French as a major in arts or a diploma in languages?

I am looking to do arts/law, comm/law & diploma in languages at Monash Uni.
I'm looking to major in French & international relations in arts or so, not sure about commerce. I've just completed a year of commerce at Melb Uni, and I had the required ATAR for law this year (I graduated in 2015), and it's not definite whether I get a transfer yet (since my uni grades have more weighting) but I'm just looking at hypothetical scenarios.

Was wondering if anyone has had a good experience with doing a language as an arts major or as a diploma? I achieved a raw 39 in French last year, and I did French 6 at Melbourne Uni this year and I'm looking to do summer intensive programs in France if I do continue French. My only worry is, is that it will get pretty difficult, but I do genuinely love the language.

Also, what is the difference between doing it as an arts major and as a diploma?

When you're studying a language under a Diploma of Languages you're only completing units for that one language. When you do it as a major in an Arts degree you can either study other units in addition to that language or do a double major.

I believe doing a Dip.Lang adds HECS debt to your existing one from your other degree(s) and may also prolong your length of study, so that might be food for thought.
ATAR: 97.10
2013-2014: English Language | Chemistry | Biology | Methods | Specialist | Japanese SL
2015-2017: B. Biomedicine @ Melbourne University

Correct! It will add 8 subjects to your existing load. Usually consists of 6 language subjects, and 2 cultural subjects (for Japanese anyway).

Should be noted that you can cross credit some of these (i.e. they count towards both your Bachelor degree AND your DipLang) :)
