When do you guys usually start and finish school? And how many hours per week do you need to go to lectures/pracs?
How long do you spend doing assignments? Is it possible to see your timetables...??????

Sorry for asking so many questions :c

Depends on the particular year and the subjects you're choosing.

First year I was doing about 22 hours a week. Lectures started at 8am.

Assignments aren't usually a huge part of biomed. THere are a few in third year, but yeah, not much. A lot of time is spent studying for exams though. You really have to do a lot outside of class.

By third year I was doing 9 hours a week in my first semester and I think about 13-14 in my second.

Biochem & Molecular Biol

To apply for MD course, is major an important factor?
I am interested in Pathology and Neuroscience, and if I end up choosing Melbourne, I think I would choose one of those as my major.
For MD entry, would you only need GAMSAT, prereq subjects and good WAM or would major actually affect your chance of getting in?

Weighted GPA instead of WAM. Your major has absolutely no bearing on whether or not you're likely to be accepted. In fact, at Monash, I believe you don't even choose a major. Someone doing Human Structure and Function has no inherent advantage over someone who does Health Informatics (lol), assuming all other factors are equal.

At Monash, first year there's 6 hours of each core unit (labs + tutes + lectures = 6h). When we start and finish usually varies as you get to choose your timetable. Somedays you may have uni, some days you may not. Some days may be stacked, some you may have a lecture and get to go home. With an elective (~6 hours depending on which elective), you'll end up with 24h overall. You don't have to attend lectures but it's definitely recommended. Labs I think are compulsory first year, but for some units in second year (BMS2011) they are just recommended. Can't access the timetables because new timetabling is up, sorry!

Assignments kinda depends on whether they are individual or group assignments. Individual assignments you can really push yourself to just get it done and so don't really take very long. Group assignments can be time-consuming depending on your group (sometimes randomly allocated, sometimes chosen).

I don't think major would affect chances? Pretty sure for graduate entry they look at GAMSAT and GPA for interviews. For the biomedical science pathway they'll look for AM and prereqs.

Hope this helps  :)

Yeah, as the others said, major has no bearing on your entry. The faculty is really keen to make this point too, because a lot of people choose human structure and function (i.e. anatomy) because they think it will both help them get in and also help them during med. There is some truth to the point that certain majors make the first year of MD easier than others; however, I think the usefulness of having some majors is probably overstated. Do what you want to study, and that will make it easiest for you imo :)

Hey guys does anyone have any information on the biomedical science pathway to med at monash. Such as marks required for an interview (monash website says 79 something), how many people are interviewed and what sort of marks actually got a place. Any anecdotal evidience would be great. I think 2017 was the first year of entry though.

Thanks

I don't really have anythign useful to add to this, but just want to say that the 2018ers got announced this week. If there's anyone lurking who got a place, please let us know so we can say congrats :D

Hey guys!

So I'm interested studying biomedicine ( monash) next year but I wish to pursue medicine in the future.

However, one thing that confuses me this year when I took the UMAT was that there were some candidates (that were already Biomedicine students ) taking the UMAT. I thought you should take the GAMSAT or etc, if you are already a biomed student wanting to pursue medicine. Or are they trying to obtain a high UMAT score and reapply for Medicine???
PS- I thought you are not supposed to do tertiary studies before if you want to apply for med in monash or am I mistaken?

Thanks soooooooooooo much
