Title: Bea needs to get her P's
Post by: beatroot on August 09, 2018, 09:27:06 pm
On a very similar note to J41's driving thread, I too need to get it together and learn how to drive. I should technically be on my green P's by now but I've been putting off driving for years. I've had my learner's license since October 2016 and drove for one hour back in 2017. I've been super reliant on the public transport in my area but it's about time I go get my P's.

I've got a list of 11 P-platers (possibly more?) I owe multiple rides to. I admire their generosity and patience to drive me around, pick me up from stations and drop me home. But most of all, I owe my mother a shit ton of rides. She didn't learn how to drive until she was 35 and the main reason she only started to drive was because she wanted to drive me to school when it was snowing (when we used to live back in the UK). She inspires me for being the only family member who could drive so I would love to repay her back the favour.

But also I just wanna go to drive through's so I don't have to keep paying the delivery fee on Uber Eats hohohohoho.

As of right now, I currently have 8.5 hours in my logbook. I had my initial lesson with NRMA last week and I had another lesson today. My driving instructor told me I was quite a good driver for someone who's only done two lessons so he made drive on the main road today and all the roundabouts in my area.

Driving is actually quite fun surprisingly. I hope to have my P's by May(?) next year.

Please join me in this journey as I walk one step closer to adulthood :)

hey what's up you guys yes

I had another driving lesson with my instructor. I drove around this quiet area near my place for about 15 minutes.

I don't know if it was a good or bad idea to tell my instructor I needed to go shopping afterwards because nek minnit I'm driving on the motorway at 80km/hr to head off to a nearby Westfield and I'm surprised that I'm still alive. To be fair, driving on the motorway is not bad as it is just driving in a straight direction. It's just trying to merge, swapping lanes and turning is my worst nightmare. I wouldn't stop screaming and swearing in the car ahaha.

Nearly bumped into a car when I was trying to merge rip.

I find it so weird that it doesn't matter if you're driving at 20km or 80km, it feels the same.

My instructor told me that in my later lessons, he's gonna make drive in the CBD, in the tunnel and even the Harbour bridge itself which is WILD. I can't imagine myself driving on the bridge.

Can't wait for next week! Driving is so cool and so fun ;D I don't understand why I didn't do this earlier hohohoho

hey guys welcome back to my youtube channel

ANYWAYS i drove with my driving instructor (again lol) for one hour. we practiced turning corners, swapping lanes and parking. We drove places near my house and the beach.

So that’s 13.5 hours on my L’s so far (don’t think I could include my 1hr from 2017 because I forgot to get it signed oops).

Am hoping to get more hours when we go to the countryside this weekend :-)

I drove for the first time using my mother's car yesterday because I wanted to test it out. I drove for (literally) five minutes and my mother told me afterwards that I can only drive her car (for reals) once I've finished all my 10 hour driving lessons with NRMA lmao. I found my mother's car's brake and pedal to be a lot more sensitive than the one I use for my lessons and the steering wheel harder to work.

Don't think there's any point in logging five minutes into my log book aha

When I was on my L's I literally logged everythinggg. Even the trips that were 5 minutes, if that was 5 minutes of my mother yelling at me 'SLOW DOWN!' or 'YOUR CREEPING LEFT!' then it was a damn 5 minutes worth her signing off on lmao

Can't wait to hear all about your driving adventures !!

It can take a bit of getting used to to drive other cars but I think it's a really important thing to do when you're learning to drive. It makes you more aware of and sensitive to the car and what it's doing, and it makes you keep on paying attention because no car drives the exact same as another one.

Keep on soldiering on, Bea! You're doing an awesome job

My instructor told me that I will swap to my mum's car by my 7th/8th lesson so that I could get used to it. Makes me a bit nervous though because (obviously) my mother's car doesn't have a dual brake like my instructor's car but ya girl gotta get over her fears in order to get her P's.

Thanks Kate <3

Yay another one hour driving lesson today woohoo!

I've noticed I'm better with turning and swapping lanes now which is good.

Though when stopping/giving way at intersections, I tend to hold off for a long time and my instructor's like "JUST DRIVE ALREADY" which is a new goal I must work on.

Edit: It was my first time driving on a Saturday so the roads were busier than usual and there were so many cars oml nearly cried.

When I was learning to drive I also found it hard to know how long to leave when giving way. When you're a passenger and someone's driving pay attention to what sort of gaps they leave, I found watching people helped me develop my skills. Most of all just keep on practicing!!

Absolutely killing it, Bea 👊

hi how are ya?

Another one hour- well 40 minutes for my driving lesson today. Here's the thing- my instructor was late by 10 minutes and I begged my instructor to let me get to my film shoot 10 minutes early. He was very understanding and could tell I was stressing about my film shoot so the missing 20 minutes from today shall be added onto my lesson next week.

ANYWAYS, for the first time ever he made me start driving straight from my house. I was a bit scared at first because when you try to get onto the main road from my street, there are literally tons of cars parked on the road so you can't even see if there are cars approaching. I managed to pull through and I'm more confident with decision making when it comes to normal/T intersections yay!

My turning is definitely getting better which is so G R E A T !!! I even managed to do a fourth exit on a roundabout and I was screaming because I was so happy I managed to do a fourth exit woohoo!

I drove in tons of steep areas so the brake and the accelerator were definitely my best friends for today.

My instructor said I'll be driving in my mother's car very soon. How exciting.
Also possible chance he'll make me drive in the CBD in the next lesson.
I'm lowkey terrified.

Sydney drivers are a nightmare.

That's all from today xo

I drove with my instructor again (what a surprise!) but this time …I DROVE MY MOTHER’S CAR :O

The brake and accelerator were so darn sensitive at first and the steering wheel was so different to my instructor’s car. It was just like when I first drove her car three weeks ago. But after a few minutes, I realised that her car wasn't so bad after all. In fact, the steering wheel was better to manoeuvre and the accelerator wasn't too bad. Brake was still meh but not as sensitive as to when I first drove it. Yay! My mum's car is a lil Yaris so it does take time to build speed but at least it decreases chances of me driving over the speed limit aha.

My instructor made me drive to a shopping centre nearby and we drove around the carpark. I practiced how to park my car (my car was on an angle but at least I was in between the white lines ;) ). I also drove on the motorway again oml (80km/hr is honestly crazy ahhh). Driving through roundabouts is getting better and my turning is great now!

Although if there's one thing I noticed from today, since I was using a new car- I was a bit more tensed because I was fully aware that my mother's car did not have a dual brake like my instructor's car. My arms were tensed as well so everytime I would look in my side mirror when changing lanes or looking at my speedometer, my arms would move the steering wheel a bit to the point where parts of the car were so damn close to another lane/car (if that makes sense?) This is definitely a thing I need to work on because I obviously don't want to drift into a different lane/car by accident.

Though I am glad I was able to use my mother's car and get used to its accelerator and brake because now this presents many opportunities beyond driving with my instructor and show my mother that- yes I am capable of driving her car. I'm hoping to drive to university tomorrow and drive to my grandparents' place this Sunday.

:)
My 16 year old cousin got his L's recently and I am turning 19 this October (wow I'm getting old). It would be embarrassing if he got his red P's before me. He lives in an area where public transport barely exists whilst buses come every five minutes from where I live. Of course, he has a lot more opportunities than me. Though he does need to hold his L's for at least a year before he gets his P's. I've had this learner's license for nearly two years now so I can pretty much take the test once I reach 120 hours. The goal is to get my P's by May next year- just a month before I have production block at film school. It will make things so much easier if I were to drive to film shoots rather than taking public transport.

A very long entry today but I'm just glad that I was able to drive my mother's Yaris.

hey guys

I drove a total of 1hr 20mins today- broken down into three different drives (15 minutes, 35 minutes & 30 minutes)

I did drive to my grandparents’ place today. I also drove my mother, uncle and my cousins to a nearby outlet.

Drive was quite good besides me, yet again, not exactly driving in the middle of my lane and drifting slowly to either the lane on my left or right. Parking was quite tragic and oml I hate it so much.

Besides from that, I’m glad that I was able to drive my mother’s car WITH my mother and uncle as my supervising drivers. Can’t wait to tell my instructor this big news!

PS: I also calculated if I do a minimum of 2 hours driving per week, I can get my red P’s by May (excluding my remaining driving lessons and the safe drivers’ course)

Idk if anyone's getting sick of me constantly updating this thread ahaha pls tell me

I drove again (wow no way woah woah woah) with my instructor in the passenger and my mother in the backseat. We drove around this really nice area near my suburb that I've never been to before (lack of public transport in the area) so it was nice discovering this new place. It was slighly spitting today though so it was my first time driving using a windshield wiper and I guess that was pretty cool.

Still facing the same goddamn problem- staying right in the middle of my lane. It just feels right when you're sitting in the driver's seat, you know? But apparently I veer off slightly to the left lane which is a big no no. And also turning omllll I keep eating the other lane AHHHHH.

I encountered the WORST drivers today. The worse one was when I was trying to turn right onto my street but this driver beeped me even though I was indicating right. I was just waiting for the road to clear for me to turn. SYDNEY DRIVERS YOU ARE THE WORSE and put me off driving sometimes smh. It makes me wonder how they even got their full license in the first place, but that's none of my business *Kermit sipping tea gif*

I've got three lessons left with my driving instructor which is actually kinda sad.

Ahh yeah staying straight in your lane takes some getting used to, I think it's because you are used to sitting in the passenger seat which is on the opposite side of the car.

With the bad drivers, you can just imagine instructers crying inside thinking about how people they may have taught have ended up such reckless/dangerous drivers  :-\  This is why I live in Newcastle, there are still bad drivers but at least there aren't as many people on the roads.

Keep it up though, it will definitely be worth it when you get your Ps  :D

Gave my mother and my aunt a lil tour of my university then drove to a nearby Westfield via the motorway (1.5hrs from today). Turning and brake are improving though my judgement of other drivers was very poor today. It was quite a tense drive.

I used my driving instructor's car since my mum was out with her car for the entire day. It was weird being back in his car. Brake was definitely sensitive, as well as the steering wheel.

Today's drive has been filled with many unsafe driving practices (forgive me driving gods/NRMA) due to me worrying about my auditions after the drive (I really need to stop booking driving lessons before film shoots and other film related things- it doesn't help aha). For instance, forgetting to indicate when I'm turning (IM SORRY) or stepping on the gas to avoid stopping at an intersection that's about to turn red from yellow (again, IM SORRY) or not checking my mirrors when I'm changing lanes (I REALLY AM SORRY) and most of all- parking in a no stopping zone and pressing on the hazard button to avoid getting caught (IM A DISAPPOINTMENT).

Today has been W I L D. I think it was a mixture of the fact- a) since I was back in my instructor's car, the dual brake meant I knew he had control of the car b) me being anxious about the auditions after the drive c) me being overly confident (since this is my 9th lesson) that I seem to forget all the basic stuff ie; forgetting to put down the handbrake and change into drive when I was about to start driving.

I'll be good next lesson, I swear.

But besides from that, tons of windy and steep roads today. It was a good challenge.

I'll be driving in Sydney's CBD next week. Wish me luck! I hate Sydney drivers. (which means I hate myself hohohoho hilarious)

Drove in Sydney's CBD ahhh. Wasn't too bad- very traffic and rain so there was a lot of stopping.

There was an ambulance at one point and I slowed down for it and it didn't go and I was like tf and I drove past it and my instructor was like 'woah woah woah you're meant to give way to it'. I swear it wasn't blaring so it wasn't in an emergency. Lesson learnt for next time.

Drove in a tunnel for the first time.

Last driving lesson next week!

So I learned how to parallel park today- which is surprisingly easier than having to normal park ahahha.
I like how there's a formula when parallel parking, because when I just normal park (you know the type of parking when you just drive straight into a parking space), I'm always off. I don't know when to exactly full lock the steering wheel and drive into the parking space.

But A N Y W A Y S, at least I learned how to parallel park and I feel really good about it.

I don't have anymore driving lessons with NRMA. I'm gonna try and do at least two hours per week from now on. I can apply for the safe driver's course when I've got 50 real hours!! Apparently only one hour counts from my 3 for 1 driving lessons so once I reach 65 hours (50 official real hours), I can do the safe driver's course!!!

I calculated that I just need to drive two hours per week til January 24, 2019 to get to my 65 hours goal. (*I mean I could technically get to my 65 hour goal earlier than January but it really just depends on my mother and her availabilities)

I can't believe it's been 11 weeks since I started my driving lessons. Time flies...

I've been a bit rusty with my driving in the last two weeks but making some good progress I think. I'm annoyed at myself for doing dumb things on the road ie forgetting to signal or pressing on the brake when I'm so close to an intersection or not being able to park properly. Did some night driving for the first time and I didn't realise I had my high beam on until someone was blinking their lights at me. To all the drivers I drove past last night: I'm sorry for my high beam.

The best way to start!

You should also think about doing a safe drivers course now. You could bump that up to 79hrs 50mins in a day  ;)

Hello Adam!

I'm gonna do the safe drivers course very soon. I did 10 driving lessons back in August to October 2018 so technically 20 of my hours aren't real since they're bonus hours from my driving lessons (if that makes sense lol ??) I would have to wait 'til I hit 65+ hours because I would've done 50 real hours by that time. This whole bonus and real hours thing is so confusing aha.

If I can, I'll try to do the course in the third week of January. If I don't reach 65 hours by then (I probably won't because I've committed to so many things this month!), I'll just do it in February. Either way, I'll definitely do the course before I go back to uni :)

Doing an absolute horrendous job by not driving since new years day due to my absurd amount of commitments this month. I could literally feel my driving skills leave my body and I'm like 'ah pls come back'.

I hope to start driving again in February and really push myself to get my P's in July during my semester break :) Hope to do the safe drivers course at the end of Feb max.

Finally finally finally got back into driving today after a SIX WEEK break. Was a bit rusty in the first five minutes but was fine afterwards. My mum told me my driving was better after my six week break which is weird lol. I realised how much I missed driving and nearly forgot how much I complain when I drive  ;D

Hours driven: 58hrs 20mins (day) 3hrs (night)
= 61hrs 20mins in total

Ehhh not too sure. Would be nice to get my P's by the end of the year. July is more ideal but it seems that I'm much more busy this year than I was last year so I never have time to drive.

try and get the book from someone who already has their Ps and finish off your remaining hours!

Yes breaking the law is certainly the best way for me to get my P's.

Driving at night AND in the rain is a WHOLE experience. Would not recommend 2/10. But good practice for the future I suppose.

I don’t know why but was expecting the safe driver’s course to be dry and boring but ended up liking it. Module 1 involved the five of us in a little classroom and going through a workbook. Learnt some very interesting statistic and observations about red P platers. Module 2 was me and this other guy driving in our area. The coach (who was actually my driving instructor in the past- yay for a mini reunion!) specifically designed the route to be as challenging as possible with different many potential hazards and opportunities to demonstrate safe driving.

Hours driven: 92hrs 40mins (day) 8hrs 45mins (night)
= 101hrs 25mins (total)

I'd say you're driving me crazy, but that'd require getting behind the wheel. This is a CALL OUT

Looking forward to reading next week's update then

Let's get this bread P's

Also need to book my Hazard perception test soon. They're exactly like the modules posted online, aren't they? How many questions are there and what is the max amount of questions I can get wrong and still pass ahaha

Hours driven: 94hrs 40mins (day) 11hrs 45mins (night)

Yeah, the questions for the hazard perception test were exactly the same as the online one. They have instructions, 2 practise questions and then 15 test questions. The whole thing took me around 10 minutes. Not too sure how many questions you can get wrong though-they didn't give me my mark at the end.

Good luck for it!! Looking forward to your next updates! :)

Just exactly like the modules online. Wished the test gave me better feedback (said that I could improve in some areas but didn't specify which ones). I should be glad that I passed it though still would like to know which areas I needed improvement on. Want to be a safe and responsible driver as much as possible!

So close to completing my night hours yessss

I did my test today and passed!!
It still hasn't sunk it yet 100% but glad that I passed on the first try. It's nearly been three years since I got my learner's license and it's been almost a year since I actually started driving.

Thanks to everyone on AN who has followed my journey to getting my red P's ahaha. Thank you for keeping me accountable :)

Would definitely recommend to everyone making a thread here on the 'Accountability and Motivation' board if you want to reach a certain goal. I approached this thread as an online logbook and helped me look back on my driving and hours.

Here's my final entry here on this thread :)

Long time, no see!

I got my green p's last August (yay!) and my first fine ever today (nooo)!

Bit upset that I had to pay a fine (red light camera woops) and they gave me the maximum penalty. But it's a lesson learnt and this will definitely make me be a more careful driver on the road next time (even though there are much worse drivers than me but never get fined for some reason)
