Title: How much harder is year 11 than year 10?
Post by: AdroitUsername on January 17, 2018, 11:37:52 am
In year 10, I was able to get straight A's in Advanced Mathematics (I usually got between 91 - 96 on my tests, but my lowest was an 84 on trig), English, Biology, and Physics. In year 11, I'm planning to take Maths Methods, Maths Specialist, Biology, Physics, and Stage 2 English. How much more difficult will my subjects be in year 11, and will I be able to do similar to how I did in year 10?

shouldn't be too much harder but will depend what difficulty tests your school sets the real jump is from year 11-12 not really in terms of content but in the fact that scores actually matter and generally most people care about scores then. (from VCE perspective HSC probs same tho idk)

If you are getting those kind of scores in year 10, then I gather you already have some pretty solid study habits and self-discipline. As long as you use what you have learnt during year 10, you will probably find that in year 11, most people feel compelled to work harder, given that their scores 'go towards something' or they have an atar goal they need to work towards. So yes, I believe if you keep up the same habits you have developed during year 10, and apply them (and new ones) during year 11, you will be able to do well.

This is just general advice/reassurance - not specific for each of your subjects  :)

Yeah, the real jump is 11-12. But I remember year 10 I was looking into everything year 11 and 12 and it was the best idea ever. I knew what subjects I could do and where everything could lead me and subjects scaling. I would advise to look into that, aswell. But yeah year 10 to year 11 is a big gap but definitely not anything to stress about, just try your hardest so then you get an idea about how you can perform for year 12.

Hey  :) ,

The best advice I wish I was given is to try stuff out! What I mean by this is that Year 11 is a "Dummy" year that doesn't count towards anything and is more or less a practise run at the HSC year. I'm not saying that you should completely not try, but in fact the opposite. Try these things;

1. Try and find a new version of studying and revising. Whether it works or not you will find out in exams but try and find a more efficient way of doing things.

2. Try using a Study Timetable. These are EXTREMELY CRUCIAL in year 12, so practising one (even if its for 2 weeks) will help you find out what works for you.

3. Learn what Scaling and other big words mean (Assessment mark, Examination mark, Examination Rank, ATAR, UMAT, LAT) and try and find out how these things impact you, again this saves time and effort in year 12.

4. Do heaps of networking. If you don't know what this means then don't worry, but essentially bring together some of your contacts and start organising relevant work experience or volunteering relevant to what career you are aspiring to achieve. e.g volunteer at hospitals and aged care villages if your passion is medicine or health related professions.

5. HAVE FUN!!! This goes without saying, but many people take Year 11 way to seriously and end up regretting heaps of things in year 12. Remember it doesn't matter what MARKS YOU GET, but HOW TO IMPORVE THEM!!! :)

Wow that was a trek of typing, but I hope its worth it! :) :D

Hi! Year 11 will raise the bar in terms of difficulty and the challenges you will face. However, it is the prelude to your HSC year so its purpose is mainly to prepare you for year 12. Therefore, year 11 is all about developing your study technique and what works best for you, how you should approach your subjects in terms of prioritising (what is your weakest subject and need to work on more?) and, in saying that, it's importance to maintain a balance in work dedication towards you subjects. All these techniques that you develop, you will bring into year 12! So good luck and have fun! OH, also don't worry if you haven't developed your techniques by the end of year 11, it's just important that you have used a range so you have an idea what may work for you.

Hope this helps in some way haha!  :)
