Photonics?

I was just wondering what parts of photonics we need to know. I'm using heinemann and the teacher said that some of it isn't important and we don't need to know.   
2007-08 VCE - Accounting, Texts & Traditions, Methods, Chem, Physics, Lit

Have you checked out the Study Design?
2007: Biology - 37
2008: English -36 , Specialist Maths - 38, Maths Methods - 42, Chemistry - 36, Physics - 40

Yeah, it was a bit vague. Wanted a bit more clarity.
