LOL obviously Rooney moving to Australia to play in the A-League would be unlikely to say the least.

One year publicity stunt so that he can boost his goals scored tally.

LOL that would be funny! =P Rooney's goal to game ratio would be pretty damn high.

My guess is that Rooney's decision is driven by (a) a desire to get himself and his family away from the recent tabloid-driven pressure in England, and (b) the common desire of a player to test the greener pastures on the other side of the fence. After the recent tabloid feeding frenzy, the idea of playing in Spain must sound awfully appealing to Rooney right now.

with transfer window closed for quite a marginal period i think man utd will be able to sort rooney's contract out before it reopens. It would be dog as if rooney buys out his contract for $5 mill pounds meaning he can leave man utd on free transfer.

I doubt he'd waste 5 mil just to get a free transfer. He'd might as well see out his contract and show some respect to Manchester United - the club has done a lot for him since he moved from Everton a few years ago (and no, not a Man Utd supporter - actually, Chelsea fan =P).

I'd agree. Rooney was better off staying at United then moving to another club.

Money talks. - "Massive £200,000-a-week deal puts Rooney among football's super rich." as the title reads.

It will be interesting to see how he goes after he comes back from injury.

I'm not sure that figure is confirmed.
Regardless he could've got a lot more at City. 3 goals against City/Liverpool and he's back to being a fan favourite and this whole thing is forgotten. Footballers aren't exactly geniuses, Gerrard,Terry and now Roo.

Even so, I'd think Manchester United would have had to offer Rooney a significant increase in wages to convince him to stay. True (as you point out), as long as Rooney stays on the "straight and narrow" - so to speak and scores goals for Man Utd, then this whole saga will eventually be forgotten.

Who do you support?
Rooney's probably just signed the contract that sees him spend the prime of his career at the club. I think his prime concern was that he will be spending those prime years at a club that will challenge for silver. Personally I think this whole  thing was a stunt from Ferguson/Rooney to get more funds from the Glazers. It's just so weird that the club was relatively instant in saying Rooney was going. Usually they deny and deny and try and persuade the player. This is also the first time I've seen a United player he wanted to leave when the Transfer window was open and announce his intentions ages from the window

He signed a long contract so they can get bigger transfer fee? Or is there some regulation against that?
