University Grading/Results

Hello, my name is Tommy and I will be starting as a first year student at the University of Melbourne in the Bachelor of Biomedicine; I have some questions related to the grading.

What does the mark at the end of each subject mean? Does getting 80 (H1) mean you are in top 20%.. or something else?

Generally how hard is it to achieve a H1 average across all subjects?

THanks TOmmy

For the most part, the mark you get is just the mark that you earned regardless of what everyone else got. Sometimes there will be scaling but that isn't too common.

H1 across all subjects is definitely possible but it really wouldn't be common. It is more likely for someone to "mess up" at least once over 24 subjects. Although, I don't think a lot of people are even aiming for 24 HDs.

So the mark gotten after each subject is just a raw mark and has nothing to do with rankings [unlike atar]

yes for the most part that is the case but there are cases of scaling occurring

Hey, I did Science at UniMelb, but I can say that an H1 average is definitely achievable if you put in the effort for your subjects. At the same time, it's also important to pick subjects you're genuinely interested in or what your strengths lie in (for instance, looking at your VCE scores, maths/commerce subjects might be your strength), because these subjects will be the ones you'll likely do quite well in. Generally scaling doesn't usually occur for subjects, so make sure you don't drop any 'easy' marks during the semester (such as forgetting to do a weekly quiz), but I have had some subjects which I knew were definitely scaled up when I did them (such as Principles of Finance and Calc 1), though that decision is based on the subject coordinator (I have done subjects which had unexpectedly difficult exams but no scaling).
2017 ATAR: 99.20

ooh sorry I slightly misread your question. A H1 average is a lot easier (still not objectively "easy" tho) than getting a H1 in all of your subjects so definitely manageable if that is your aim.

As a three year in biomed, for the most a H1 is a raw mark over 80, and defs a H1 wam is achievable, but it does take alot of work. Pretty the only subject in Biomed that had scaling was Chem for Biomed and the Maths subjects (for certain assessments) but this was back in 2019, with all online assessments (i.e. final exams being online) I am not sure how the scaling was in 2020.
But yes a mark of 80 does not put you in the top 20%, it is just your raw mark.
Best of luck with first year!
Feel free to pm me if you have any question about first-year biomedicine I would be glad to help
