Hi, I'm currently in year 10 and have to choose the vce subjects for next year. However, I am worrying if I should do specilaist.... I am confident in math but worrying I might fail in specialist. Any advice would be appreciated
Hey! I was exactly like you, worried that I wouldn't do well in spec maths. When I picked it up and started doing it, spec really wasn't as hard as people say it is, seriously. I experienced units 1/2 spec to be much easier than 3/4 (that's when the true spec begins!) and as I progressed, I found that I started to create and find the solutions to tricky questions much quicker, maybe that'll happen to you, I don't know.
The only 2 things you should think about before deciding is:
1. Specialist does require more time than other subjects, though if you're good at math, speed will increase. Are you willing to put in that effort
2. Do you really enjoy math? If not - don't do it, because trust me I had a class of 7 spec students in yr 11 and it dropped to 3 now in yr 12 because they didn't possess that passion for math.
Specialist isn't a prerequisite for any course but it is extremely valuable for certain courses such as engineering etc. You get to enjoy the super scaling and bonus aggregate points, also skip a whole subject in uni! Thats why those who are entertained by math study it, so don't use the scaling and stuff as a reason to pick it up.
If you love math and are good at it, give it a go, but if you do pick it up please don't give up easily. Have fun and good luck with your VCE!
