If the question asks you to sketch the graph, without mentioning to plot the x and y intercepts, turning points etc, can you just not label those points and just draw the shape to an appropriate scale?

No, you should always label the most important bits (intercepts, asymptotes, etc) without them having to explicitly tell you :)
