Title: What do you think of learning all the content by myself?
Post by: asher32 on November 04, 2018, 11:14:02 am
Hey, so I saw this thing where you learn all the content of your humanities/histories as a sort of accelerated course by yourself at home and then the rest of the year is just spent revising in class. That way you have plenty of time for practice papers and teacher consultation. I was aiming to get Legal and SOR downpat in the 6 week holidays. I'm wondering if this is a suitable method and if it has worked for past students. Or is it too ambitious? Thanks.

Hey there,
Although I didn't do Legal Studies, I have had some experience in trying to teach content myself, specifically subjects like Physics, Modern and Extension Math (before I dropped it). To be honest, even though it was great to expose myself to what content I'll be going through, it ended up being a waste of time because my teacher wanted to go through things differently or I ended up looking at the wrong elective entirely- this is more applicable to Physics and Modern. As for Extension Math, I had to teach the content myself because my teacher sucked at teaching math. Plus, you have 6 weeks of holidays- use that break! You're gonna find yourself being burnt out before the HSC exams even start, and I found myself breaking down and crying a lot halfway in the year because I was so overwhelmed with everything.

I would suggest skimming through the syllabus to see what you're gonna be looking at in class and start going through some light content- ATAR Notes should be having another lecture series in January so that should give you an opportunity to get a head start but not to the extent that it will overwhelm you. Although I haven't seen the Legal Studies syllabus, coming from experience from doing 2 Humanities subjects, these Humanities syllabuses are intense so cramming all that in 6 weeks may be overwhelming.

Hope this helps!

Well I’ll just put in another perspective! So I did 4 humanities subjects, including Legal Studies and I think it’s only to a certain extent that you can teach yourself at home. Like with that being said I did most of my notes in advance so I would be ready to go and already understood what I would be learning about in class while also providing the long term benefits of me not rushing to do notes around exam time.

However, I think the downfall to this, specifically for Legal Stufies, is your ability to stay contemporary. I know that my teacher every week would provide us with new LCMD, specifically ones from 2018 so we could stay contemporary and thus, allow us to fulfil the “contemporary issues” part of the marking scheme.

However, in saying that if you’re dedicated in doing extensive research, watching the news and essentially keep up to date on everything that’s going around in the world you might be okay.

Ultimately, it’s your personal choice but in my opinion might be a bit too ambitious :)

I personally did legal and SOR and in the 6 week holidays i prepared for legal. My advice to you is to familiarise yourself with the syllabus (for legal and other humanities) more so than the actual content. I was lucky enough to have family members who have done legal, which is how i knew i was on track. But honestly that syllabus will be your life, know the different components and keep tabs on the news. If i were you i would only focus on the Crime component for Legal and since i did SOR I, i got through the whole syllabus in about two weeks). If you're really dedicated then i dont think its too ambitious, but give yourself a break cause this time next year you'll wish you did (haha not trying to scare you).
