Hello everyone and thank you for checking this forum out. Exams are starting to creep up and I am afraid of it, if someone can give me some handy tips for EBSS exams it would be really helpful.
One big question that I have is: for the essay what do we have to write about?
I also did exams for selective schools the previous year and didn't get in. I am just hoping this year the outcomes are different.
-
I'm also doing the exams for EBSS this year as well.....
I saw from the other thread that the writing piece is an "Essay about how EBSS can help you" (source: https://atarnotes.com/forum/index.php?topic=176822.0)
Im stressing about the test since there's like 21 days to go :P

Yeah I am stressing out too.

Time goes so fast xD. Soon we will be sitting the exam.

This time in three weeks we will be relieved that the test is over ;) :)
How are you studying for it?

I am covering all the math topic that I should be, I am also practicing the essay. In my opinion, I recommend you practice a bit of everything just in case.
Also there isn't too many people applying for EBS, but still we should study.

True,,,, are you studying the year 10 math curriculum or the year 11 one?
-

Year 10 for now. We don't need year 11.
If it was year 11, majority of the people will be screwed because not much knows year 11 math methods. :)
-

Ok that's good that they wont include year 11 :)
I'm kinda worried about science reasoning tho since there is not a lot of practice tests about it online :-\ :o
-

Yeah I agree.
Also you applied to multiple selective schools last year right?
-
If u don't mind me asking, What are the different types of tests for the EBSS selective exam?
And is it also run by Edu-test?
-
Also you applied to multiple selective schools last year right?
I did the test for macrob in 2017 but didn't get in :/
If u don't mind me asking, What are the different types of tests for the EBSS selective exam?

Yes it is run by Edu-test, There is Mathematics, Science Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Reading Comprehension and an Essay about how EBSS can help you.
-
I am pretty sure edu test runs all selective entry test.
Don't worry too much guys, I am pretty sure not that many people apply for EBSS. I think it's due to the fact that a lot don't know about it or a lot of people decline it.
I did the test for macrob in 2017 but didn't get in :/
I went for JMSS and also how many superiors did you get?
-
I went for JMSS and also how many superiors did you get?
lmao i got all high average... (i know i did so bad xD i didn't even study much oops)

Hopefully not too many people applied xD

I got a couple of high averages and some average, this result was for Suzanne Cory High school. LOL I did bad too.
Hopefully not too many people applied xD
I hope not, but it should be roughly around 200-300.
Around half get an interview and top 100 get offered a place, but from what I heard a huge chuck of people decline a place at EBSS. That is because your subject choices are limited and also extended investigation is compulsory, not to mention the travel time might not be worth it.

I'm willing to do any subject to get into that school lol xD
Really? :'(
-

Yeah we should. Superiors are easy to get if there is less competition.
Sounds like you have it planned out. Make sure you do what you like tho and not what the school wants to see. :) :) :)
Around there, like I said many people will reject EBSS. That means we have a big chance, normally the people who reject are the smarter people, the people who always get superiors or the people at other selective/private schools.
Let me give you a tip, if you score high averages-superiors you should have a decent chance of getting in. Just make sure you don't get low or below average.
Also did you get into the interview at Mac rob last year? Is high averages enough to earn you an interview?
-
Also did you get into the interview at Mac rob last year? Is high averages enough to earn you an interview?
Nooo :( but there were around 8 people in my year level trying out (2 got into Macrob and 1 into suzanne cory)
I'm worried about the mathematics test bc i did the free practice test yesterday from education.vic.gov.au and i got 33/60 :P
Yes hehe ;D
Luckily EBS is less competitive compared to JMSS and the four selective high school. :)
You said you did the JMSS exam? How did you find the science reasoning test?
-
You said you did the JMSS exam? How did you find the science reasoning test?
The science reasoning is the one I am most worried about. There is no actual way of preparing for it, science is a huge field. The best way to prepare is probably to know the basics at most.
Suzanne Cory is only easy to get in at year 8 level, other years it is just as hard as others. Tbh Suzanne Cory isn't bad, its just difficult to get into. I got 2-3 high averages and the rest was average......DARN IT. I needed at least 2-3 superiors.
Yeah that is good!!! I think you are good at math and should focus on other parts of the exam.
Also how come you didn't try out for JMSS?
-
Also how come you didn't try out for JMSS?
It's too far from my house, my parents wouldn't let me :/ and at that time i didn't want a career in the medical field :)
It's going to be hard going through year 9-10 science books :( :( (thank god i'm currently learning the periodic table at school)
Were there many people doing the selective school test at your year level?
I got 4 high averages and the 2 averages (our results are similar lol) luckily the numerical reasoning isn't on the test coz i got average for that :-X
-
It's too far from my house, my parents wouldn't let me :/ and at that time i didn't want a career in the medical field :)
Oh ok, I always wanted a career in science and math. For some reason I never got into any selective school.
Yeah it will be, but if try hard then in the end success will come.
Yeah our results are very alike and yeah I got average for that as well. OH HELL YEAH, A LOT OF PEOPLE DID SELECTIVE SCHOOL TEST IN OUR YEAR LEVEL. Geez the competition is crazy.
Also superiors are top 11% of the people doing it, so that means we might not make the cut. *High/above average should be enough to get us in.
-
Hi guys, did anybody here get an interview for jmss this year? year 11 entry
-
Did you study back then or revise? I mean for selective school test. *High averages isn't bad, its pretty good*
I didn't go for Jmss in year 11, but my friend did and he got an interview.
Did anyone here go for JMSS in year 11?
-

in year 8 i got into nossal but turned down the offer with high averages and 1 superior
I didn't go for Jmss in year 11, but my friend did and he got an interview.
nice i got an interview aswell do u know what time and day?
-
nice i got an interview aswell do u know what time and day?
He is going 18th July.
You should have gone to Nossal, its a good school.
Tbh I wish I got into Nossal, its better then Haileybury and that private school cost $30,000+
-
Oh ok, I always wanted a career in science and math. For some reason I never got into any selective school.
Hopefully we both get into EBS
Hopefully our hard work pays off ;) :)
Having at least 3 above averages would be pretty good

For maths i bought the "excel yr9 revision & exam book" and completed not even half of it :-[ and basically tried to cram in the formulas whilst in the car on the way to the exam place xD
For english i had a private tutor who basically gave me reading comprehensions and writing topics similar to the exams each week.
Did you study?
-
Hopefully we both get into EBS
i'm also gonna be trying out for EBS, is there and verbal and reading comprehension tips you could provide for me if so that would be amazing
-

Hmm maybe completing reading comprehension practice tests to get used to the time limit?
[i also found the "Excel yr7-10 developing your comprehension skills" book in pdf form online,, (it includes tips on how to improve your comprehension skills) http://www.blake.com.au/v/vspfiles/downloadables/members/9781741250022_EES-Developing-Your-Comprehension-Skills-Years-7-10.pdf]
I hope this helps ^^^
I have no clue on how to study for the verbal reasoning test besides learning new vocab. :/
-

Let's all get in to EBS and maybe we can all meet there.
The best way to prepare for anything is to just practice again and again, I mean you still have around 16 days to go.
Do you guys know anyone else trying? Except anyone here.
You would pass the exam easily with 3 above averages, but that would mean you get to be within top 23% of people doing it.
Lol that isn't too bad, I didn't study at all. Legit I just went there with whatever knowledge I had.
Hard work always pays off in the end, lucky for us there will always be someone who won't study at all. Those are the people at high risk of not passing, so lets all work hard and not tell people about EBS.
Exams are soon so get ready......this might be our last chance.
For previous years I didn't study at all.
-
Do you guys know anyone else trying? Except anyone here.
My friend goes to unihigh and she said more than half of her year level is trying out 😧
Yuppp ;)
Yes hope we all can !! We got 16 days to go!!
-
Lol that isn't too bad, I didn't study at all. Legit I just went there with whatever knowledge I had.
If you got high average without studying that means you’ll probs get above average or superior with studying so that’s good!! :)
-
My friend goes to unihigh and she said more than half of her year level is trying out 😧
Holy moly, that does not sound good.
Yeah true :) :) :)
From what I heard above averages is enough to get you in.
Yup, let's keep a countdown.
Lol since when did EBS get so popular and also how many people are in University high school year 10 cohort in total?
Base on the statistics I received, I am pretty sure around 300 people are applying for 100 places this year. Since more than half the cohort at Uni high is applying, some people applying for JMSS this year will be going for EBS and some people from other schools.
-

Wouldn't that mean there is greater chance, since people may prefer JMSS to EBSS? Cos then some people might put down an offer from EBSS if they were offered JMSS.
-
But lucky this year, we are studying and are more determined than ever. Also since you did not study and got all high averages, that means you could probably end with some above averages.
That is true, but not everyone will be getting into JMSS. But I hope they all do.
-

True! :) Holy moly, that does not sound good.
Haha LOL, Hope for you guys :).
I wonder how many people are in uni high for that cohort.
-

Probably hundreds.

That is a good idea, but no point now, you'll sadly just have to use what you've got. DW i feel like you all will be fine :)
-
Enrolment for EBS open so early and close to late, this is probably because they don't receive as much applicants. So they open it for long and try to get as much people to apply as possible.
-

I guess. Is an interview compulsory for EBSS?
No worries :)
-
I guess. Is an interview compulsory for EBSS?
Yes it is. Everyone must go through that stage.
See ya :)
-
Gtg catch u later ;)
P.S. Don't forget (you've probably been told this multiple times, but its not the school that determines VCE, it's the individual)
-
Hm my friend told me there is roughly 200+ in her cohort... so around 100 or more people trying..... also she said that some of the year 9's in the accelerated program is applying as well...
Hope everyone who applied for JMSS get in hahahha xD
We will definitely make it in if we're determined to! :)
-
We will definitely make it in if we're determined to! :)
Yes we will.
That is not good for us, cuz 100 people applying is huge not to mention 200 others.
Yeah true
Year 9 applying? WOAH THEY MUST BE REALLY SMART.
-
Year 9 applying? WOAH THEY MUST BE REALLY SMART.
So they will finish year 12 a year early? Wow :O
Have you enrolled for the test yet? Did you receive any email about information regarding the test? (i haven't enrolled yet lol, probs will enrol on monday)
-
Have you enrolled for the test yet? Did you receive any email about information regarding the test? (i haven't enrolled yet lol, probs will enrol on monday)
Yeah I enrolled already and no I didn't receive anything from the school yet. I think we receive information after the closing date.
I wish I did that, lol it sounds pretty cool.
Also do you think EBSS is easier than our year 8 selective school competition?
-
I wish I did that, lol it sounds pretty cool.
If i did that, i will graduate at 16... WWOW
-
If i did that, i will graduate at 16... WWOW
Hahahhaha xD
I think for math, doing 60 questions in half an hour will be a problem. I struggle with time more than knowing the concept.
-
Also do you think EBSS is easier than our year 8 selective school competition?
Mmmm maybe since there is less people trying out for it which means we have a greater chance of getting in. I also heard that the mathematics test is easier than the year 8 one. At least we don't have to do numerical and persuasive/creative writing.
-
Oh I did some research and the cohort for University high school was under 150-200. I don't think it was over 200.
-

Same :( i'm worried that the last few pages will be more difficult which means i need to spend more time on it.

HOLY THE YEAR 8 WRITING WAS SO HARD.

Yeah we should be glad!!!! I AM GLAD!!!!
Do you have any tips you want to give me?
-

I MESSED UP ON THE CREATIVE WRITING... I DIDN'T KNOW YOU HAD TO PUT THE DIALOGUE IN THE BEGINNING, I PUT IT IN THE MIDDLE :o :o

I'm glad this thread has been useful for everyone!
Just make sure you don't break forum rules by double/triple posting - try to include all your text in a single post (even if you are reponding to multiple people at the same time) :)
-

Hmm maybe pinpoint your weakest math topic (like do the practice exam to see which topic you struggle with) and focus on them more? I wrote a list of the topics which i struggled with during the practice exam.

For some reason, math always freaks out. I did high average, but I am just scared of it.
-

Same.. it's such a broad subject, there's so many topics :'( :'(
What books does your school use for maths and science? Mine uses cambridge for maths and pearson for science.
-
My school uses Pearson for math and Oxford for science. yeah true math is a board topic and there is a lot to learn.
Do go to tuition for those selective school exams?
-
Do go to tuition for those selective school exams?
No i don't (i did attend james an, north shore & Qs school in the previous years but i find that it doesn't help)
Do you?
-

Nope they don't help at all, they are just there to make money. Legit some people don't go tutoring at all and self study the whole time, yet they still get into a selective school.
Also selective school tutoring could cost $1000 or above, it's way too expensive. I rather save up that money for a private school.
-

I started going to tutor since i was 5 and i guess it did made me 'smarter' than the rest of my peers AT THAT TIME. But i entered high school and tutor doesn't become an advantage for me anymore.

Especially for those selective school tutoring who says "guaranteed entry into _____" they're just ripping off money :/

Yeah tutor at a younger year does give advantages, but tutor at an older year well not really anymore. I went tutor and back then I knew more then my peers AT THAT TIME. However now I went tutor and my peers still do better than me.
Tutor is more beneficial to younger year levels, when we are at this year level its not too useful. Yeah definitely rip off, those tutors are just preparing you, but the true person doing the test is you.

Tutor at our year level is useful if you are falling behind in class and would like some extra help i guess.
How have you been preparing for EBS this week? I keep procrastinating lol :'( :'(

I kinda have been busy with something else, yeah I do that a lot. Don't worry Ebs should be the easiest school you encounter.
I am kinda an average student, so I am not falling behind. But if you are then I suggest looking at why you are behind and remove the problem.

Oh i'm not falling behind either :)

Hey all,
As Sine said, we need to refrain from posting in quick succession after ourselves — like double, triple, or quadruple posting. Rather than posting right after your own post, even if it's to another person, click the modify button, as shown in the top right of your post.
Not only does it make the thread easier to read, but users can more easily find posts relevant to themselves on the right of the page, which shows the ten most recent posts.

You're more than welcome to use the forums — we really encourage it! But you need to try and keep the forums neat, and thus accessible, to everyone else :)

So guys how did Ebss exam go?
-
For Ebs around 150 ppl sat the exam and it is estimated around 80 will get in cause last year they only had 75 accepted.
And don't worry abt uni high guys cause only max of 5% is accepted from every school, so around 40 of them applied so not many will get in.
And how did u guys go?
i kinda found maths and science hard :(

There are no 5% rule at EBSS and also we asked the teacher there and she said 130 sat the exam, so we are lucky and many did not turn up either.
Well as for me, math was kinda easy. Science was hard and reading was hard as hell. The essay was alright for me.

I screwed up maths big time, did okay in science, and I think I did not bad in all the English parts.
Does anyone know when results will be sent to us?

Hey I got a 2nd round offer for EBS into yr 11.
Just got it before the enrolments close.
Can you please pm me the link to the discord you guys are talking on?
-
Hi, Have you received offer letter for 2021 year 11 enrolment? I am bit wondering about enrolment process. Thanks in Advance ...
