Does anyone have any tips on remembering how each type of fossil is formed? I'm usually pretty good at remembering this sort of stuff but I'm having difficulty with this one.
Hey Kira!
Sorry for such a late reply, I hope this is still of use to you
So when I went about studying this in class, I used to think of it as steps. Like a procedure. So, the organism falls onto the ground, and if the conditions are right (little disturbance, the organism has 'hard parts') then it will be covered in sediment. It decomposes, and leaves a hole in the rock where it once was. This is a
mold .Think of a playdough mold, that is, a plastic shape with little indents on the inside that you would use to create a shape. Then, if that mold happens to fill with minerals at a later date, it becomes a
cast.
Carbonisation is when the organism is squashed and leaves a carbon film
Petrification is when the whole organism is preserved. Think Jurassic Park.
Hope this helps
