Assessment mark

Quick question about moderation. I've read that assessment mark gets moderated up or down based on the performance of the school in the final exam. Say if you're 5/50 for a subject but you personally ace the final exam, does that still mean that your assessment mark will be the 5th highest from the school or is it possible to have a higher mark? In other words, as 5/50, is the maximum assessment mark going to be 96 for you in that subject? Or is a 97 or higher possible?

Hey! So as 5th, your exam mark will be averaged with something ‘similar’ to the 5th highest mark in the room, including ties. So if you get 98, the highest mark, and the four people below that get 96, your mark will be similar to the average of 96 and 98. So, 97 in this case. Theoretically, there is no maximum mark!

Thanks Jamon! Based off that, say even a rank of 30/50 in a course like EngAdv (which is a situation more applicable to me), would acing the final exam mean a good possibility of a band 5?

Yep! It comes down to the performance of the cohort - The lower your rank, the more you rely on them to perform.

But yeah, like, say the average exam mark for your cohort was 75 (reasonable), and you got 90, then you'd probably be getting a Band 5!! If the cohort did really well then you get pushed up, you are in the middle of the pack so it is in your best interests to be helping your peers and pushing everyone up ;D
