This may be a weird question but what is the best approach to learn the contents of unit 4 AOS2 (Evolution) ?

Is memorising the theories and reading through sufficient?..

Thanks!

Based on what I can recall, I would advise you put a good amount of effort into application of theory (e.g. Application of different types of genetic cross). As with any other area of study in VCE biology, it's helpful but not sufficient to memorise things; you need to have a thorough understanding of the theory to apply on the exam.

Good luck!

Make sure you can relate your answers to the principles and behaviours of evolution.

to what extent i(if at all) do we need to know about chromosome trans location, deletion, duplication and certain cases such as down syndrome?

Would I be correct in saying that 'acetyl CoA undergoes a series of oxidation reactions to form CO2 during the Krebs cycle'??

I just did the 2010 Bio unit 3 VCAA exam and it states that during the Krebs cycle 'pyruvate is converted to CO2'. However, pyruvate is converted to acetyl CoA during pyruvate oxidation and then enters the Krebs cycle as acetyl CoA, does it not?  :o

Also, how would one describe the Electron Transport Chain in cellular respiration in A SENTENCE?

Why is RNA extracted in DNA chips?

Btw, anyone by any chance have the biozone answers?
Honestly I do them, but never have them corrected so what's the point of doing them?
Thanks :)

For the purpose of VCE, pyruvate decarboxylation is part of the Krebs cycle, so pyruvate is the input

Also, how would one describe the Electron Transport Chain in cellular respiration in A SENTENCE?

"Oxygen reacts with hydrogen ions and electrons (from NADH and FADH2), forming water. 32 ATP molecules are produced. Occurs in the mitochondrial cristae."

You don't need to discuss how a proton gradient is established or ATP synthase or any of that

can someone help me with this question please? i get what the question is saying, but i cant seem to work out which one is the right one. The answer is C.

The key sentence is "Neurons will only conduct an impulse if the level of activation is greater than the level of inhibition". The black arrows are inhibitory signals, so we want to choose the situation where the inhibitory signal has the least impact on the signal pathway.

An easy way of working out a solution is assigning a "+1" for secondary activation neurons being activated and "-1" for secondary inhibitory neurons being activated. Let's use this to work out the solution.

Option A: -1, +1, 0 = 0. We can see that the M and N neurons being activated causes the activation of an inhibitory neuron (so -1); O is activated and is an activation neuron, so +1; and because P is inhibitory while Q is activation, there is no activation or inhibition signal transmitted by their receiving activation neuron.

Option B: -1, -1, +1 = -1

Option C: 0, +1, 0 = +1

Option D: +1, -1, 0 = 0

So Option C is the only situation in which an activating signal is passed onto the muscle fibre, causing a contraction (and is therefore the correct answer).

Hope that helps, let me know if it doesn't make sense!

It varies based on individual needs and approaches to the exam, but when I did VCE biology my 'system' was to have a quick flick through the SA questions and then spend the remainder of reading time looking through the MCQs. It doesn't really matter so much what you do, since I suspect that reading time is given more to settle students than anything else!

Just repeats of a small sequence of code (2-5bp). So it may just be TATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATATA

So you've got lots of short repeats that are together in tandem. They're mainly in the non-coding regions of DNA. They're useful in pedigree analysis because they're easy to probe and the mutation rate is a little bit higher for these regions. Therefore, they're more polymorphic (more varied) than other sites of the genome.
