UMEP Latin for next year - advice?

Hello all!

I'm currently in year 11 doing:

- VET Cert III in Chinese
- 3/4 History (Revolutions)
- 1/2 English
- 1/2 Literature
- 1/2 Maths Methods
- 1/2 Specialist Maths

I haven't got any SAC marks back for this year yet, but last year I had an average 95%+ in English, same with Chinese (although that's just an S/N subject), 70-80% in Maths and 80%+ in History. I'm hoping to keep up an average of 85-90% across the board this year, 90+ for English and Lit. I've been looking into doing a Higher Extension subject for next year and I'm particularly interested in Latin at Melbourne. Has anybody done this course who can give me advice?
I'm mostly worried about the workload for next year - how difficult would it be to manage Specialist, Methods, English, Literature and Latin? - as well as the fact that it would be a 5th or 6th subject - does that mean I would be better off dropping one of my subjects for next year in favour of Latin?
I'm purely speculating at this point and wanted to see what other people would suggest.

Thank you!

I've never heard of anyone doing UMEP Latin before but it sounds fun. Have you done VCE Latin before though?

No, I haven't. The Latin course is introductory-level with no prerequisites though, so I'd much rather do that than try and pick up 1/2 Latin at this point  ;D

Ah I see. It's a tough decision since Latin is a great subject and the background is very interesting, particularly for someone who is into history, yet it is also an exceptionally difficult subject (there is no secret why VCE Latin has insane scaling). You are also doing difficult subjects next year which require a lot of work so unless you drop one in favour of Latin I wouldn't recommend it, particularly since extension subjects can't be in your Top 4.

Edit: Actually since you are doing four subjects next year it would be manageable, but you would need to put in a lot of effort to learn a new language and the ATAR impact would be fairly minimal since it is just an increment.

I've had a couple of friends take Latin 1 and 2. Both have said that in the scheme of things it was fairly manageable. You might find the pace of uni a bit difficult to deal with to start off with, but Latin certainly isn't the most taxing subject there you could take :)
