Hey guys,
I’m hoping to take French or Italian 1 as my breadth this semester but I was wondering if anyone knows roughly when these exams would take place? I’m hoping to go away towards the end of the exam period but I’m concerned that by taking a breadth with an exam the dates will clash! If anyone could help me out by letting me know roughly when language exams take place in the exam calendar that would be great :)

Don't risk it. Exams change time every semester. Book your holiday after the exam period.

When you've finished your degree at the end of 2018, and chose to attend the 2019 mid-year graduation to get your certificate instead, but company requires proof of your graduation to hire you for their graduate program what do you do? I checked the uni policy and they don't mail certificates out until after the graduation ceremony you're signed up to.

Where or what clubs on campus are best for meeting people? What volunteering positions do people recommend?

I think this is a fairly subjective issue. You'll probably gain more enjoyment from the clubs that are actually aligned with your personal interests. You can explore all of these options during O-Week :)

I'm personally not aware of too many volunteering positions that run at Unimelb. One I can recommend, however, is Open Day! IIRC applications come out in June, and you can volunteer to be a tour guide, stall member, etc. It's a really great day, and you meet some wonderful people. However, if you are looking for a more sustained volunteering role, it might be worth waiting for the response of another user or asking around during O-Week.

In short, how difficult is it to learn the IPA -- comparable to that of another language? Thanks.

I've previously studied the Secret Life of Language, which devotes 3-4 weeks to phonetics/phonology. Owing to the number of tutorial exercises that you complete over this time, you *unconsciously* become pretty familiar with the IPA chart. I think it took me 2 weeks to remember nearly everything. I'm sure if you devoted a few days to committed memorisation, you could have it down pat. In my opinion, learning another language is much more difficult. The nature and breadth of material that you need to familiarise yourself with is much greater than the content of the IPA chart. Good luck :)

Do any graduates on here still travel with a concession myki? Is it ok just to show your healthcare card when checked by a ticket inspector?
Because that's what is seems to say here: https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/tickets/myki/concessions-and-free-travel/health-care-card/

Yep - you don't need to be a student to use a Health Care Card as concession (provided you meet all the eligibility criteria) :)

You would typically find out in either late Week 1 or in Week 2. They're usually sent out at the same time, like a mail merge.
