Title: RESULTS DAY (Mega Thread)
Post by: jamonwindeyer on December 14, 2016, 02:44:31 pm
If you want to get a prediction of your ATAR using our ATAR Calculator, click here.

This thread is going to act as a one stop shop for all sorts of advice about results, and a place for you guys to ask any questions you have about anything at all that isn’t answered below.

This is also the place to share how you went with us and with your peers. Think of it like a mini celebratory parade of results, just for us. Hell, even if you aren’t a forum member yet, register now and tell us how you went! If you’ve gotten a result you are happy about, tell the world and we’ll be sure to send a fist bump through the internet!

This is a supportive thread. I don’t have to tell you guys how stressful the HSC can be, and there will be all sorts of people here today. People stoked with their marks, whether they be Band 6’s or Band 3’s, and that is awesome. Let’s be happy that people achieved their goals and wanted to share that with us. Equally, there will be people disappointed in their marks, and we need to be supportive of them too.

I Don’t Get What’s in front of Me? Where did it come from?

If you want a bit of a behind the scenes look at where your marks came from, read our scaling guide. This guide goes through the process of attaining the marks that you received this morning. However you feel about them, it is nice to know where the heck they came from! If you have any questions about this process, let us know down below!

I’m Really Happy with my Results!

That is awesome. Take comfort in the fact that a random guy on the internet is seriously proud of you. Everyone here at ATAR Notes is seriously proud of you.

Don’t feel bad for being proud of what you’ve accomplished over the last two years of your life. It’s a big deal! And importantly, be proud no matter how big or how small your accomplishment was. If you got 1st in the state for English, go you! If you passed Mathematics when you were so sure you failed, go you just as much! Everyone has their own goals, and so if you’ve met them, don’t be ashamed to get excited!

Of course, make sure you are also really sensitive of the fact that not everyone will have achieved the goals they set themselves. For every person wanting to jump for joy, there is also someone who is probably really disappointed. And this can be the people we least expect.

So, look after your mates. You guys have all accomplished something incredible just by getting to the end of this massive stage of your life. Don’t be afraid to celebrate, and don’t be angry at people who do celebrate. Be supportive, and always keep looking upwards and forwards, never back and never down.

I’m Not So Happy with my Results…

If you are one of the people who aren’t so happy this morning, first of all, that is okay.

We all set goals for ourselves. You did it for your HSC, you do it in your job or in sports. If you go, you’ll do it at university too. And no matter how well you do, you’ll always measure your success against the goals you set for yourself. Even if you get a mark that most people would be happy with, if it’s not what you aimed for, then you have every right to be disappointed. Don’t ever let anybody make you feel ashamed of not being happy with your marks.

But just the same, this is just the start of your life. It’s disgustingly cliché, but: Your HSC Results don’t define you. The very fact that you are disappointed is evidence of the fact that you are clearly passionate about yourself, about your interests, and about your future. This, and all the other qualities that make you who you are, are what makes millionaires and will forge your future.

Trust me, any negative emotions you have now will fade fast. Plus, you might surprise yourself when your ATAR comes out tomorrow! Even if your results don’t quite meet your expectations, that doesn’t mean your ATAR won’t. Stay optimistic, you just never know!

Handling the Hecklers

Whether you are happy or not, you will definitely get people asking about how you went today. You might not want to tell them; and if you can avoid it, then don’t. Log out of Facebook, switch off your phone, delete your Tinder account.

Some people, you can’t avoid telling. This sucks; telling someone a result you aren’t happy with is not easy. But once it is done, it is done. Hopefully they support you, but if they don’t, then surround yourself with people who do. Today is not the day to be brought down or to bring someone else down, today is a day to be with the people who support you for the person you are.

ATAR is Coming Tomorrow

With your results now behind you, for better or worse, now we look towards the ATAR. The fact that there is a day difference between your marks and your ATAR sucks massively, but that’s a rant for another day. Any Victorians reading this, feel free to make fun of us below…

I once had a teacher tell me that you’d remember the day you get your ATAR for a while. Most stories I hear are of waking up early and waiting on the off chance it comes out slightly early (which it does sometimes). Mine’s a little different.

I remember, on the night before I received my ATAR, I set an alarm for something like 8 o’clock the next day. I’d not gotten a great sleep the night before, but I set the alarm and got to sleep. I probably should have known I’d sleep through that alarm.

My plan to get up and wait on my laptop for the release of my ATAR was replaced with a frantic phone call from my girlfriend wondering how I went. She had gotten hers and done really well, so I was congratulating her over the phone with one hand and trying to type in my ridiculous password with my right hand.

It seemed sort of anticlimactic really; no build up, no waiting. Just, “Oh shit, let’s log in and check that then.”

Just the same, try not to think too much about what is coming. I did, and it ended up being a waste because my ATAR snuck up on me. Try not to build expectations, try not to develop fears, and try not to set any plans or contingencies for how you think the day is going to go. No writing down the numbers of universities because you think you won’t get into your course. Just relax, enjoy a night celebrating the conclusion of your high school career, and maybe get to sleep earlier than I did if you want to get up on time.

Oh, and I could of course add all the “Your ATAR is just a number, it doesn’t matter in a year,” and that stuff is true. I vouch for it. But 90% of the people reading this are bloody sick of hearing that.

So Should I Predict my ATAR with my Results?

If you want to get a prediction of your ATAR using our ATAR Calculator, click here.

How accurate is the prediction? No ATAR Calculator is totally accurate, and you should always take the results with a grain of salt. That said, this one guesses mine within 0.1 of being correct. I’ve seen it guess 2015 graduates ATARs perfectly. It can definitely get your mind thinking in the right area.

Should you predict? Estimating your ATAR is kind of seen like part of the experience, part of the package.

However, if you don’t want to estimate, then don’t. A lot of people are better off not doing the estimate and just heading in blind. Don’t feel pressured to do it, just because you can.

If you have ANY questions at all about your results, PLEASE ask them below! Otherwise, sound off, how did you go? ;D

Remember guys. No matter what they are, you should still feel proud of your mark!

Those are what you received from one whole entire year's worth of efforts. If you cared enough, then no matter what the numbers are you definitely tried your absolute best. That is what matters.

Keep these numbers coming... I'm full on curious...

I filled in the boxes Jamon  ;)

Ancient History 91/100 (slightly disappointed with this just cos trials seemed way harder and I got 93 but can't complain too much hahaha)
Drama 91/100
Economics 81/100 (dunno how i managed that one lol)
English Advanced 93/100
History Extension 48/50
Modern History 96/100
Studies of Religion 47/50

Overall I'm really happy :) 96 for Modern was my goal since the beginning of the year so it's nice to know all the work for that paid off! English was way better than expected haha thanks Jamon, Elyse and brenden for reading all my essays and giving me so much feedback, I can guarantee that was a big factor in that mark :)

Good job everyone! The marks I've already seem from people are so good, proud to be part of the 2016 cohort :) Congrats, and good luck for tomorrow!!

Congrats to everyone above!! It sounds like you've all achieved some awesome personal goals, so proud of all of you!! ;D

Guys, my HSC marks are exactly the same as my assessment mark, does anyone know why?

Nothing to be concerned about, it's just how the moderation ended up, you got your own exam mark moderated to you for your assessment mark that's all! Pretty much all of mine were like that!

Hey everyone,

To be honest I'm actually really disappointed in my marks. To others they may seem good, but I had incredibly high expectations and I didn't reach them. This does however, reflect how I did s**t-all all year except for right before trials and right before the hsc.

English advanced - 91  (disappointed)
Mathematics - 97 (considering i thought i screwed up badly, i'm quite happy with this mark)
Legal Studies - 95
Economics - 96
Business Studies - 95 (really disappointed in this one, I thought I would do tremendously better than this)

Well done to everyone else!!! Hope you guys got what you wanted :)

Now the ATAR wait begins...

I understand that you feel disappointed, it really sucks when you build something up in your head and it doesn't come true (re. ancient for me haha) however honestly and truely, those are AMAZING results, especially if you really didn't try until trials like... wow. You should be really proud :) You do some really hard subjects and your scores are beyond incredible - especially in Economics!!! so jealous rn  ;) haha. Good luck for tomorrow, though I'm sure you won't need it :)

So ridiculously proud of everyone :).

Suddods you KILLED IT 😁😁😁, congratulations!

Isaac - fair enough man. While those results are objectively fantastic, everyone runs their own race. The two of you (directed towards suddods too) have made such a good contribution to this community so I do want to express my gratitude for that.

Isaac- you're entitled to your disappointment mate and we're here if you need us.

But otherwise. HSCYAMOTHERUCKINGLATER

Still hoping I can push a 93.5 but will probably be closer to 92.5 :(

That's correct, we get it tomorrow! :)

Mine were OK, I'm a little bit disappointed to be honest, especially with physics since I enjoyed it so much.

That's okay Beth, you are allowed to be disappointed, no matter how good your results might seem not meeting your goals is always tough. But you should still be proud! You've done so well, especially that one for Ancient! Far out!

If you've gotten some great results doing courses you love, even if you didn't quite meet your expectations in some ways, that still sounds like success to me. Your scores are just an enabler; it's what you learn along the way that's important, and from seeing you work so hard I know you've got drive that will take you far :)

Go into tomorrow optimistic! You just never know ;D

Hey guys you know the units that count for you, are they selected by the amount of marks you got or what they would 'scale' to? I got 85 in a relatively new language subject, but got 73 in physics and physics ended up counting.

Interesting question...Jamon would have to confirm here but I would have initially thought that it is based on raw marks. What is the new subject? It sounds intriguing :)

Tagging in! It's based on, after scaling, which subject will give you the best ATAR. Physics scales very very well in the mid range (which is where that mark sits), so that discrepancy makes sense. But they give you whatever will maximise your result, after scaling ;D

To add onto Jamon's explanation I have a tiny anecdote.

My physics teacher invited an ex-student back to our physics class. He now studies engineering at UTS I think.
He got somewhere around 85 in Music 2 and it didn't count. Got like 75 in physics and it counted.

Hope everyone's pleased with their results :D

Hey Isaac...

When I got my marks I was pretty happy, and that's mainly because I was completely euphoric about a few grades and kind of just ignored the not so good ones. When I got my ATAR I went into a little ditch in the world I didn't know existed. I realise now it's completely dramatic and crazy because I did so well, but in that moment so much built up and then it was turned into a 4 digit number and it was very underwhelming but also overwhelming. I cried for two hours and honestly thought "I can never face day again." My dad knocked on my door three times trying to help but for those hours I was completely inconsolable. The worst part is that I felt like I couldn't tell anyone because everyone would be stoked to have my marks. I understand disappointment, it's just about finding the successes now and celebrating them. I was definitely rooting for you to absolutely smash English Advanced, you showed enormous improvement and determination and you deserve the most wonderful of marks. 91 is absolutely no small achievement, I hope that with time you can feel the pride I have for you in yourself... Just know that whatever you feel right now is completely legitimate, even if you think it's potentially invalidated by people feeling a lot worse than you about grades that are a lot lower than yours. What you feel is real, and I'm happy to assure you that you should and will feel immensely proud, even if not right now :)

Just running my eye(s) over this thread, and far out: does ATAR Notes have the brightest and most dedicated community of HSC students in Australia? It certainly seems like it!

Not too happy with my results, at all, I got pretty average bands, therefore resulting in somewhat of an unsatisfactory ATAR. In fact, with the ATAR I've received and the fact that UTS doesn't offer bonus points for the Communications faculty, doesn't look like I'll be getting into my dream uni.  :(

However, I just wanted to say a big congrats to everyone, no matter how happy or satisfied you are with your results, we survived a gruelling year!

Don't be discouraged mfaith99! You may get in yet, and even if not, you can get there by pathways or even by transferring from another course or institution! You can always get where you need to go, as long as you are passionate :) congratulations on finishing a super stressful year!

I ended up with a 92.70, which is pretty much what I was expecting from yesterday. I'm a bit disappointed, my goal was really a 94, but I think there's still a few ways to go from here. I had a pretty rough period with my mental health in the middle of the year and I really want to just thank atarnotes (and all the wonderful users and moderators and admins) for helping me get back on my feet through both the community and academic help. This site definitely helped my marks but it also was a massive help in getting through the year at all and being able to pick myself up for the actual HSC exams. :)

Hey mfaith...I study Comms at the moment at UTS. The entry ATAR has been lowering each year. If you think that you might be just skimming it, then I think you should apply for Communications in a major that has a lower entry (I think creative writing has the lowest?) and then you can pick up whichever the major you wanted to be your stream elective, and then either pick it up as a double major or transfer into that as your single major later down the track.

Great job Beth! It's okay, there is nothing wrong with being a little disappointed. Stand tall, be proud, and take your avenues. Passionate people will always get where they need to go  8)

I am touched that you want to acknowledge us, so happy we could play even the smallest of roles :)

I know the disappointment, particularly when there is a number in mind that you'd like to reach. But you've definitely taken a health approach here by recognising that you struggled, and you overcame that, and that is incredibly important. That is definitely worth a celebration! Thank you for being a part of our community, you've brought such value to our little online world and you deserve to feel the pride that you will eventually feel when you recognise how huge it is to overcome mental health issues in a very, very pressing time. Pressure makes diamonds! It'll take time, but I think you're taking a wonderfully healthy approach and I can't wait to see where you go from here :)

PS. You know it, so I don't have to say it, but that ATAR is incredible! :)

Hey! Thanks for the advice, I have looked into this, with an ATAR (perhaps 2 or 3 points) lower than that entry ATAR still be accepted? I do know it depends on popularity of the course etc. But as I said i'm not sure whether I'll gain entry to the course.

I'm going to the Open Day tomorrow, so that may be able to clear things up, just clouded by disappointment atm.
Thanks again! :)

The open day will be very helpful. Last year they gave you the opportunity to book places to speak to someone one on one? If they do that again, I suggest you do that. For example, if you want to study Journalism as your major, you could enter Communications (Creative Writing), and then when you're actually at Uni you can do Journalism subjects just like someone who majors in Journalism. Then if you want it in your degree title later, you can transfer. For now, you want to focus on getting in the door. 2 or 3 ATAR points below entry may not hurt you at all, especially because the requirement for the double bachelor I entered dropped by about 10 points in two years. It's unpredictable, so get the opinion of UTS staff. :)

I got 97.60.

I kind of felt nothing when I saw it, which is weird since I never thought I was capable of any Band 6s let alone an ATAR of 90+.  I think it might be that I had this tiny goal of Combined Law at USYD in my head throughout the year which I had basically accepted that I would never reach, and this is just confirmation of that. Also maybe using ATAR calculators spoiled the excitement a little.

Buuut if I ignore that, I'm pretty happy otherwise. Thank you once again AN (Elyse, Jamon, Jake, the other mods and the students) for the help throughout the year.  :)

Well done Celeriac!! Fantastic news! ;D

Don't worry, I sort of felt that a little bit for my result. Like, I was super excited, but ATAR Calculators sort of primed me a bit, I almost wish I hadn't looked. But that's okay, not everyone jumps out of their chair for joy (I was barely awake when I read mine) ;)

If you want to study that course, then still go for it! You can always do internal transfer, if it's your passion and your goal, keep working to achieve it!

Congratulations once again! Super proud of you, and so happy we could help! ;D

Standard English: 91 (absolutely so shocked i thought paper 1 would screw me over big time! a personal goal to get a band 6 in standard which is very rare in my school but i didn't actually think it would happen!!! super stoked that 3 other girls in my cohort got a band 6 too)
Community and Family Studies: 90
Legal Studies: 89 (i thought i completely bombed in the essays for this exam ahh so happy and shocked)
Business Studies: 88 (tbh i was sort of hoping for a band 6 but not the end of the world, i can confidently say i couldn't of tried harder and if this is the result I'm happy!)
Economics: 83
Mathematics: 84 (so s h o o k!)

Atar: 92.3

did not expect to even enter the 90s for my star so extremely happy overall with my atar and hsc bands/marks

i just want to thank the atarnotes community!! it was so nice to know i could come here for assistance and advice and this assistance was so very helpful, it really made a difference in my hsc year and i am forever thankful :) :) :)

ended up with a bit below the calcs at 80.70. Pretty happy considering a was a band 3 student coming into year 11. Congrats to you's all  ;D

Just wondering, is there a chance i can still get into B/EngineeringB/Business at UTS? cutoff is 89.85 though i received 5 bonus points and an engineering questionnaire thing (http://www.uts.edu.au/future-students/engineering/essential-information/year-12-bonus-scheme-questionnaire).

The cut-off changes year to year, so with your bonus points and the questionnaire you absolutely never know! Keep it at the top of your preference list, see how you go!! ;D even if you don't quite make it you can always start in some other degree and transfer ;D

Hi it's been a looong time (I wanted to remove myself from anything hsc related after my final exam lol)

I received my results and what I got was beyond anything I could even dream of! I was hoping for 94 or maybe EVEN 95 ATAR and after my results I thought maybe I could even get a 96/97  but I got 98.30!!! I never ever thought I could achieve something like that so I'm really pleased!
I also got a call saying I received the women in engineering headstart scholarship too so this day has been surreal!

My results were:
English adv: 89
Mathematics: 96
Maths ext1: 94
Biology: 94
Chemistry: 90
Physics: 91

Thank you to everyone on ATAR notes who helped me out with my numerous questions! I really appreciate it :)

Woo AN has helped me so much throughout this year so I thought I'd share my results!! I'm so stoked about all of my subjects (especially extension 2 maths since I thought I stuffed that up pretty badly) but quite disappointed with physics D: Put the most effort into that subject but in the end the exam wasn't in my favour :/ Oh well! Overall I'm extremely happy and I owe you guys an innumerable amount of thank you's :D

English Adv: 89
Maths Ext 1: 96
Maths Ext 2: 93
Chemistry: 95
Biology: 94
Physics: 89

ATAR: 99.5 (omg was genuinely not expecting this!! Was expecting myself to get like 96 lol ahh)

Woo I'm so appreciative and glad to have been a part of this community :D You guys have been extremely supportive and helpful, thank you for all the time you've put in to help us :) love you guys

Well done to everyone, shows how all the hard work throughout the year pays off (and the help from atar notes of course)

I'm pretty pleased with my results as I was aiming for around an 86 to get into bachelor of business bachelor of science at UTS.
I got
Bio: 93
General maths: 90 (missed two pages in the middle of the exam due to them being stuck together and not going back through the exam because the last question stumped me)
Pdhpe: 90
Chem: 84
Standard English: 82
Atar: 91.45

My standard English results really dicked my atar but I put close to zero work into it throughout the year so probably deserved that. Im still happy though and have changed my first preference to bachelor of medical science bachelor of business at UTS. Thanks mods and everyone for the advice throughout the year

Thanks guys, you are all sooo supportive. After my results yesterday I cried a lot and ate a whole tub of ice cream in my disappointment.
But I opened my atar this morning and was super nervous and anxious and ended up getting 99.35!!! I cried again at this score but was super ecstatic about it, I didn't think I would get that especially since my atar aim and projection was 97. I got 99.5 in the atar calculator but I assumed it must be broken since it was so high.

Even so, I'm still a little disappointed in my English and Business marks and am annoyed at myself that I could've done better... but whatever, it's done at least!!

You were bound to get 99+ with those marks. Trust me, whilst calculators may overestimate they aren't that terribly off

(Of course you've already gotten your results, but that's basically what I would've said)

All I wanted during my HSC was to get a 90 ATAR and go to my local uni UNSW so I wouldn't have to travel far and thanks to atarnotes and my teachers I have well and truly surpassed that goal. Atarnotes helped to keep me motivated throughout my HSC as seeing all the hardworking and determined people on here inspired me to keep on. Got 4 top bands which is legit momentous for my disadvantaged+low scoring school (our highest atar in 2014 was 69... And we had one band 6 last year) I'm the first to bring home a 90+ for them in years and years!! Thanks AN <3 Guaranteed entry into Commerce for me now ;D

I've lurked ATARNotes for a while, and I've found the community to be pretty helpful on study tips and the like. Probably wouldn't have gotten these results without the hours of totally not procrastination spent on IRC.

English Adv: 87
Math Ext 1: 94
Math Ext 2: 90
Software Design: 95
IPT: 94

ATAR: 98.25

I need to thank you guys again...I got Band 6s for Bio and  English Adv which I NEVER expected, and the improved  English marks at least were definitely helped by all the essays I got marked and feedback I received on ATAR notes. Thanks for all your help this year! ATAR 94.20.
