Exams in pencil

Alright so I'm told that we need to do end of year exams in black/blue pen for chem and physics as well as maths, purportedly also other subjects. I tend to use a mechanical pencil for all my work less English, but from experience, is there any real risk caused by using pencil? (i.e. assuming readability isn't an issue)

The exams are scanned and sent off to the examiners online for them to mark. If you write all your answers in pencil there's a chance that it might be too faint to read or that it could get smudged. I think you're better off just using a pen.

But if you're left handed, then pen actually smudges more  :-\

Hmm... I think I should be ok for clarity, but in the case its unclear they would have the paper copy retrieved?
Also pencil can be erased in the case you really mess something up (e.g. the entire calculation may be wrong), whereas in pen you're going to have to look somewhere else to do it again.
What would you say for a compromise between the clarity of pen and changeability of pencil?
@TheAspiringDoc LOL I'm a lefty ;)

I did some exams (that were to be scanned) in pencils, I got study scores, I got an ATAR, I got into uni, I'm alive. If you write firmly there's really no issue.

Replace your leads with 2B or 4B
Won't cost you more than 2-3 bucks and definitely worth the safety net
ATAR: 99.80
