This is a thread where people can post cool happenings in Physics, new discoveries they've seen in the news, or just general weird stuff.

Question: Is the speed of light in a vacuum a physical constant?

Well, yes, but no. Physicists have managed to slow down light in a vacuum in a few special circumstances, and here is one 8)

Even though this is somewhat older now, Gravitational Waves being discovery is something that was groundbreaking, confirming Einstein's Theories. Still cleaning up his work 100 years later. Here is a video if you want something a little more indepth and easy to understand regarding gravitational waves

A lot of things are becoming somewhat old. They're also making progress on type II superconductors. There's also images of black holes now.

Not really new ground breaking physics but...

Been studying statistical mechanics for a while and I am really awe-struck by the Canonical Ensemble, which expresses the ratio of probability between two states is given by:

From this simple relation, the fact the states with higher energy have much less probability of occurring can be used to prove all the important the results of thermodynamics, hence serving as the bridge between thermodynamics and kinetic theory. This makes statistical mechanics such an elegant theory 8)
