Research Methods Question

While it seems most schools are plunging straight into 'Mind, Brain and Body', my psych class is still going through Research Methods.  Which, I guess, isn't a bad thing, as it sets us up quite well, but I just want to get to the interesting part already!

I have a research methods question I couldn't answer, and I was wondering if any past or present psych students could give me some help.

Q: In terms of research, why can the lack of control over variables be considered a limitation? Give 2 examples.

Lack of control over variables could lead to confounding variables which effect the DV making it impossible to determine if the IV or the condounding variable had caused the change in the DV?
I don't think I'm on the right track. :-[
