Yep, your ATAR lasts for 3 years (to the best of my knowledge), you could apply for a course this year and then defer it until 2018 if that is an option for the course and secure your spot.

But if you do not want to defer, then you can apply at the end of next year with your ATAR from this year.

Thanks mate, I don't really get what you mean by "if you don't want to defer"--  isn't that how you take a gap year, by deferring the offer you get?  ???

I'm fairly sure that you don't have to apply at all this year, and then take your year off.
Then when it comes to application time again next year, you could apply for the course. However, I would recommend deferring to get into the course that you want.
I suppose that you if you dont know what you want to study + want to go on a gap year, then you obvs don't have a course to defer etc.

This is a pretty common way to take a gap year.

It's also possible to accept no offer at all, then re-apply for entry in 2018 after your gap year - however, this comes without a 'guarantee', so you may as well accept a course and defer it.
