Can someone tell me the most simplest answer that will owe me let's say 1 mark on what makes the genetic code universal?
the same four nitrogenous base pairs ? idk if you could mention structure/ having the same nucleotides, as it may vary [i think] - but generally the same four nitrogenous base pairs in DNA (A,T,C,G)

All organisms use the same nucleotide bases. HasibA is correct :)

On the same page, wouldn't they have to have the same nucleotides as well? I thought the bases were the only variable part (other than deoxyribose sugar vs ribose sugar).

They would indeed

1. What colour does chlorophyll absorb best?
The answer is red, but on the absorption spectrum graph of chlorophyll, it has the highest peak at blue?!
2. What is the average pH and temperature in a washing machine?
Sounds weird, but there was a question about optimum enzyme functions

1. It is blue, though you don't need to know
2. Don't need to know.

Hey guys,

What would be acceptable definitions for the following terms?

Cloning

Probe

Genetic screening

DNA profiling

Selective breeding

Gene pool

Thank you! :)

It was on the 2010 VCAA exam MC
So I'm assuming this isn't relevant to the course anymore?

Hey everyone
Just to clarify, during the exam we're allowed to write in dot point form for Section B, right?

pretty sure you dont need to know it. i see it as bit of common sense, and max itd be 1 mcq if it ever appeared (99% probs wont)

Hey HasibA and Calebark, on the 2015 examination reports it says"

"Universal
A common incorrect answer was ‘redundant’. Many students identified the code as universal and
then contradicted themselves by then adding ‘as the four bases are the same for all organisms’.

So this is what got me confused, do they mean that students said the four bases are the same for all organisms whilst writing that the genetic code is redundant or?

nah, i think they ment a couple of things:
1) redundant was an incorrect response.
2) the correct answer was universal- but then students said 'as all the bases are the same for all organisms'- which may be interpreted as having the same base- eg. Adenine base (A)- which is slightly ambiguous and i can see why that they took off a mark for that.
its only 1 mark- so just a straightforward answer should be fine- dont need to add more than necessary, esp. when examiners deduct marks off for adding in extra info thats incorrect.

Are you sure it was 2010? I can't find the question.

I could very well be wrong, so want to clarify :)

If any of you guys would be able to do any of these questions or answer them would be super great!
(For the multiple choice, can you please explain why each option is wrong like in a sentence or something?)

CHAPTER 11/12: (EXAM: 2)
MULTIPLE CHOICE:

Q30 (2013)
Q23 (2015)
(I KNOW HOW TO DO IT, JUST WANT TO KNOW IF THE SEQUENCE OF AMINO ACIDS TABLE REPRESENT MRNA CODONS OR TRNA ANTI-CODONS? BECAUSE THE AMINO ACID ‘ASN’ CODES FOR “AAC” (CODON), SO WHEN YOU CONVERT IT TO DNA IT BECOMES ‘TTG’ SO IF THE TABLE REPRESENTS MRNA CODONS, ALL WE DO IS SWITCH IT BACK TO DNA, BUT HOW ABOUT IF THE TABLE REPRESENTS TRNA ANTI-CODONS?? OR IS THIS NOT POSSIBLE? IS THE TABLE OF AMINO ACIDS IS ALWAYS REPRESENTED AS MRNA CODONS??
Q11 (2011)

SHORT–ANSWER:
Q5 d (ii) (2011)
Q4 (a) (2012) (CAN YOU PLEASE DRAW THIS FOR ME)
Q6 (c) (2015) (HOW IS THAT ANSWER POSSIBLE?)
Q8 a (i) (Which of the STOP or START codons do we include when counting? Because I know that we just have to count the exons in bold?)
Q8 (iii) (2015) (Does this mean "TAC" is not to be included when counting amino acid sequence as "AAT" is the 5th CODON instead of "AAA"?)

THANKS SOOO MUCH!! and super sorry if i'm bothering you
