what the letter grade is for that % at my school!)
