VCESS 2017

Thought I'd start a thread for anyone at VCESS on AN to discuss.

Introduce yourself if you're taking part :D

I'll start!

I'm tutoring Biology 3/4 and am also co-head of the TSO team. If you haven't met us yet, shame on us—but basically we're here to help you if you're stuck with your classes and we're also certified recipients of awesome ideas (pls tell us if you have one, we love to share them!). Workshop wise, I'm hoping to run a workshop on Introduction to Spanish and also a workshop on Research Methods, which is new to the science courses this year.

This is my third VCESS.
I'm most excited to meet all of my new students and tutors, and see old ones who've come back. I'm particularly excited to see some of my old students, as I taught a year 11 class last year that was full of hilarious kids.
My biggest worry coming into VCESS is making my classes go well. Obviously all of the TSOs are really experienced tutors, but I know personally I still really worry that my class won't respond to my teaching. That can be really bruising initially, but I'm confident that I can respond to that quickly and change things up if it happens :)

Appears that the previous location wasn't letting people reply. I've tried moving the post so that you can actually talk on this! Let me know if it hasn't worked please :)

Excited to be a part of this! :) What are some ways people dissipate the initial awkwardness of no one knowing anyone else in their class? I don't want to jump right into teaching but aside from the standard icebreaker I've come up with nothing.

Also, I've got unmissable work which means I miss the second week of VCESS :( :( :( I've sent the Directors team an email but understandably they haven't replied yet. Does anyone know the usual procedure on tutor absences? So gutted about it zzz
Pls do not send me a pm about Aspire applications. The process has vastly changed since I applied.

The really important thing right off the bat is to be really enthusiastic and energetic yourself to start off with. The class will feel awkward, you'll feel awkward. It's very easy for that to continue if you don't try to break it off by setting the tone yourself.
The standard ice breakers are fine to be honest. People like talking about themselves. With my classes I usually give them an activity before they get introduced, just so they feel a bit more comfy in the class first.
