Engineering at Monash University Inquiry

Hi Guys,

I don't know where to post this so I decided to post it here. Apologies if this is the wrong forum to post this.

Anyways, I just finished Year 12 and completing VCE and am looking to do Bachelor of Engineering at Monash University next year.

However, I did not do Specialist Maths. Does this mean that Specialist Maths will be one of my electives when I am at Uni? If so, will they cover the whole Specialist Maths content or just the bits necessary for Engineering? Also, how long will the Specialist Maths elective run for(One of my friends said 8 weeks but not sure if that is true or not)?

Also, I finished completing Math Methods in Year 11 and as a result, I have forgotten most of the content.

Do you think it would be a good idea to revise certain sections of Math Methods and get a head start towards Specialist Maths so by the time I get to University, I would most probably understand most of the Specialist Maths content by then and thus, will be less stressful for me when I start University? Or do you think it is unnecessary and University will take care of making sure I understand the things required?

Also, it would be great if someone could write a list of things from the Math Methods and Specialist Maths syllabus that are relevant in the Bachelor of Engineering Syllabus. By the way, I will be doing a common first year if I do get in(that is, trying out all the different types of Engineering's on offer at Monash University).

Also, would I receive an email before University starts containing a list of things that I am already expected to know before Uni starts regarding the content of Engineering at University? Also, is there any compulsory Holiday Homework that I will receive before University starts?

Sorry for the long post but it will be very much appreciated if someone can reply to this post.

Thanks  :)

I'll answer the second part of your question. It would be better if you revised some Specialist math in the holidays just because universities tend to fly through topics in first year and if your a student who perhaps requires more time to understand concepts then you may not understand some of the stuff they will teach you. University especially does not 'hold your hand' so to speak. It's not like high school where the teachers will approach you if they see you struggling.

And no there is no homework before uni starts lol..

1. According to the Bachelor of Engineering handbook entry here, you'd probably have to take ENG1090, a maths unit (subject) that is roughly equivalent to Spesh. It is a part of your engineering studies, so it's technically not an elective unit. You can use the course map and look at the "if you need to enrol in foundation maths" section to see what I'm talking about.
2. Whatever they believe to be relevant to Engineering, usually. According to the ENG1090 handbook entry, it seems to cover quite a few of the major topics of Spesh, but not all (I didn't do VCE Spesh, but seem to recall these topics vaguely being in there).
3. A whole semester (12 weeks), if it's a full unit, but might be (technically) shorter if the unit doesn't have classes every week/ has revision classes for a week or two.

Also, I finished completing Math Methods in Year 11 and as a result, I have forgotten most of the content.

DrDusk seems to have you covered there, so I'll skip this.

Unfortunately I can't help there, but the Monash subject reviews may be somewhat of assistance.

By the way, I will be doing a common first year if I do get in(that is, trying out all the different types of Engineering's on offer at Monash University).
Pretty sure all students will be taking 1 of 4 streams of the common first year, sorted according to whether or not you've done VCE Physics and/or Spesh. The common first year is a mandatory aspect of the course from what I've heard.

Also, would I receive an email before University starts containing a list of things that I am already expected to know before Uni starts regarding the content of Engineering at University?
It's quite unlikely you'll receive a list of things you're expected to know before uni starts, as they usually run through expectations and an overview of the unit/ course on the first week sometime (usually in your first lecture). If anything, lecturers and/or staff will likely just introduce themselves via the Monash learning portal (think something like Compass, if your school used it) called Moodle and maybe a few things here and there, but overall the main/ important stuff is usually found in the first couple of classes.

Basically, it's very unlikely that you will start anything content-wise before semester truly begins.

Also, is there any compulsory Holiday Homework that I will receive before University starts?
Nope. Not unless things have changed since my high school classmate who studied Monash Eng took first year (in 2015).

Thanks DrDusk and AngelWings for the replies. It is much appreciated.

Also, is there an orientation day or orientation week before university actually starts for students starting university next year at Monash?

Yes, there's O Week the week before semester starts, which usually has social activities, a club/ societies fair, campus tours and some more faculty-oriented stuff. There's also a faculty-oriented Orientation Day in the same week, in which you usually get to meet fellow students within the faculty. This usually gets advertised either with offers or closer to the date (late Feb/ early March 2020).

Yo soz for hijacking the thread but I'm not exactly sure where to post this

I also hope to do engineering (double with commerce) at Monash in 2020  ;D and I was wondering if anybody has any laptop suggestions or tips on the specs/features I should consider when purchasing a laptop for engineering next year

thanks in advance  ;)

Most laptop nowadays are good enough for general usage needs.
Assuming that your main purpose is for uni work and not for something like gaming, the main factors that I would consider when buying a laptop are:

1. Size and weight - 2 kg doesn't sound like a lot compared to 1 kg but it adds up, especially if you are travelling long distances to get to uni and have to walk a lot. A larger laptop could also be an inconvenience.
2. Windows laptop - I would get a windows laptop, as I believe some programs you need may not work (or be a pain to set up) on Mac.
3. Storage - go with a Solid State Drive for your storage option, some laptops still have hard disks which will make your laptop load slow.
4. Battery life - self explanatory, a good battery life is beneficial.

Other factors such as screen resolution, keyboard, track pads and stuff I don't find important, but you may prioritise higher.

Could someone please tell me what Math Methods and Specialist Maths topics are involved in Engineering at Monash University. All replies will be much appreciated. Thanks  :)
