These are some of the hardest things in Ext 2 mathematics. It's hard to provide tips (though when I start preparing notes I will try to cover as much as I can) however you really need to know what you're doing.

Some generic tips:

Purely algebraic
- Manipulate what you are smacked with
- The square of something is always positive or zero
- Inequations can be combined carefully
- Difference of two squares and sums/differences of two cubes can pop up anytime
- A few classic ones are rote (e.g. AM-GM inequality for two terms)
- Rare: Some sequences may telescope

Integrals
- You may need to consider relevant areas
- You may end up with a set of three equations, but sometimes you should work on two at a time whereas at other times you want to work on all three of them.

Ditto with Rui, especially with regard to considering proper areas with integral inequalities, keep this and other graphical methods in the back pocket  ;D

Note that this advice is for the Maths Extension 2 course, which doesn't have an equivalent in Victoria, but may overlap in places  ;D

Actually, based on your school you are a NSW student, remember to change your profile from Victorian to NSW!  ;D

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telescoping_series

From memory there was a limit question in the 2U paper that also asked about a telescoping sum. If I remember it looked something similar to this..

One of my questions on the Challenge Marathon thread for MX2 also features a telescoping product. May be of interest to you.

Hi RuiAce, could you confirm if the answer to the 2u question you posted just required rationalising the fraction and then cancelling adjacent terms?

Yes.

The ability to cancel out adjacent terms is what gives the name "telescoping sum".
