Its based off a question from the 2015 Further maths exam that supposedly screwed everyone over lmao
theres even an article on it:
http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/vce-maths-problem-can-you-solve-the-50-cent-question-20151102-gkopm8.html
Oh, I remember the 50 cent question, it showed up in the newspaper, and it was a multiple choice question

I hope you understand this is a shoutouts/appreciation thread... not one for discussing a VCAA exam question, right?

Please keep on topic and find the right thread to discuss :) I will be deleting posts that do not fit the thread's purpose in future.

A huge shout-out to evandowsett, whose 23 posts (so far) are ALL super valuable - either excellent guides (like this, this and this) or answering questions about Methods.  It's just *so* in line with ATARNotes' spirit of generously delivering value because... you can!

Thanks Evan!

Just gotta give a shout out to sudodds who has been just so amazingly helpful around the HSC English and History forums as of late! Really, sudodds should be a meme - "Could you elaborate?" Writes an essay.

Could you please elaborate?

Well, it's really important (IMO) to view concepts like this dialectically, in particular through the lens of hegelian maoism, and it's core tennent the interpenetration of opposites.

Now the theory of the interpenetration of opposites essentially means that what makes a situation or thing successful or demonstrates it's success, ultimately results in its failure. For example, when analysing slave owning societies (the social stage after primitive communism and preceding feudalism), the growing number of slaves and slave owners (and how many slaves said slave owners owned) was a signifier of progress and the success of the slave trade/system. However as the amount of slaves increase, so does the economic instability of the system. For example, lets say a slave owner owned 100 slaves. As a slave owner he has to house, feed and cloth 100 slaves. In the end it's just cheaper to pay them and let them figure out the rest. Therefore, the interpenetration of opposites has a occured, slave owning societies fail and there is a transition to the new system, feudalism.

This theory (and marxist dialectical materialist thought in general) can also be applied to the situation of giving thanks, or acknowledging that someone has acknowledged you for your labour. In this situation, Jamon acknowledged my work in the HSC History and English threads, and I acknowledged his acknowledgement of that. Through this situation, it is evident that Jamon understands that under a capitalist system, the quality of my labour decreases at it increases. Confusing right? Basically what I mean is that as I answer more questions in these threads, activity on these threads will increase as students realise they can get their questions answered - thus the thread is successful. However, as the success of these threads increase, so does the work load, which may mean that I (and similiarly other question answerers - unless they're Jamon #1000+inlittleover3months) am rendered unable to answer all of said questions in a similar capacity. In an attempt to prevent this situation, and the interpenetration of opposites, Jamon aims to provide an incentive for me to continue supplying my labour by acknowledging it, and making me feel all warm, fuzzy and appreciated   ;D

So TL;DR
Thank you Jamon :) Considering how much I actually really enjoy answering history questions (nerd alert), you don't need to worry about any marxist dialectical opposites interpenetrating anytime soon!
